I don't understand how one bagel chateau can be so different from the other. The staff is pretty rude and the bagels are way too bready. Not the worst bagels but there's so many better options.
Amazing. There's a reason this place has been in business so long. Delicious, jersey bagels that don't skimp on the cream cheese. It can be hard to find a place to sit but Maplewood is such a lovely town, if it's nice out, sit outside! Definitely worth stopping in.
Hot diggity! After suffering through several visits to the dueling outposts of South Orange (I'm looking at you, Sonny's and Hot Bagels Abroad), I decided to change my sights a bit and I'm so glad I did. Bagel Chateau, along with its regal name, was a much needed and refreshing change for me. My maiden voyage there was a huge success.
I arrived sometime between 8 and 9 on Sunday morning, expecting the worst. Instead, what I found was:
– no line out the door – friendly and competent staff, hustling to keep things moving – only a handful of other customers, happily waiting for their orders – a nice variety of bagels, flagels, salads, and a grill station – plenty of seating and tables, to either dine in, or sit while waiting – fair prices – my new go-to bagel place!
Not bad. In a land that bagel shops are plentiful, this does stand out above the rest. It gives you the normal hole-in-the wall feeling with decent options and food. The bagels are good, nice and crispy with a soft inside, however they're only good fresh. By the next day they're rock hard. Their everything bagel is a solid choice and full of lots of flavor. Unfortunately they're very salty. As a breakfast sandwich they're great and the definitely give you a lot of cream cheese if thats your order and their options are very well made. We also stopped in for lunch and weren't too impressed. My wife had a bologna sandwich on a bagel which was good, however my tuna sandwich on a roll which left little to e desired. Their tuna salad was way too much mayo and not too flavorful. Overall I'd have to say this is a great breakfast choice but not much for anything else. The only real drawback is that it is pretty pricey for what you get.
