Very good place to come eat in the UWS. The prices are reasonable and they have a very good lunch menu. I ordered the drunk man noodles with beef and it came with chicken dumplings all which was very good. I'll be coming back here next time in NYC and will recommended anyone to do so
A decent joint, with good service.
It is now a bit of a chain as there are so many locations. I used to enjoy the one on university so my fiancé and I have come to this one several times as it is near our church. I have to say their food just isn't on par and it is a bit diluted in flavor. Their Phad Thai is watery and their spring rolls were not packed. It just isn't great Thai food in general, but if you are hungry and you like a nice place with edible food, for not too many dollars, this place will do. Nothing was bad, but nothing was great. I have to say my favorite thing here is just their Tom yum soup. They layer the flavors properly and I found it satisfying.
All in all, this isn't a bad pick if you are just hungry and need a quick fix. The portions are generous and the food comes pretty fast. The people are nice and you always know what you're going to get.
Spice is a decent Thai restaurant. The food is always pretty good, but not worse nor better than the other Spice locations that I have been to. I took 2 stars off because the server kept saying WHAT? after everything my friends or I would say. So putting an order in was frustrating and took us about 10 minutes. Keep in mind, the place was empty and there wasn't any music playing, If the server is actually hard of hearing, then I am a bad person, but if the server just doesn't understand English, then don't make him a server. FFWD. Our appetizers came out after about 15 minutes. I liked the calamari. Spring rolls weren't my cup of tea. The shrimp over veggies was good, I asked to add onions to the shrimp over veggies since the veggies it comes with are just broccoli and Chinese broccoli, the server said extra $2 for onions. I asked for extra bean sprouts and the server said ok but not without a dirty look. The chicken pad thai was pretty good, as was the Pineapple fried rice, which magically came with a handsome amount of seafood. My friend ordered half a chicken and had no complaints.
Lunch special felt worth it. An order of an entree included a free appetizer. Pot sticker appetizer was not crunchy like I had expected but it was still tasty (why was the inside blackish?) and the seafood dumpling looked like a dim sum siu mai but tasty nonetheless. Entree tasted like expected. I got the Panang curry with chicken. If you're craving average Thai food this is the place to go
The food was good, but service was horrible. Also for being on the UWS and cute baby-haters – I give you, Spice, 2 stars and no more
Hypes:
– Lunch specials are great. They are reasonably priced from 9-11 dollars depending on the protein, and come with an appetizer. Portions are large and food is very flavorful. We had pineapple fried rice, vegetarian dumplings, tom yum soup (spicy but delicious), and spice basil.
– Typical thai food with nothing that really stands out as exceptional.
Gripes:
– If you're with kids, I'd say come here to just make the staff understand that this is the UWS, there are a lot of kids here, and for lunch, we can make as much noise as we want.
– We were initially seated in the back room, near the restrooms, and all the area smelled like was dirty bathroom. This was only because we had two 1 year old babies in strollers with us. Did I mention the whole outside main seating area was pretty much empty? Not cool.
– We moved ourselves to the main dining room, where we were not helped in moving furniture to position our strollers near is. We did that ourselves while they watched us. (THEY DONT HAVE HIGH CHAIRS)
– We were told a few times to keep our babies quiet, as they were too loud and the hostess couldn't hear herself on the phone. 1. our babies weren't crying they were laughing 2. she wasn't on the phone. We weren't even that loud – people could have conversations – I mean its NYC and dinnertimes get so loud with chatter that you can barely hear the person next to you.
If you want a stellar experience, leave the kids at home – but thats not happening here. Spice…watch out… I will be back for you, baby in tow.
Went for a group dinner and had a really nice experience. The drink menu is extensive, my sake caipirinha with mango was nice and refreshing, not to mention it was a huge glass. They offer the typical Thai foods that I crave (noodles and curry), along with some very decent meat, seafood, and vegetarian entrees. Spring roll app was pretty basic and pretty good. The pad thai was just the way I like it – a little saucy, balanced yet strong flavors, not overcooked, not that strange neon-pink color. Maybe one of my favorites I've ever had. The thai volcanic chicken was flavorful and juicy, not really spicy like the name would suggest. The crunchy pork belly entree was also delicious, almost reminds me of a chinese-style charsiu pork with much of the fat rendered out and an intense sweet/savory/smoky flavor – amazing combo with coconut rice. Dessert was also impressively good – the taro bread pudding was sooo satisfying. There was a little bit of a language barrier with the waiter, but service was overall very friendly and the manager was very accommodating with food allergies and requests. It was my friend's birthday and we picked up a bunch of donuts for her, they made an amazing donut-stack-cake for us.
The food is definitely on the better end of Thai restaurants in the same price range, everything is very affordable ($10-20 for an entree) and the portions are generous. Great place to drop by for a quick meal.
Run of the mill Thai food with generous portions, and good selection of vegan options. The ambiance is relaxing and the prices are reasonable, but for me the food was just okay.
I had the Spring Rolls as an appetizer-greasy and flavorless, however the sesame sauce that they came with was very tasty. My main course, the Pattaya Noodle, was incredibly oily, and had little flavor. It required a lot of hot sauce to be palatable. Sort of ironic for a restaurant called "Spice". The noodles and tofu were both slightly undercooked. My friends all ordered various vegan dishes and really enjoyed them, so perhaps I just ordered the wrong dish. I would be willing to give Spice another try, but it wouldn't be my first choice on this block.
Is there any way I can give this place 3.5 stars? If so I would do it. I come here a few times a year. Nice minimalistic decor. Service is friendly and quick, to the point that you might end up with an appetizer and a main course at the same time if you don't eat with decent speed. Food is pretty decent, especially when you look at the prices. When I compare Spice to Land however, I will pick Land over Spice, hands down.
Spice = Good enough to eat & cheap. That's the bottomline. : )
