A great neighborhood restaurant, I've been to Tom Yum Koong many times and have always enjoyed it. I've tried lots of the appetizers including the satay chicken, curry puffs & spring rolls, and I would recommend all 3! The pad thai is delicious as well as the pad see ew, the pineapple fried rice and the pad eggplant. I can't wait to go back and try more of the menu. The staff is always welcoming. The restaurant is small inside, so I would suggest calling ahead to make a reservation if you have a large party.
Tried this place earlier this evening. The food was good. Service was friendly, however, my friend's order was incorrect, even after the server clarified what she asked for. I'd come back here.
Really, 3.5 stars. I'm on a quest to find "my" Thai place in Bergen County and was disappointed to find that this wasn't it. I've only tried the takeout, but the restaurant itself is small and cute.
First off, the clear soup is awesome – flavorful, perfect tofu texture. The massaman curry was good not great. And while the noodles in the pad see ew were nice and soft, the flavor was bland and the chicken was dry. Also, there was this strange grittiness to it, something unidentifiable that looked the dirt (Yum!). Definitely not a repeat dish.
We were quite pleased with our experience at Tom Yum Koong – I'm surprised by the poor reviews.
Beef satay appetizer was really good. The bf found the beef too tough, but I thought it was terrific. Good dipping sauces, and the portion size was just right for the price. It was a great start to the meal.
My pad see ew was pretty good – nothing exceptional, but I enjoyed it. He almost licked the bowl of his mixed seafood pineapple paradise curry dish (I can't recall the exact name).
Service was excellent – friendly, polite, efficient, accurate. The place was beautiful – simple, classy, comfortable. I was a bit shocked by the fact that there were so few tables filled on a Saturday night – hope they stay in business!
Dinner for 2 with tip was around $50. BYOB.
I really wanted to like this place. The reviews are great… but my green curry was not made with skill. The coconut milk had curdled…the chicken was the only thing I could eat in this… so I ate all my chicken and left the curry. I didn't feel like making a big deal because I had already waited long enough for my food, my husband who got a noodle dish had got his food before me…and since it was hot I told him to go ahead and start without me…. I would have probably just took my curry to go if I had asked to remake it….it is BYOB so I may come back to get their noodle dishes… but I wouldn't recommend and curry dishes
I was surprised with how good this place was. The atmosphere was really nice and relaxing. We got the chicken potstickers and they were fantastic. The beef satay was very good too. The tom yum koong soup was tasty but ridiculously hot when we got it and by the time it cooled down our meal was there so we couldn't really enjoy it. I got the drunken noodles and it was awesome. I would definitely go back.
Decided to eat in about two weeks ago and was glad we did.
I ordered the tom yum soup. Um yum and so much. Amazing spice and deliciousness
I had the fried tofu. Just perfect amount of fried and not greasy at all.
Ordered a side of steamed vegetable to counterbalance the fried. I love my veggies steamed where they are still crisp.
Not the greatest Thai food I have around here, but not bad either. Not as greasy as some Thai places I've been to, but spiciness is still not quite there (despite your request of make-it-spicy). Relaxing and cozy atmosphere, quick service, BYOB, and even when you BYOB order some Thai Tea too! 😉
Weeknights dinner are typically quiet, but parking around here is tough!
That's why this is definitely not my go-to Thai place in Bergen county.
