When in Oakland I usually buy my morning bagels from Hot Bagels which is located down the street from Bagels and Pastries.
For some reason I decided to give Bagels and Pastries a chance this morning. I won't do that again.
The bagels here are not anywhere near as good as those at Hot Bagels. I know others on Yelp have heaped praise upon this place, so I guess it's just a matter of personal preference, but I won't be back.
I found the bagels to be tasteless and the chocolate chip muffin unsatisfying.
With that said, everyone working here was very nice and attentive. So they get two stars for service.
As I said, plenty of people seem to like Bagels and Pastries … So it definitely doesn't hurt to give them a shot … But in my opinion, when in Oakland, Hot Bagels cannot be beat.
Awesome fluffy, crispy, and huge bagels here for only $.85. Like many other reviewers, this may now be my go to bagel place in the area. There is often a line but for good reason. Perfect quintessential Jersey bagels.
Not perfect but as close to it as I've had in a long time. I had an whole wheat everything bagel and a Boston creme donut and they hooked me in. The bagel had a good crust on it (if it was a little more crisp I wouldn't have prefaced the review with "4.5") and was very soft and still warm inside. It could have used a little more "everything" seasoning but this still was the best bagel I've had in years.
The donut was just as incredible, really nothing to complain about.
If you're anywhere near this place in the morning, don't look for a better place to get your donut and/or bagel fix.
Update: I've since been back and had an apple turnover which was just about perfect as well! The only addition criticism I have beyond their cash only policy is that they put my cinnamon raisin and everything bagel in the same bag which is really not ideal.

Fresh and clean! It's where you will find me looking for some great bagels and maybe a delish pastry! OH: Best hamantaschen ever!
It can get busy or crowed- but it is worth the wait!
I think the prices and fair and they have big coffee jugs to go as well as if you buy cookies here – you will be very happy.
