Valencia Bakery

“I think the most famous cake they offer is the pineapple filled vanilla cake.”

“The frosting is amazingly sweet, and the cake presentations are always amazing as the bakery glazes the cake perfectly with frosting and other decorations (sugar flowers, leaves, etc.) .”

“I had this place in the back of my head ever since my baby shower and I knew that I was going to go back for his birthday cake.”

  1. Ahh Valencia, I have such fond memories of this place when I was a kid.  In the 70's and 80's Valencia was the definitive NYC Latino birthday party headquarters.  You got a cake with the popular characters of the time (Transformers, Heman, A-Team), a gallon of vanilla ice cream and number candles.  Also sugar flowers and small,  hard, silver balls helped to decorate this sugar masterpiece.

The neighborhood was always sketchy, I remember prostitutes flashing the cars as we drove by in broad day light.   Valencia is located in the notorious Hunts Point section of the Bronx.  Anyone unfamiliar with Hunts Point, watch the HBO documentary "Hookers at the Point" to get a quick education.

After not having Valencias for 25 plus years, I tried a piece the other day and I was instantly transported back to my childhood.   However, my taste buds have matured because damn that shit is sweet.

Valencia is a great place to reminisce about your childhood.  Just add gray Lee Jeans, a black turtleneck (rope chain on the outside) and a Hector Lavoe LP playing on a turntable (Todo tiene su final).

  2. I'm sorry, but the cakes are just not that great. My family raves about the place, but the reality is that it doesn't even measure up to a Whole Foods cake. I find the pineapple filling to taste artificial (and you can see from their ingredients that the filling is processed).  The cake was dry despite it being made "fresh" that morning.  The best part of this place is the history, but sorry – I won't be coming back.
