  1. In a search for sushi spots in the city of Newark, both Google and Yelp listed this place first. I checked out their website and was blown away by their low prices. It didn't seem right, but I still wanted to check them out. I go through Newark Penn Station all week, but I'm usually zipping through. Decided to stop in one day for take-out while waiting on a ride that I knew would be late. Who puts a hockey stadium in the middle of a crowded downtown? Anyway, I ordered nigiri (they just call it sushi out here) hamachi, hotate, amaebi, and a spicy tuna roll (they were out of uni, sadness). Everything was delicious! As for the price…not the deal I was expecting. While I'm used to most establishments pricing nigiri by the pair (without notation, just expected), this place prices per item. That $3 uni…nah, the price is comparable to the others, six bucks for the pair. Gotta drop a star for getting my hopes up (unless that's just how they do it on this coast) AND for only being open on weekdays.

  2. I've been going to Nagoyaka since it opened in 2007, so it's time to finally let YOU know about it.  So, first off this place is pretty convenient as it is located in Gateway-which is a 5 minute walk from where I work.

The sushi is ok, not great, but it's a lot better than some other places I've been.  I usually get one of the pre-made specials that they make in the morning, but after all this time they rarely surprise me with something new.  I'll usually get the three roll special (not huge rolls), which is filling enough and they are usually pretty tasty (though I have had a rogue scale in my spicy salmon like another Yelper).

The place is pretty tiny so eating in can be a bit of a hassle, but if you can get a seat the service is great.  I really LOVE the special rolls they make (in 2008 they actually had a McCain and an Obama roll), but they can be a bit pricey.  It's a fun menu and I am confident you'll like Nagoyaka if you give them a try.

  3. Good sushi, but small place.

  4. Probably the best sushi in Newark. I have been to this spot twice and have been more then satisfied on each occasion.

One of my favorite is the Elvis Presley Roll, however they have a wide variety and they are all pretty good.

Pricing is pretty moderate, so it's not the worse…

  5. Ventured over to this little place for lunch a few times since it's close to where I work.  It really isn't much to look at, and from my impression that is perfectly fine with them.  It's a no frills type of lunch joint.  Get it.  Get out.  That's exactly how they like it.  Works for me.

Went over again earlier today to pick up one of those sushi roll bentos that I've seen since I really wasn't in the mood for anything too sweet or greasy.  I'd have to say that their rolls are decently priced ($10~$11), and the bento box was stuffed pretty full.

Despite the fact that they're your usual Americanized California, spicy tuna rolls and such, the flavor is actually pretty good and the freshness appears to be solid.

Their teriyaki chicken box is also a decent lunch deal.  However, the box is extremely rice heavy and the sauce tends to be greasier and sweeter than I'd prefer.

Decent lunch option worth checking out.

  6. Not too shabby.  3 to 4, especially considering the limited options in the area.

I go here around once a week and they do a good job with fresh fish.  Prices aren't bad but I wouldn't say cheap either.

Solid food across the board, nothing that's blown me away but hasn't disappointed either.

A solid pick in the gateway!

  7. **3.5

I wasn't digging the nori (seaweed) here. It tasted a bit fishy and got unpleasant the more I ate. I do have to admit though, the lunch deals are very affordable. ~$10 can get you three hefty regular rolls which was more than enough to get me full. My favorite out of the bunch was the sweet potato tempura roll. Sounds funky, but its really good. Nagoyaka is a relatively good lunch option in the area.

The service is quick and friendly although I only saw about 10 or so seats inside. It looks like most of the patrons order to-go back to the surrounding offices. Within the hour I was there, everyone who got their order was happy so I assume they do a good job with their to-go service. I'd put this place in my lunch rotation if I was in the area, for sure.

  8. I was very excited when Nagoyaka opened in Gateway Center. At the time, there were not many options for sushi in Downtown Newark. Nowadays, there are more sushi places, but Nagoyaka still is a go-to spot because of its location, accessibility and convenience, and consistently delicious sushi and Japanese fare.

While there is a cute sushi bar and a table or two, there is not much in terms of seating for dine-in. However, it is very nice to eat there when it's not super busy (i.e. the lunch rush). Do the sushi bar if you can. It's a pretty popular lunch option for office workers in Gateway. Most people order to-go, or are ordering through the Hilton (Nagoyaka and Market Street Grill cater to hotel guests).

The sushi rolls are always on point and well made. There are some interesting rolls, too, like the Sunrise Soybean Sheet Roll. I've also had the salmon teriyaki and it was filling and satisfying. Price wise, it's a little expensive, but I wouldn't say it's a rip off.
