  1. The cupcakes may be expensive, but I come for real cake. Maybe best carrot cake ever and frosting good.

  2. After indulging in a slice of Billy's amazing Carrot Cake recently, I ordered a 6" Carrot Cake to celebrate a birthday for somebody at work.

The Carrot Cake was again amazing and deserving of equal praise I levied on my previous review of the individual slice (which I purchased at Billy Bakery's other location in downtown Manhattan).

I also got a complimentary Chocolate Chip cookie which wasn't too bad.

Note: If you plan to order a cake, you have to order 48 hours in advance, as per their website.

  3. There was a boy name Billy who is a baker and made good cupcakes in the Chelsea area of NY.  After dinner with a party of six we patronized his bakery and fulfilled our sweet tooth craving.  Unfortunately, unbeknownst to us it was pre-Independence Day 2016 weekend and his bakery decided to close shop early on a Saturday night without any written signage posted to the door.  Ergo, with a sweet craving we all were rushed to make a decision and make our purchases for a fast exit without critical thinking.  Service was cold but expected when you are eager to an early start for a long holiday weekend.  Our party of six was lucky to be the last patrons permitted to order as there were customers who arrived later and was denied entry with a cold "we're closed early for July 4th holiday."  Seating is minimal and there is no restroom.  It is designed for takeout.  Price is fairly moderate.  Billy's Bakery has the atmosphere appeal of a cold country bake shop set in a small town.  Business card is available near the cashier which goes into my shoe box.  I desired one cupcake- chocolate with vanilla $3.25 which was very rich and creamy making it very heavy and thick.  Immediately afterwards I highly required either water or liquid fluids to flush this heavy richness out.  I wished I had another saline injection like I did following my surgery.  However, it is fresh in the matters of taste.

Cupcakes on my mind motivates me to participate in a sweet crawl with this same party of six to hop from bakery to bakery or café to café in one day and Billy's Bakery is surely one included.

  4. I think that this was best carrot cake cupcake I've ever had. The cake was perfectly moist and nutty and the frosting was absolutely delicious. I'll be back for more.

  5. In the business of twee bakeries found in expensive neighborhoods, Billy's is probably best in its enclave.  I've been a repeat customer here for their chocolate peanut butter squares, which are dense, intensely sugary and contain a covering that is practically a candy chocolate bar with a slight touch of shiny greasy fat.  It's not for everyone.  It's for me, though.  The cookie/icing sandwiches are recommended as well.  They're made on good chocolate chip cookies and have their icing as filling.  My only other cookie experience with Billy's is their coconut cookie, which is average.  So glad to work so close to this place.

  6. I am new to Fairfield and see nothing special with this Bakery. Along with mediocre products the one and only time I was here the service was TERRIBLE. I came in and there was not a single customer in this establishment. It took the cashier 5 minutes to acknowledge I was in the building (I basically had to flag her down). I ordered a croissant and it was very meh. Nothing special and the pastries behind the counter did not look good. Literally….the muffins were overflowing from the tins etc. Will never be returning. Advice to management: hire people who actually like to work.

  7. Peanut butter bar. Vanilla ice box cup. Lemon w cream cheese cupcake. Snickerdoodle cookie.  My favorites.
    Espresso's nice too.

Peanut butter pie is too sugary sweet for my liking, as are some of their cupcakes.

A cheerful spot to duck into, nab a treat, and duck out.  Don't expect to stay unless it's late…there are two tables, and the clientele is rarely in a hurry to leave.

  8. Someone brought a whole Billy's carrot cake to a dim sum lunch celebrating a pastry chef friend who happens to be a carrot cake aficionado. The cake was slathered in white, no goofy frosting carrots adorning it. Its crumb was dark, uneven, spiced to high heaven, dotted with pecans and other chewy bits. The dim sum meal's numbing of my taste buds, my neurons screaming satiety, I somehow still registered that it was the best, most interesting carrot cake I'd ever had.

A year later, in the rosy-hued edges of my memory, I remembered THE CARROT CAKE. I marched to Billy's and bought the lo-fi version – a bunch of cupcakes:
    – carrot cake (of course)
    – peanut
    – banana
    – banana nutella
    – German chocolate cake*

At $3.25-3.50 each, the cupcakes were ALL very, very underwhelming. I've never been excited about cupcakes, but had hoped the banana and carrot cake ones would be fantastic. What god-fearing being among us could malign His Holy Creations, banana bread and carrot cake?!

But even the carrot cake cupcake had absolutely zero of the appeal I remembered, and the banana cupcake tasted old and dry. The best was the German chocolate cupcake, but even that offered no redemption.

I find it hard to accept that the cupcakes were so much crappier than that first, transcendental BILLY'S CARROT CAKE experience. But maybe it was the dim sum insulin spike at the time talking.

*That's what we ended up with. I found out upon opening the box at home that the guy at the counter (who seemed like he despised his job) had missed a couple of the other flavors I had asked for. At least I wasn't charged for them, I guess.
