Northern Thai in NJ?! in Montclair?! The food Gods have answered another one of my prayers!
My fiancé and I visited SLA Thai for the first time last week for dinner, and to be honest, what instantly attracted me to SLA at first was their interior design. I found them on Yelp and then searched for a respective Instagram account. (All the cool trendy places to visit have an account, no?) Low and behold, SLA was marketed hip, cute, fresh, with all the trendy whistles, but you know what? It delivered so much more. The service was excellent. The food was outstanding!!!! Best authentic Thai around!!! Duck Breast Red Curry with fresh lychee and pineapple?!? You can't get that at your average Thai spot. I knew we were in for a treat the second our plumpy chicken wings and papaya salad were dropped onto the table as appetizers. Their papaya salad was fresh to death! The light but well balanced fish sauce vinaigrette, invigorated my Filipino blood. And marinate for the wings was finger licking good, literally!
The Duck Breast was my Fiancé's main dish. I ended up getting the Pork Belly Curry. SLA did not hold back. The pork belly chunks were so flavorful and so tender! It came with little pinch of pickled veggies, which they could have been a little more generous about (pork belly is so rich!) I ate my entire serving, which made me slip into a food coma faster than I had imagined. If that wasn't enough, we ordered the Kanom Tuay, the coconut custard dessert. It was oddly not as sweet as I imagined, but it had a fun texture. I'm not sure I would order it again (everything deserves a shot), but there's always sticky rice and mango to try next!
Yea, I can concur that it's not the cheapest Thai restaurant around (one or two dollars than your average), but I'll pay for quality any day! SLA is a must for anyone in the area!!!
Loved the Pad Ka Pow dish and tasted the Duck Curry special which was also supper tasty. However I didn't love the Tom Yum soup. The atmosphere is very rustic cafe and doesn't have that old school Thai feel. Overall I enjoyed myself and I would go back.
Charming and a touch eclectic. Have been interested in dining here, especially after reading many fine Yelp reviews. Called in for take-out lunch as a start. Their lunch menu has some set order options, and I chose SLA "set A" with sticky rice, spicy wings, and the amazing papaya salad others have mentioned–with little dried shrimp. All tasty. I thought with only 5 spicy wings and $15 price tag a little over priced, but quite tasty. If they put in one more wing, that would be better. Packaged beautifully to go. But seeing the inside of this eatery makes me really want to return with friends–relaxed yet contemporary design. Another nice addition to Upper Montclair ethnic food scene.
Thanks SLA Thai for consistently serving great food. From our very first visit on opening day, our meals have always been delicious and packed with flavor. Worth every penny!
