Nice little Vietnamese restaurant in South Slope has a relaxing, well decorated interior and a nice outdoor patio for when the weather holds up. Dinner started off on the wrong foot with a misfire shrimp summer roll. There wasn't enough mint and the peanut sauce was watered down and blah. The entrees, on the other hand, were outstanding. Grilled pork bun was outrageous. The pork was delicious, perfectly grilled and well seasoned. The curry chicken pho was also delicious, perfect amount of heat and very filling. Will certainly come back and recommend this place if you like Vietnamese cooking.
There's really not much to Ha Noi. If you have a craving for Vietnamese, it will have to do, I guess. I can't say it's worth going out of your way for. One downside of many Vietnamese restaurants in Brooklyn is that they're just not that aesthetically pleasing to sit inside; mostly hole-in-the-wall spots that are meant for take-out. Since this business has a decent interior, it 's one of few exceptions.
BUT…
The food wasn't that good. It was passable, but just passable. Summer rolls were alright; heavier on the rice than usual. The beef w/ lemongrass was utterly underwhelming; six quarter sized pieces of what I was told was beef in a mix of partially hard bell peppers, slathered in a zesty (but equally underwhelming, to fit the theme) sauce. My friend had pho which he said was just alright as well. They had srirachi on the table but no sate; you have to ask for it and then you get a third-full bottle.
Doesn't strike as the kind of spot worth returning to, unless you absolutely cant not have Vietnamese and refuse to travel elsewhere.
Edit : Just saw that they charged my credit card three times (by accident, I suppose). Not going to remove a star for this, as I'll be able to fix it quickly through the card vendor but seriously. Swipe once. Not rocket science.
So I'm at a bit of a loss on how to review Ha Noi because I honestly am not that familiar with Vietnamese food. I do know I like their banh mi sandwiches, not as much as Henry's but definitely at least on par with Hanco. One of these days I need to do a three way, side-by-side comparison to settle the banh mi debate once and for all. But I digress. The shrimp rolls at Ha Noi were fine, a little bland but far better then Hanco & Henry's but not even close to Bricolage's, which rock. I've had the pho twice (the meat combo special) and I enjoyed it. Could have more star anise in the broth, and I like more basil, lime and jalapeños but they will bring extra upon request. So that is the end of my ability to try anything else and render any kind of useful opinion on the quality of the food. A vegetarian noodle dish tasted fine but I don't know what it's supposed to taste like. All that being said, Ha Noi ranks 4 stars because the place is lovely and I have never experienced anything other then very pleasant service. Prices are reasonable for portion size.
So my wife works near this place and we went here for lunch:
The decor is really cute — it has this very warm, cozy feel to it and low ceilings, small tables and wooden dividers. We ordered the shrimp summer rolls which came out in a jiffy as well as the curry pho (it sounded interesting). The summer rolls were the standard, the peanut sauce was a little watery but otherwise pretty good!
The curry pho was pretty interesting; I wasn't expecting literally a bowl of curry with pho noodles inside. There is no broth to this, it almost was like ordering a Red Panang Curry at a Thai Restaurant with a side order of noodles. It wasn't bad but I don't think I would personally order it again.
Service was excellent.
I would say the only reason why I can't give 5 star is that the price when taking portion size into consideration is a little steep. I thought about ordering Banh Mi, but don't fix what's not broken and go to Hanco's for Banh Mi!
I eat here a few times, and tonight I ordered delivery at home. I always enjoy Hanoi food. Delicious, fresh and quality ingredients. I love their Beef Pho, and one of friends is really into their Vietnamese Steak.
Highly recommended, either delivered or there. The restaurant is not so big, but seat about 30 people in 2/4 tables.
Their beef stew soup noodle dish was crazy tasty!
The broth was thick/beefy/rich robust with favours.
Carrot was soft, and the raw onions added a crisp texture to the rich broth.
A min away from the train/sub, crazy not to try this dish if you like Vietnamese food – even if you don't live around the area.
I like this place. Though it was rather empty on a Sunday afternoon, it was quite the comfy spot. It's about two blocks from prospect park and it was a nice day when I visited so perhaps that may be the reason for it being all echo-ish inside. "Hello, hello, hello…)Moving along, the waiters and servers provided good service, and were very patient and friendly. The decor was a bit above okay and the food a little above average. They had these cool coconut drinks but I can only say that they looked cool because I didn't actually taste one and know nothing about their taste. Also, they have fried ice cream but I can only tell you they have it because I saw it on the menu and inquired about it. Nice spot though.
Looked really cute from the outside, came in here for lunch. It was really expensive in my opinion. I tried the pho with grilled chicken, it was really unimpressive and unauthentic. The soup tasted just a bit better than the stuff I get at Chinese take out. The decor is nice though….
