Fay Da Bakery
“I go to a few different bakeries in Chinatown that are great, but I have to commend Fay Da for its INCREDIBLE sponge cake ($0.95/each).”
“In today's ailing economy for $5.00 patrons can still get two buns and one bubble tea as a complete meal.”
“I recommend getting the egg tart, corn and ham bun, shredded pork bun, hot dog bun, and the egg and ham bun.”

Nice array of Chinese pastries, breads, and desserts. I especially like the egg tarts and the pork buns. The place tends to have long lines, but they move fairly quickly. Oh, and if you hold up the line for any reason, even accidentally, the workers will pound their fists impatiently on the counter and yell at you.
Whatever exotic ingredients you want to stuff in a baked milk or steamed rice bun of one kind or another, Fay Da does it — from taro to 1000 year old eggs, to hot dogs, to ham and eggs, and roast pork and cabbage, tuna, red bean paste and oodles of other stuff.
Waste not, want not.
I can't say all their savory combinations work for me, but you can sure have a hearty breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert here if you wish — for cheap — and it will take you a while to eat your way through the dozens of offerings.
Most of the buns are between $1 – $2 bucks and very filling. Cash only.
The pastry selection is equally enormous. I'm not big for sweets, but I did enjoy the custard cup (sorta like a Portuguese pastel de nata), but the coconut cream bun was less to my liking — kind of like eating creamed sweet butter on coconut wonder bread.
This is a self serve and mostly take out establishment — with little indoor seating so plan ahead. I consider it a form of street food vending whose wares are best consumed while sitting on a nearby stoop, sauntering about in the neighborhood or hanging on a park bench.
Quintessentially Chinatown.
This place is just OK. There is limited seating. The menu is also pretty limited, although they do have a little Asian pastry shop in the back. The sesame ball was pretty greasy and fantastic, but the other pastry was a bit dry.
I also got hot bubble tea. For the size of the tea, it was not super cheap. It was basically in a coffee cup with Liptons tea bags hanging out the side. Kind of took the mystere of bubble tea away! To give them credit, the tea was good, not overly sweetened or creamy.
Just know that the grass jelly you can only have with the cold items. There was the red bean ice that looked really good, but didn't get to try!
I think a this bakery provides customers with pretty decent and fresh bread, pastries and drinks. I've been here twice and it was ok.
Just not into being rushed out, because they're about to close. CUSTOMER FIRST. If we need another 5 min to decide what bread we want, YOU WAIT… and then you eventually close. NO RUSHING!!!!!
Besides I'm not into CASH ONLY. Come on it's 2016!
Fay Da seems to be the chain of Chinese bakeries in town! I popped into this branch to get myself a crispy top bun (soft bun with a sweet crispy top) and my sister a wife cake (flaky pastry filled with dense melon filling). The place was packed and seemed to be very popular with the local Chinese community. There was limited seating and they were all taken up by people enjoying coffee and cakes. There was a long queue to get to the bakery section and to pay but the ladies behind the counter were swift. For my two buns, I only paid $2.30! Bargain!
This bakery is ok. I came a few days ago and noticed how the prices have gone up. Gone are the days of buns and tarts being $1 or less. Rising costs have gotten to everyone including Chinatown, boo.
I was shocked to see egg tarts are now over $1. Everyone else too, not just Fay Da.
The cost of eating and living is rising, just not our salaries. Sorry for my rant.
The bakery items are okay at Fay Da. Is it my favorite? No. Is it the worse, no. It's pretty standard, average. Chinese bakery items in all the Chinese bakeries have not been too innovative for years. That's my biggest complaint about Chinese bakeries.
Some of the bakery items in Fay Da skimp on the fillings. This is not the place to get the best roast pork buns either. The egg tarts are okay. The Kaya bun was dry. It was not chewy nor moist. Not my favorite bakery.
It's the bakery from my childhood, and it looks like they've had the same furniture and displays since then. I like that they don't even care that things are broken and just tape everything up. I like how dim the lights are and how dingy it is. But hey, they do good buns and pastries. As long as you don't care about decor and pushy old Chinese ladies on line, you'll be fine.
Tight seating but forgiven for the numerous times you have served me my needed coffee and cakes, buns and treats. I think for the general and most parts, their baked/steamed treats are a bit above standard. The coffee is very good. With the very good coffee I always get a piece of cake. Today I had one of their chocolate cakes and it was soft and stable. It had a nice chocolate flavor and chocolaty cream.
Those hostesses can speak both Chinese and a bit of English and understand my Chinglish.
The price of coffee has gone up by a quarter each year lately but I think that's okay, gotta keep up with the economy while serving a constant well made baked/steamed goods.
