In theory, this is a great place for vegans! Everything is a go! However, the place is very small and the selection is much more limited than I expected. Really, it was so small that it was probably the size of the vegan food section at a sizable Whole Foods. The customer service was very bad – we were the only ones in the store but neither of the two employees working even greeted us or asked us if we needed help, and the other interaction we had with others in the store was with two girls sampling NotMilk non-dairy milk, and they gave us a sample as we were leaving which obviously was not effective. All in all, it was a disappointment.
Glad I got the chance to check out this cute vegan grocery store during my trip to New York last month. Haymaker's Corner Store is owned by the same people that own Champs Diner and is in the location of the old Champs. While I was there, I got a cold brew coffee to sip on while I shopped. It was pretty cool how they had a vegan deli case with prepared food and they also had baked goods from Champs. I was looking for stuff that I couldn't get from California and I found Yeah Dawgs (vegan hot dogs) in the freezer. I bought a pack of Yeah Dawgs to take home with me (stored them in my hotel freezer) and they were amazing! Loved that the ingredients were all natural too. We also chatted a bit with the woman behind the counter and she was nice and pleasant to talk to. When comparing this vegan store to other vegan stores I've been to, my only critique is for them to add clothing, accessories (such as purses) and jewelry. They also need to carry Miyoko's Kitchen cheese, my favorite artisan vegan cheese. I'm happy that another vegan shop opened up because I heard there are only like 8 other vegan grocery stores in the country.
I felt like a kid in a candy store when I arrived here! A definite treat for vegans and vegetarians alike. I can do some severe damage in this store!
Ever since I tried Yeah Dawgs at The Seed vegan expo last year I've been dying to find a store that sells them. They are in very few stores. Haymaker's is one of them. Since it's not relatively far from me, I decided to hop on the Q54 one Sunday morning and pay them a visit. I also knew this was the ONLY store in N.Y.C. that sells Follow Your Heart vegan eggs. Been dying to try them as well.
Upon entrance, I was slapped in the face with the immense heat that was blasting. It was one of the warmest weekends of the winter so that was strange. The store is fairly small, but they have an excellent array of all things vegan. I wasn't greeted upon entrance. No big deal but you wouldn't expect that from a small store that needs your business. I was the only one in there. If I remember correctly, the associate that was there that day was Shannon. Pretty pleasant. Not the in your face type. I immediately asked her if they had the Follow Your Heart vegan eggs and I was told they had unfortunately sold-out. They can't keep up with the high demand for them. She wasn't even sure when they would be getting more in. She was pretty honest with her opinions about how they tasted, the texture, etc. I appreciated that. I then asked if they had the Yeah Dawgs. She directed me to the freezers in the back. They sell them for $11.95 for a pack of 4. Yikes!! It's worth it though because they are the best vegan hot dogs ever! Heck, they are the best hot dogs, period! I love the variety they have here. They have make your own soy kits, a pet section with vegan and vegetarian treats, desserts, chocolates, pantry items, baked goods, dairy section, etc. They sell Brooklyn Whatever pickled items for $8.99 which is a little bit more expensive than elsewhere. The store is quite expensive. Unfortunately they have items no one else has so you have no choice but to break the bank here. It's really not too bad, though. I bought a bag of vegan dog treats that were made of three ingredients. Oats, kale and banana. It was only $5.99 so that wasn't bad. The BEST thing this store carries is something that they also make themselves. I didn't even know they had any until a customer came in for a coffee and asked for this specific type of milk. It looked really interesting so as I was waiting to check out, I ran to the refrigerator and picked up a bottle of Not Milk coffee flavored vegan milk. Bottled in such a cute, glass bottle. Decent size but it's not cheap. It's $10 a bottle but let me tell you, it is SO worth it! The best nut milk I've ever had. Simple ingredients(almonds, cashews, macadamias, walnuts, and dates,for a tiny bit of sweetness, and coffee), clean and fresh tasting. I'll definitely be back for more. They have a few different flavors of it. Plain, chocolate, coffee, etc.
In total, two packages of Yeah Dawgs, a bottle of Not Milk, Mr. Pugsly dog biscuits, Camberville dog treats, Lousiville Vegan burbon somked chipotle jerky and a jar of Shpickles string beans, set me back a total of $64.56!! Holy cow. Their products are really great so they're gonna have me as a customer for a while! BIg sucker that I am. 🙂
Pretty small store but they had a reasonable variety of things. All vegan which is nice! No need to scrutinize labels. A lot of "rare" items that you may only find online/ on amazon. They have a refrigerated & frozen section, ice cream, dried goods/ non perishables, candy and granola bars etc. There is a also a small section of vegan pastries from Brooklyn Whiskers. The prices are pretty reasonable for a small store.
If you are nearby that is great! But I don't know if I would travel all the way here if it is a commute for you just because it's pretty small.
But I definitely am grateful for this all-vegan grocery store existing! Lucky if you live in Brooklyn.
Being vegan, I was so excited to check out this grocery store, everything is vegan! I made the trek over after lunch at Smorgasburg. Upon arriving I was disappointed. A friend and I walked in together and were not greeted even though the store was extremely quiet and empty besides us. This lack of friendliness felt out of place and awkward in what seemed to be such a quaint and cute store. The amount of food was relatively sizeable but you would be much better off at Whole Foods or another local co op, what they carried was nothing special. They had a very tiny selection of produce in the center and a small case of prepared foods which looked pretty good. On our way out we had another interaction with a vegan milk company that was giving out samples. It felt strange that they only interacted with us on the way out, after we'd already decided not to purchase anything. Overall, I was disappointed with the selection of foods and the customer service here.
