  1. I was in the Astoria area again for work and was in the mood for some pastries.

Just like last time, upon walking in both your sense of sight and smell are assaulted with delectable looking and buttery smelling bakery items.

I decided on three items: The 7-layer cake, Berry Napoleon, and a Kitchen Sink Cookie.

7-layer cake was ever so delicate and literally tumbled over when I took off the clear plastic sheet that held the cake slice in place. This also translated to the taste of the cake as it was very light with supremely moist sponge cake layers and smooth chocolate mousse between each layer (except the top layer which I think was a strawberry frosting).

    Really excellent cake.

The berry Napoleon I purchased for my sister (as I don't like Napoleon's), and after taking a bite she proclaimed it one of the best versions she has ever eaten!

I sampled a very small portion of the Napoleon cream and it had a pleasantly sweet vanilla custard flavor and overall very luxurious tasting. All the berries were fresh as was the pastry shell which was still flaky even after a couple of hours in the refrigerator.

The "Kitchen Sink" cookie was very good. Living up to it's name, I could both see and taste milk chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, coconut, sugar-cookie elements, oatmeal, and raisins. None of these ingredient combinations detracted from the cookie and everything just seemed to work.

If you like your sweets…you have to make your way to visit Martha's Country Bakery!

  2. I love the original Martha's in Forest Hills and gave it the five stars that it was due, but, while all the baked goods still look really tasty, the waitress we had was just kind of rude and nothing at all like the bright, happy people working in the other Martha's. Maybe she had a problem with just me. Well, like they said, unless you're Nutella.

She never came over to check how everything was. Also stood right by the door as we were leaving and stared right through me without wishing a good night. Just seemed stiff, bored, and over it. I understand that a smile is sometimes too much to hope for, and everyone has crappy days but I wished we had the waitress who had the table next to us, who came by often with more napkins and volunteered to box up the leftovers.

The next time I want to get my sugar fix, I'll wait in line with all the rest for the Martha's in Forest Hills. I don't mind paying a little extra for some quality sugar, but I'm not sure I want to come back when the service wasn't the friendliest and it took a 30min+ train ride to get here.

  3. Nice place? Yes.
    Lots of choices? Totally.
    Popular? Most definitely.
    Over-priced? Holy crap yes.
Delicious? Depends what you get and how long it's been sitting out.
Should you try somewhere else? Probably, this place gets enough business. Give another small biz your $$$.

  4. Martha's is open almost around the clock. They're open 6 am to midnight from Sunday through Thursday and they're open from 6 am to 1 am on Fridays and Saturdays. That means fresh cake at almost any time of day!

I like how the bakery also has a cafe  which makes it a convenient late night stop after dinner or drinks on Ditmars Blvd in Astoria. The cakes are delicious! They're rich and well balanced; tasteful yet not overly sweet. The service is quite speedy despite having both the cafe and the bakery.

  5. My main problem with a lot of bakeries is that they sacrifice rich flavors for "subtleties." I cannot begin to tell you how many times I've made the deer-pulling-off-hooves-to-reveal-fingers-gif reaction to a big box of italian bakery cookies only to have one and be disappointed. Where's the sugar??? Cakes are often the same. Who wants a boring, taste-less whipped-cream frosting? Give us the super sweet frosting that tastes like the canned stuff on crack!
Martha's delivered. I had a slice of their cheese cake, and they are not messing around. Full flavor, lots of sugar, just what the doctor warned me against ordering.
I know all this new-wavey internet slang is kind of ridiculous on a review for… Marthas Country Bakery… But they are the real deal.
In a word: Awesome. In two: It'z bangin'
MCB ain't nottin' to- I'll stop.

  6. Stopped by this awesome place for a dessert, and really enjoyed the atmosphere and a selection of desserts they offer.

Red Velvet Cake and Strawberry Shortcake were both very delicious and their regular black iced coffee was also good. A black iced coffee is just a coffee, nothing special as you would expect but it paired pretty good with sweet and delicate desserts. It's kind of like how a slice of ginger works when you are having a sashimi or nigiri, it cleans your palette so you can enjoy the same flavor on your next bite, over and over.

I wish there are more places like this in New Jersey but that doesn't seem to be the case. At least near where I live! I and a friend were seated for a long time almost till the closing time and they had asked us to move over a few tables to accommodate a large group of people coming in and we moved over without any issues.

They were very polite about it and gave two of us some freshly baked stuff! Yes we can move over tables all the time?! Hahah good stuff. The desserts were really delicious and they had tons of variety. Would love to go back when I get a chance.

  7. This place was already getting bonus points for being open late after a night of drinking and eating around the area. After a night out in Astoria, chances are your mouth still wants to eat here while your stomach does not.

The assortment of desserts still available just before closing was great. I can only imagine what it looks like before they run out of choices.

Very berry napoleons were great. Flakier, creamier and berry-er than what it looked like through the glass window. Buttercream cake was smooooooth.. well.. like butter.

Seating is ample, but it can still fill quickly even though the stays are presumably short for just dessert. Simple linear arrangement where the desserts are the centerpiece, but that also means you'll be staring at more sugar if you choose to sit inside. Beware.

This place will no longer be an ending to a night out in Astoria but the destination itself.

  8. This review is purely for their cheesecake. After reading on a blog that Martha's had some stellar cheesecake, my husband and I decided to give it a try. So glad we did! Rich and creamy and full of flavor! Really great cheesecake! We tried the plain cheesecake and the brownie cheesecake. The plain was incredible. It showed they really knew how to make cheesecake. The brownie was delicious with a rich a fudgey bottom. This bakery also had an incredibly huge variety of other delicious looking treats. They also make all kinds of coffee and have seating if you're looking to eat in.
