I recently had my wedding cake and rehearsal dinner cake from Renato's. I had a good experience with my wedding cake (which is the one that matters most) and a
not-so-great experience with the cake I ordered for my rehearsal dinner. My wedding cake was beautiful – exactly what I wanted and it tasted delicious! I ordered a four tier, round cake, with an ivory exterior and white lace trimming. The interior was a red velvet cake with a French cream and chocolate moose filling – yum! I am very happy with how my wedding cake turned out.
The cake I ordered for my rehearsal dinner was good except it wasn't what I ordered. I confirmed several times on the phone exactly what we were ordering. I asked for a custom made cheesecake cake for 20 people and I instead got some kind of a chocolate cake. While the cake I tasted was good, I was disappointed I did not receive the cake I ordered and I was also disappointed in the response I received when I called the store to speak with someone about the mishap.
I'm giving 3 stars because my wedding cake was perfect. Although my other experience wasn't as great, I would order from here again and give Renato's another chance.
A good bakery in what I'm learning is a bakery Mecca of the northeast (here's to you Staten Island!).
The cases are well stocked with a variety of bakery treats. Butter cookies, cannoli shells waiting to be filled, assorted Danish and turnovers, as well as cakes and pies. This bakery also offered some refrigerated items that most bakeries don't supply, though they make complete sense. Tartufo, fruit shells filled with sorbet, and one other awesome looking item I forget the name of (it looked like a tower of cream puffs covered in a chocolate glaze).
I got a few cookies to take home. They were good, but not fabulous. I tried a jelly sandwich cookie (you know – butter cookies sandwiched together with the end dipped in chocolate and sprinkles). The weird thing to me was that it used apricot jelly. I love apricot jelly, but realized I've never had it used in this cookie before. My raspberry standard is just too engrained to be broken now. Sesame cookie was good for those who don't like very sweet things. 6 cookies came to $3.90 not terrible since I did get larger / heavier ones.
The cakes look phenomenal and I'd happily try them (and that tartufo!) one day. Service was prompt and friendly. I didn't get super jazzed about the cookie situation, which is the only thing holding back the next star.
It's Okay…
But that's all Renato's has going for them. Their pastries are sub-par, and the service was slightly stuck up.
You're not gonna experience the most delectable baked goods in the world here – just simply mediocre Italian pastries with above average pricing.
The only good about Renato's is the way it smells. Nothing is quite as welcoming as the smell of pastries baking away 🙂
