Was not a huge fan of their cake balls or cupcakes! They tasted artificial, and the cake balls were a little pasty. A very pretty display, though, and very friendly staff.
Carbs, carbs, carbs. My true weakness in life.
Right off the N train stop, I moseyed my way into Parisi to check out the baked goods. If you know me well enough, you know that if there is a bakery in sight…. I must check it out. Since I didn't eat anything all day except for a granola bar and some fruit I needed to have something in my stomach. But I did not want to ruin my appetite. I settled for my item of choice: rainbow cookies.
They were delicious and damn were they cheap! In many long island bakeries they weigh those seperately from the other cookies but I got a few for myself and my friend… under $3. That is unheard of. If I am ever in Astoria, I'll be back.
Ever since I can remember, my family has been going to this bakery to purchase italian bread. They make the most delicious fresh out of the oven italian bread. So fresh that when they hand you the bag, the bread is still warm. We would always buy 2 or 3 because on our way home, we would eat at least 1 loaf. Omg this bread is great. I've tried the whole wheat loaf and it is delicious too. Definitely it a must go for italian bread.
What happened to Parisi Bros Bakery? I stopped by for Italian semolina and a baguette and what I got instead was a poor excuse of an Italian loaf and a double sized Italian bread masquerading as a baguette. I'll give them a pass on the baguette (which tasted as though it was made from frozen dough) but there's is no excuse for the Italian bread. Clearly I need to look elsewhere for bread of just give up the habit
Just a quick update, for the most part I still really like this place, but I wish they baked fresh bread all day. By the end of the day it's just the leftovers that have been sitting out all day and are a little stale. : ( Bake all day!!
If you don't see a huge line, go in. If you do..maybe wait until it calms down because the longer the line the more stress you see on the team working there and they can be a bit snippy.
Their fresh bread is amazing and well priced, I see no reason to back to Wonder bread or whatever you get packaged in a store. This is comparable in cost, better tasting, and fresh. However, the bread is baked early in the morning and whatever they have is whatever they sell. So go super early to pick some up.
Their star item is the made to order Cannolis (My mouth is salivating from the mention of it). The cannoli crust is perfectly textured and really delicious. The filling is creamy and rich but not so much that you cant swallow it and scarf it down at the pace you really want.
Food Recommendation: Cannoli and Olive Loaf
When I used to live in Astoria, I made a weekly trek here. I had almost forgotten how much I frequented it, until I espied it after a recent trip to the Museum of Moving Image. So many joyous remembrances merited a stop in. Parisi has been in the nabe for years and it's easy to understand its popularity. The bread is always fresh and tasty, especially if you come early enough to get it hot or after work. Bread flies out the door here, so you don't get stale loaves. Their semolina is one of my faves. Parisi also does a good job with the nut cookie with the powdered sugar and long name, Kourabiedes, though my suggestion is to not wear black when you pick some up. You won't be able to resist munching; I rather shameless, braved having powdered sugar all over my face, never mind my clothes. Service hasranged from patient to brusque when there is a long line. Decide quickly then. Stick with the Greek pastries, the honey cookies, the sheet cakes like their coffee cakes. You can't go wrong, but you might get plump.
When there is a need for carbo loading with a sweet kick, there are few places that do it as well and as fresh as Parisi Bros along Broadway. They are the master bakers of all sorts of bread, but lots of TLC goes into their array of cookies, cakes, and pastries, which all collectively add to the wonderful aroma that permeates the interior.
The ladies behind the counter are patient, friendly, and very knowledgeable of the entire spectrum of baked goods they offer. They tend to greet and welcome every customer as if they were regulars and have maintained a steady flow of visitors since they opened over 40 years ago.
One could go for their endless shelves of fresh ciabatta bread, heros, baguettes, and rolls. All of them are good, if not exceptional but the real stars are their killer selection of sweets, like their ever popular napoleon, chocolate cannolis, fruit tarts, florentines, and chocolate almond horns.
Something most folks may not realize is they also carry a decent selection of pies here as well, many of which are seasonal and baked quite well. Don't sleep on the rainbow cookies or their freshly brewed ice coffee, it is a hit among the morning rush hour every day.
