Ploy Thai
“- Moo Krob Pad Gra Pao – (Stir-fried crispy pork with Basil and chili) – Very good.”
“In terms of food, we had papaya salad, spring rolls, pad see ew noodles and pad thai.”
“But the spice level complemented the best Som Tum (Papaya salad) I've had, in contrast to Ayada, Sripraphai and Center Point.”

A couple of weeks ago I got some takeaway here. It was late and my husband and myself were craving some Thai food. The restaurant was buzzing – and the waiters were super sweet (I would definitely sit down here and eat sometime). We got shrimp salad and the panang curry. The shrimp salad was really tasty *yummy* but the panang curry was just "okay" – kind of missed some "kick" and that "umph". Can't wait to try out some of the other dishes here though.
The new renovations are nice so i finally tried Ploy Thai. Before the renovations, Ploy Thai looked very much like a Chinese takeout place, After renovation, it finally looks like somewhere you want to stay and eat at.
I past by Ploy Thai and decided to order the Lard Nar for takeout. The Chinese Broccoli, or as I call it, Gai Lan, was brown which means it was way overcooked. It was actually quite disgusting. I never seen it brown before, usually it is bright green. Also, if you could see the portion of rice noodles they gave me, you would never believe how little there was. Mind you, broad rice noodles are mad cheap. It's just pasta. Did they run out of ingredients that day??!! It was the worst takeout I've had.
I am never coming back.
We came here for lunch and they had a lunch menu that costs $7-9 depending on the meat choice. For the two of us, we decided on getting two appetizers and a lunch entree. The fried egg roll was interesting. The dough on the outside did look like a web and was light and crispy. The chicken puffs were a little on the sweet side because there were sweet potato inside. The drunken noodle was the best and the spice level was perfect. If only the lunch portion was a little bigger. Cute joint for small parties.
Today is my 2nd time back after the renovation and i think they failed on service. The waiter did not write down my order and got everything wrong. Doesnt look like i will be going back here even if the food is good.
The first time I can to Ploy Thai, it was really good. The food was fresh and the flavors were quite fantastic. The service is a little lacking for a place so small, but they were great in providing good recommendations on the menu. We also stayed for an hour longer after we finished our meal and it wasn't an issue for them.
However, I came here on a weekday for lunch and it wasn't as good as the first time around. We ordered off the lunch menu and the food just wasn't as good as the main menu. The portions for the price also wasn't very good. Given the plethora of choices in the area, I'd probably stick to another joint like Chao Thai.
They were temporary closed for 3 whole weeks and now they have finally reopened … with a whole new modern look – I was super impressed!
Ploy Thai will now be back on rotation for dine in and not just for pickups.
* They now accept credit cards.
I enjoyed this place a lot. Came here upon a recommendation of my friend who is from Elmhurst. I'm a sucker for deliciously authentic Thai (and spicy Thai too!). I dined here with two girlfriends who don't do spicy, so I'll have to come back to try the spicy but we had:
-a Thai Iced tea (me) – standard, could have used more tea less condensed milk
-the stir fry pork belly with Chinese broccoli – well seared, perfectly cooked broccoli (Pad Prik something)
-Basil stir fried fish filet – lightly fried, yummy sauce.
-Both came with standard white rice
-We had this shrimp paste, seafood-y fried rice – delicious but personally really feel it needed to be spicy to have more flavor
-We had the chicken larb, which was delicious – lots of texture. Spot on authentic flavors but the larb wasn't as good as my local Thai spot – Larb Ubol
Service was standard; they made good recs and were honest about spice level. The place is also very clean which is a big plus.
I'd come back if in the area; it was about $20 pp – really reasonable for 3. The best Thai place though was Ayuda Thai (can't spell).
We went here after an eight hour period where I had not eaten, hydrated or peed so by the time I showed up, I was hangry and in mild renal failure. This may color my review a little bit because by the time I walked in, I was ready to eat cardboard but I think that even objectively, Ploy Thai is some of the best southern Thai food I've had in NYC.
FIRST, they have one of my favorite Thai dishes of all time, pork sautéed with chilies and deep fried thousand year egg. I've written about this dish before when I raved about it at S&I in Boston, but had yet to see it on a menu in NYC. This version is listed as chicken on the menu, but they will happily make the substitution if you ask. The result is fatty, spicy, funky and awesome spooned over some rice.
We also ordered the drunken noodles with vegetarian duck, my standard order at most Thai places. Ploy Thai's version does not disappoint. Underneath the sweet, salty, spicy lingers the elusive flavor of wok hay – that smoky, wok kissed char that so many noodles in this city are lacking. The vegetarian duck is flavorful and toothsome.
My only complaint is that perhaps the dishes were a little too salty. While good for spooning over rice, the level of salt both overshadowed more subtle flavors and did nothing good for my poor kidneys.
