Stopped by to grab breakfast before hopping on the train. Staff was friendly and efficient. It was my first time ordering a breakfast sandwich from Starbucks and I was pleasantly surprised. My expectations were low after getting an inedible egg sandwich from a Dunkin Donuts at LaGuardia the other day. Although not exactly restaurant quality (this is still a pre made grab and go sandwich), my egg and cheese English muffin was hot and pretty good.
This location is a lifesaver when you've been stuck on a train for five hours with nothing but the train's "meh"-quality coffee. Coming from the east set of tracks, the store is the easiest thing to locate. The lobby is very spacious and nicely designed to keep foot traffic free-flowing.
My experience here was an interesting one. I had ordered a tall strawberry black tea, a very uncommon drink on the east coast I'm guessing, and the bar partner (drink maker) was very eager to make sure he made it correctly. Like other great moments of customer connection, he asked me which store I worked at and congratulated me for making it all the way from Hawaii. The drink was perfect, aside from the lack of "Thai" (condensed milk, a regional favorite) stirred in that I'm used to.
I'd have to say overall, though, that this experience was not the best. The register partner ringing me up had a major attitude and put no effort into hiding it. As a Starbucks addict and a brand-loyal card collector, I naturally swiped eight New York card designs to load for $5 each, a total of $40. She very loudly sighed, and began to swipe them vigorously, despite my polite request for her to "go easy on them". I had even tried to give her a quick-ringing tip for gift cards (there's a secret way to practically swipe-n-go), but she ignored me. Okay, got it – I'm backseat driving, take the long backroad.
It was when I ordered my strawberry black tea that she threw down the "We don't have that, end of story" card. After a short explanation that yes, I know there's no strawberry syrup, and no, I don't expect you to know the recipe, I told her EXACTLY how to write it (or provide the "Ask Me" function): Standard black tea, half the normal amount of water, the other half strawberry. Her bar partner was more than happy to do it, but her attitude about simply ringing the drink up was unnecessary.
Maybe I'm just one of those customers who believes that quality of service severely outweighs the quality of food and beverage, I don't know. I always thought I was nice…
Good thing I have her partner numbers on my receipt.
Friendly, hard-working staff forced to slave away in the north end of Satan's bowels. Considering the ambitious renovations that were done to neighboring businesses like Pret-A-Manager and Magnolia Bakery, you'd think corporate would take some pride in this location and give them a makeover. Instead, you're treated to a dark and dingy coffee shop that just feels dirty all the time, which may be apropo considering you're in Penn Station. The coffee works, though, and I suppose if you're on the run, that's really all that matters.
Admittedly, I am an infrequent starbucks buyer. So when I go to the store I often fumble through the ordering process like a newbie does and typically stick to a normal black coffee. When I saw that starbucks had a happy hour for frappuccino and I was going to be near one I thought it was a great opportunity to try something new. After waiting a few minutes in line I got to the register and showed the cashier the promo on my phone saying "Get half off any Frappuccino® blended beverage from 3-6. Members get early access (and an extra hour)". It was 6:45pm and I was unsure what this extra hour thing was for but she assured me it would be half off. She rang me out and it came to $6. Again I confirmed the promo was right and she shook her head yes and said it wouldn't process until I scanned my card. I scanned my starbucks rewards card with only $3.50 on it and she asked for $2.50 more. I looked at her in confusion because it was as if she had heard nothing I asked prior til now. I again tried to confirm the promotion and she asked a coworker. The response was a yell to the entire line "ITS ONLY FROM 3-6". At that point I was so frustrated I just left empty handed. Simply embarrassing.
I am a Starbucks frequent. I was super excited when I realized that they started the happy hour deal from 3-6 half off frapps and iced drinks. Since I arrived between those hours I was anticipating a longer than usual line. It was a super long line filled with iced and frapp drink orders; the baristas did a good job handling all of the volume. I ordered my usual green tea frapp and it is was tasty! I think that it's a convenient location and they all have a sense of urgency that all Starbucks needs.
My go to Starbucks for penn station. Always a line but it goes very fast so don't walk away. Staff is always friendly and gets the order right the first time. Make up a funny name and let the barista call it out a few times!!
This is probably one of the only other option you'll have before you catch a train here or when you get off a train. In the morning, there will be a line, a very LONG line. Also, this place is not very clean, as there was trash everywhere, and the milk and sugar table had garbage overflowing from the trash bins. The coffee and tea was okay, not like they make it at the Starbucks outside of Penn Station, but I guess because it was so crowded and there was a line, the baristas just hastily threw it in a cup and handed it to you. But if you really need a coffee, and don't want to venture far out of the station, then I guess you can come here.
This one is a solid 'bucks. Have always been given quality service here. And can often find a seat or two. Great spot to meet up with people. Awesome for people watching. narrow shop. But good location, especially during clement weather when you can sit outside on the steps and benches.
