HORRIBLE service. Will never return.
I came here when I was sick because I had to meet a friend for dinner and I assumed an italian restaraunt would have soup, and my friend wanted salad. There is legitimately ONE soup option on the ENTIRE menu which is their soup du jour. That day, it was something with lentils. I had an extremely sore throat, and when the waiter came around I was speaking softly. He was very rude about this and kept yelling "WHAT! WHAT ARE YOU SAYING!" so finally my friend had to explain that I was sick and order for me. What a friggin disaster.
The soup was very mediocre. Way too much salt and a very small portion for paying 6$. Friend got the caprese salad which came with NO basil! It was a bowl of tomatoes and mozzerella balls. Cost 8$. You could buy the exact same salad from a deli for 1/8 of the price.
For a location as hot as midtown east, you should step up your game in pretty much every way possible. The only good thing about the meal was that the bread basket came with a few pieces of salami and i absolutely love sliced meat. The restaraunt was completely empty when we walked in which shouldve been a sign.
I've passed this place a hundred times without thinking to go in but tried it out with a friend a few nights ago and had a wonderful experience. I've heard that La Stanza is House of Lasagna's slightly more upscale sister restaurant, with House of Lasagna occupying the first floor and La Stanza the second. Not sure if that's true because both looked to be about the same in terms of atmosphere.
We ordered off the prix fixe menu because it was a phenomenal deal. Where else can you get three courses in Manhattan for $19?! They also didn't skimp on portion size either. Each dish was perfectly sized so that I left feeling satisfied rather than stuffed, which can sometimes be the case at Italian restaurants. We both started with the mixed green salad, which was what you'd expect: mixed greens, a few carrots, and balsamic. I ordered the seared salmon and my friend ordered the chicken parmigiana. The salmon was cooked perfectly and came with wilted garlic brocollini on the side. It was a great healthier alternative if you're not looking to indulge in a pasta dish. For dessert, we ordered the bread pudding and tiramisu. I'm not a tiramusu fan so I can't comment on that, but the bread pudding was yummy! It was a bit custard-y, but I prefer that to it being dry. It came with a tiny little scoop of vanilla ice cream which was a nice touch. I'm being picky here, but the ice cream had that frozen-for-too-long taste. A higher quality ice cream would have been nice, but again, I'm just nit-picking.
Our server gave us just enough space and seemed to know exactly when to come over to take our order and check on things. He quickly filled our drinks and was helpful in describing different items on the menu.
Similar to other reviewers experience, we had a great time. For a three course prix fixe meal this place is unbeatable. The food is revolutionary or groundbreaking and the atmosphere isn't especially amazing, but for quality, tasty food, friendly service, and an amazing price, this is definitely a great spot to keep in mind. I'll definitely be coming back here and bringing friends!
7 pm here on a Friday night and the only guest. I don't know much how this place can stay in business when one of the busiest night of the week and they have no one. The two servers seem quite nice. It's a cute location. Tiny but a nice atmosphere.
Finally at 8 there were five other people.
The spinach lasagne was delicious!! It was a nice portion. Creamy and I'm stuffed when I couldn't finish it. The salad that came out first had way too much dressing. But it was tasty. Small wine list but this is a small place. I didn't like that hey didn't have more options available for a glass.
Overall I'd come here again if I thought this place had more of a chance of staying open.
