  1. Sonny's is my favorite place to get bagels. It's a small, old school bagel spot on South Orange Avenue. Part of its charm is that it's no frills. You line up, order your bagel, pay, and leave. I don't mean to make it sound so utilitarian; they are just very efficient and good. The ladies are friendly!

The bagels are fresh and have a great taste – soft on the inside, nice crust on the outside, are a good size, and taste so delicious when toasted. I go for an everything bagel mainly when I'm here, but they also have a good salted bagel. They have juices in the cold case, which I usually get, and hot coffee. Recently, Sonny's started selling iced coffe, as well.

Sonny's is a must if you are in South Orange!

  2. Sonny's has made consistently amazing bagels for 50+ years. Quite possibly the best bagel in a 10 mile radius. Maybe the US. Quite possibly the globe. The place may look sketchy, but that's only because they focus every cent into providing excellence in baking. Don't even bother with bagel sandwiches or ridiculous condiments, go for a mixed dozen and grab a brick of cream cheese.

    Done.

    Your life has changed forever…

  3. I'm feeling a bit ambivalent about Sonny's, but voting with my stomach, I'm giving them 4 stars.  The store is old.  Like, old as dirt.  And it's dirty.  And there are holes in the wall.  And it doesn't look like it's been painted since 1967.  And it does not appear that there have been any electrical, HVAC, convenience or technology upgrades done to the place since the Cro-Magnon era.  And the service is, uh, painstakingly slow.  Also, by 10am on a Sunday, they were sold out of nearly their entire bagel stock.

Having said all that, the bagels are fantastic!  Like, some of the best I've had, and I've had a lot of very good bagels in my time.  They are soft and toothsome on the inside with a nearly perfect amount of crispiness on the outside.  The flavors are spot on and the size, though slightly small, is certainly suitable for someone with an average appetite.  I found their veggie cream cheese to be delicious, also.  So, the moral of the story is, don't judge a book by its cover.  The place is a bit jarring to look at and could definitely use some TLC, but aside from that, it's pretty awesome.  Inexpensive and delicious bagels, right in the center of the village.  I think I found my bagel spot!

  4. Great bagel shop has been here for 49 years. excellent bagels excellent coffee and a much better deal than Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts support your local business not the corporate crap.

  5. This place has been facing stiff competition from Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks, as well as a couple of other breakfast/bagel spots in town. Sonny's has stepped up their offerings and has something that gets lost at some of these other businesses – kind service. The ladies here always greet me with a smile or ask how my day is. They're very precise about how my order is and offer me coffee or tea with my bagel. The prices are very good and the bagels are pretty sizable with a good selection to choose from. Sonny's has been around awhile and understandbly so. Never have got a wrong order or was disappointed with my bagel here. I do like the crispiness when my bagel is toasted here the other places ive mentioned may have decent bagels, but if you want a nice crunch. This is where to come.

  6. We like coming here. It's convenient to where we live, no problem parking and the service is good. It smells so fresh in there, just the taste of fresh bagels with some good morning coffee. Hmmmm

  7. The windows are all sweaty and dripping from steam.
    Yes, the bagels are fresh!
You can see them making it!
You can smell them making it!
Not a huge variety, but there's variety.
Can't get my bagel toasted, which only disappointed me for a minute.
After a couple bites, I realized toasting was not necessary.
A few visits later, I can say they're consistently good.
I'm no expert on bagels, but I liked everything I had.
There's a consistent line that moves pretty fast.
    Cash only.

  8. Never thought of coming here with the other bagel place down the street, but I am glad I did! I was honestly wary of trying it from the view of the outside and the small, plain inside. However, I was immediately satisfied once I saw how fresh the bagels were (being made in the morning when I went) and even more satisfied when I ate my bagel.

I ordered a Whole Wheat Everything Bagel and it was perfect. Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside when it was toasted. It wasn't too doughy, but just the right amount (and I'm a dough lover). I got it with Vegetable Cream Cheese and that was also delicious and fresh. They did not overdo it at all like most places. Again, perfect amount. The coffee was also pretty good, but nothing too special (I got it black, so this was expected anyway).

The only reason they're getting 4 (4.9 if I could!!) stars is because they don't have light varieties of their various cream cheeses (only 1/3 fat plain). Either way, GREAT bagels!!
