Cajun – Perfectly dark roux.”

I was so excited to find this place close to home on Yelp after visiting the big easy a couple months ago. Nola without a doubt is the food capital of America and anyone who goes falls in love with Cajun and creole cuisine, which are hard to find elsewhere. JACKPOT, I thought, when I discovered the Gumbo bros. Unfortunately, I expected too much from them. The bros are all so sweet, but the gumbo was extremely bland. I was so sad. It tasted a little better after adding hot sauce, but it lacked the richness that gumbo has in Nola. Their chicory iced coffee was the saddest, most flavorless cup of unidentifiable liquid I've ever consumed. I might as well have gotten water. And Nola coffee is amazing, I think this stand gave people a bad taste of what Nola is capable of. They were out of beignets too. Overall disappointed and sad that I'm still on a hunt for a place to get my creole/Cajun fix. Honestly Popeyes is a better taste of Nola than this place.
Since I am from Louisiana, and it's normal to crave gumbo, I figured I would try Gumbo Bros while in the City for work. I wasn't overly impressed, but the taste was good. The roux lacked thickness for me and not nearly enough meat. Also, the bowls could be deeper and not as wide, as it's not very easy to eat gumbo in a plate-like structure (picky, eh?, lol).
They are located in Herald Square/34th St.
