Sorry Murray's I ordered the same bagel and spread that I get at some other bagel places in NY and it's not that good. Honestly, the bagels here are smaller and not as tasty. Similarly, the bacon scallion spread I got, well NY is known for putting on a veritable slab of schmear on on a bagel; an amount so that half of it spills out and it still doesn't seem like anything happened, enough so that if you happened to have another bagel handy you could easily spread the remainder and it be sufficient. Murray's doesn't provide that or a particularly special bagel, it just seems like a plain bagel you could get at a bodega or even a cart.
Been to several bagel shops in the city now, so I know what to expect. Wraparound line, with choices of spreads on different flavored bagels. Do it fast and you probably should have cash on you.
Looking at the many options, decided on the Marble Rye bagel with Maple-Raisin-Walnut cream cheese ($4). They give a perfect smear on the bread, not too much to overpower and not too little to make it dry. Engulfed the thing in minutes – well balanced sandwich indeed. Wish I ordered a drink of my own, but I got a sip of the decent hot chocolate they make.
Luckily I came in when there was barely any line so the order took no time at all. I'd say this spot is in line with the other similar ones, just slightly less cream cheese/bagel selections.
I need to go back to have their bagels! So disclaimer: this post doesn't review their bagels
Pros:
– Came here Sunday midday – no line, amazing b/c I heard they can get really crowded
– The spice Chai latte was really yummy – price wasn't too bad for a small cup (~$4)
Cons:
– No bathrooms – might be difficult to carry out long conversations if you want to keep refilling your drinks
Grabbed a quick bagel to go here since I was in the area. Got a Marble Rye with Strawberry Cream Cheese. Quick, efficient and tasty. There was only one person in line in front of me so it was a short wait. I think you can try out various cream cheese samples.
The wheat bagel is great.
The maple raisin walnut cream cheese is sweet, really sweet.
The latte is large and glorious, just like the line.
I wish I'd have gotten a Sammy or just plain cream cheese so I could appreciate the glory of the bagel.
I went here on a Friday morning and encountered a little bit of a rush. That being said, the staff that was helping me was a bit lackadaisical as well, so that combination made for a 10+ minute excursion for a couple of bagels.
For my bagel, I went with an everything bagel toasted with plain cream cheese. While the bagel was decent, it was a bit stale/hard in my opinion. I have now had several different varieties of bagels in the city and I have to say, this was probably the least impressive one thus far. Maybe it was a fluke, but I have had much better in NYC.
I was curious what the fuss was about given the endless lines here all the time. Here is my advice- recommend to stick with the usual cream cheese, lox, white fish smear here. made the mistake of getting a breakfast sandwich.. I ordered breakfast sandwich bagel special with chicken sausage with egg/swiss and it was just ok. nothing to write home about. Their coffee was also just ok to below average- burnt with a bitter aftertaste- even the milk did not help. their bagels are good- chewy and tasty- but I should really rethink what I put on it next time.
I become more and more addictive to Bagels w/ creams!
Location: Murray's Bagel at Chelsea neighborhood is very old fashion. The counter may be little bit sketchy but the decoration is very old school. Some flyers are in front of door for neighbors to look at what kind of things they want.
There is not a long line here around 7:55 am. I was quickly walking towards to ordering area. The menu is very densed with words and it is hard to know what you want to order at first. And they do not have any marks in front of each cream cheese, making everything seem to be a guess after all. I was lucky enough to only crave for veggie cream cheese so I know what to order. I wonder if I do not know which i love best, i would be really taking some times on these unnamed cream cheese.
Food: Like I said, veggie cream cheese + pumpkinnickle bagel becomes my new vibe in the morning. Very good and not dry at all. I mean, both are not dry. And both are tasty after all.
I take a small seat, sitting there enjoying the food and watching people come and by. I felt immersive and I was them, the chelsea residents.
Service: nice.
Overall: I would come back and I donut know why Murray's only receives 3 .5 stars. They should be a star. I mean, one of the bagel stars.
