  1. My iced latte tasted great and the mini fruit tart I treated myself to was pretty darn good. I will definitely be back. It's more of a to-go place in my opinion, rather than the kind of cafe you sit to linger and people watch or get work done.  They do have bar style seating along the wall and you can pick up wifi from the library if you need it.

  2. I really enjoy the soups here, I've had the Italian wedding soup, which is tiny meatballs with pasta, unfortunately they discontinued this one. The chicken tortilla is also nice on Tuesdays, but the best one is the shrimp soup on Friday! The pastries are nice, I personal like the wild mushroom puff, could use a little more mushroom though. I wish they had more variety.

  3. I just committed a robbery. I swear I did. $3.95 for 3 big bread rolls and a goat cheese/spinach turnover. WHAT?! Yeah- that's how I know I robbed Savoy Bakery. HA. In the same borough we have places like Pain Quotidien that charge an arm and a leg for a coffee and a pastry, it's difficult to believe places like Savoy exists. Obviously they do.

This place is just awesome. "The coffee's awesome here!" I told the girl at the register, incredulous. She just laughed and thanked me.

Pastries are ridiculously enticing and mocked me for opting to get simply a coffee and not indulging in the past.

Well today I indulged and am glad I did- their pastries rock! AND to my understanding, they're made in-house (at this big kitchen you can see at the back through a huge window) which makes it that much better!

Not only is their regular cup of joe absolutely delicious- strong yet smooth, and it kicks Sbux drip's ass any day, their baked goods are also delicious. I caved and bought a dinner roll (I'll explain) and a goat cheese and spinach turnover.

The DINNER ROLL was my mother's idea so we bought 3- one being MINE, of course. I ate it. Well, actually I took one bite. I really don't know what happened to the rest of the roll– it disappeared before my eyes! 🙁

The turnover was good too although I'd prefer it had more filling– but at a mere $2, I'd gladly have it again. It was a great snack (although I'm sure the calorie intake isn't very snack-like). It was great and got me through a 3 hour work meeting– yikes!

Savoy is a must see, must visit, must try if you're ever in El Barrio! Do trust.

  4. Diamond in the rough, in a tough part of town. Coffee, as a previous reviewer said, is hit or miss. Sometimes cold. Sometimes grounds at the bottom. Also, such a tense environment. I imagine the employees must get up early, and deal with some crankballs in the morning, but it's always so super serious inside. Smile, damnit. Fake it! I started going to Uptown Roasters on 110th instead.

  5. Savoy is all the best parts of Spanish Harlem wrapped up in a little bake spot.

The vibe is casual, minimal, clean. There are a few crate like seating options.Yankee paintings, stone floors, well air conditioned, immaculate and some ambient pop r&b playing in the background.

They sell simple sandwiches and have a daily soup – like chicken tortilla,

The baristas are super professional. Which sounds odd, but they sometimes wear little jackets over summer frocks. It may be to keep the AC frost off their shoulders but for me it is so indicative of what I love about SpaHa…there is dignity and pride available in whatever your do. Plus any day is a day to look cute.

The real treat are light as air, not too sweet pan dulce, cloud like sponge cakes in a wax paper cones, assorted muffins and ridiculously indulgent cakes and refreshing little tarts.

The cakes emphasize fruits and subtle flavor. The baker is light handed with sugar so if you want to try a couple of postres you won't have a sugar hangover. It's a nice spot.

  6. Fantastic coffee, pleasant service, industrial-cute decor, multinational pastries, cheap prices, and some mighty delicious savory buns and turnovers.

In particular, the beef curry bun is flavorful and succulent. Half a minute in the microwave in back, and you've got portable lunch. The spinach and goat cheese turnover was also worthy.

There are a bunch of Chinatown-style buns and cakes, plus pretty Italian pastries in the front case. Spectacular special-occasion cakes can be ordered. Loaves of sliced bread toward the back. Conventional choices like croissants and danish. Basically, whatever you feel in the mood for, they've got it.

We would have tried more, but the display cases were half-empty by late afternoon. Oh well, it's good to have an excuse to return soon.

  7. Really cute bakery complete with rolling pins for door handles!  Have had coffee from here a few times on the way to tutoring and recently tried their cranberry muffin top and cheese danish – both delish!! No bagels though…

  8. Lately coffee has been EXTREMELY hit or miss. Which is fine – they are a bakery after all – but they just upped the prices of all of their coffee, so I really expected the coffee quality to be better now. I'm also not convinced that some of the girls behind the counter know the difference between an espresso drink and brewed coffee.

    Pastries are still good!
