I can't believe this place averaged 3.5 stars. I would give it none if I could. My boyfriend & I went here once on the recommendation of some crazy lady we met at Starbucks (this should have been our first clue as to what we were in for).
The place is small and easy to miss if you're driving by. It's also down at the not so nice end of Bloomfield Ave. As a girl, I would never walk that area alone- day or night.
It's BYO which is good- you're going to need to drink A LOT to make the food here taste somewhat edible.
I was here several months ago so I forget exactly what I ordered but it was a dish with noodles and beef. When my dish arrived, it smelled like a barn. I am not exaggerating. I took one bite hoping the taste would supersede the smell but nay. It was making me sick to my stomach. I asked for a replacement veggie dish but by the time it came I was so disgusted, I just couldn't eat.
I would never ever ever eat here again. I don't even think I'd have the heart to send an enemy here.
Took my food to go so cannot comment on dining experience. The place is small and a bit hole in the wall-ish but the ambiance wasn't bad (byob like most places on bloomfield ave) I am not an expert on thai food and have not had thai curries much, but my green curry was good. The beef was slightly overcooked but the flavor and heat were there for a nice kick.
Joey's Thai is one of the best Thai that I've had in Montclair. The lunch specials are really good and really cheap. Call ahead and pickup or have them deliver. Either way it comes out quick and delicious.
My personal favorite is the Pad Thai which is very fresh, not oily and has plenty of flavor which a lot of thai restaurants lack and just load it up with peanuts.
If you are dining it don't forget that this place is BYOB!
Don't forget the Tom Yum soup.
We ordered around 9pm on a Saturday via Grubhub. It didn't take long for delivery. I ordered the vegetarian spring rolls and the fried rice with mixed vegetables. I was surprised to see no forks, napkins, soy sauce etc. in the bag. Other than that the food was good.
I don't have too much experience with Thai food, but the service makes up for any shortcomings with the food. Joey (the owner) is quite friendly, and he'll go out of his way to treat his regulars with special treatment, so make sure to chat him up if you get a chance! He's a great guy.
My favorite thing (when in season) is the Mango Sticky Rice. So good so good. I've had some of the curries and the Pad Thai, and I have no complaints. I'd definitely check out Joey Thai if you're in the neighborhood and craving Thai.
Came to JoeyThai for an emergancy lunch spot fix. A couple of us at work had planned to get Thai on a monday, so we come in and go to order from our normal place and no answer, called back a few times over the next 45mins and it just rang… So we needed a solution, que JoeyThai. I gave the place a quick look up having hear of them before. Reviews looked good enough to try and we called for an order. 20 minutes later i was there picking it up. So simple and easy.
As for the food, it was pretty good and i think everyone was quiet satisfied. If they delievered to where i work i might considered changing thai places.
Too small to feel inviting, so I usually order delivery. I'm happy to have Thai food available as an option in town. I go with the thai fried chicken rice (which is by far the best thing I've had from here) and pad thai noodles – oh and the skewers of course. Pretty darn good. I can't get too emotional about it, but it will do the trick when the time is right. The red curry is my real issue here. I taste the spicy burn, but there's no flavor whatsoever. The garlic chicken has tons of flavor. The red curry should be creamy and delicious, not bland and hot.
So clearly with the name Joey Thai, its not your traditional thai place. Its not! Its not good. Staff was nice but the food had no flavor. Def not a place to go to. There are so many more options on bloomfield ave.
