  1. I get it that this place is expensive and a little run down, but to honest, it's super close to my apartment, open for most of the day and tends to have whatever I'm looking for, no matter how obscure.  Plus, props to them for carrying such a wide range of Asian products, including multiple flavors of mochi, various Asian candies and Asian snacks, which are super hard to find in the UWS.

Yes, they have produce that isn't the best, but, so does Whole Foods, and Jubilee is definitely cheaper.  And, some products are way over-priced, though usually it's more on a brand basis than an entire food category basis (example: pasta sauce options range from 3.50 to 10.99) so if I'm buying something on a budget I just check the prices before committing.  The meat and fish counters are actually really solid and the staff working the counters is more than happy to help you out if there's a cut of meat or something you want that isn't on display or isn't quite how you want it (e.g., if you want something boned, they can help with that).

If you live nearby, give Jubilee a try.  I would come in, though, versus order delivery, so that you can check out whatever it is that you are buying.

  2. Wow, if you think those "Mexican stock boys" are going out of their way to look at you, you need an ego check. Fo' serious.

Anyway,  I came by here this evening before the Globesonic dance party out on the pier to get myself energized for the steamy dancing and half-naked mermaid women. Iced coffee runs here for two dollars, which to me was shocking, considering the location.

The iced coffee was delicious— fresh and creamy, just the way I like it!

Just a note: Speak up! The coffee lady is shy.

  3. There are so many things wrong with this grocery store. So. Many. Things. Where should I start?

Prices: This place is literally double the price of any other place in the world. I had a craving for Chex. Guess what I paid? Guess? $7 for a box of Chex. (Stupid me for paying it but I really wanted my Chex.)

And don't ever contemplate buying butter at this store because 4 sticks of organic butter will cost you $8.29. You can get the same butter at Fairway or Trader Joe's for $4 less! (My husband was the culprit on this one.)

Staff: Seeing as this place touts itself as a friendly neighborhood market on all it's ads, you would expect at least a smile. Maybe a nod? Well forget it because you won't get any type of acknowledgement at the register. Or anywhere else in the store. Not sure why staff is so miserable here?

Products: So they have a lot of stuff here. So much that I wonder about their inventory control practices and whether or not they utilize LIFO or FIFO. Must be an enormous task for some poor soul. In any case, this place has so much stuff that it's disorganized and they forget  and / or don't concern themselves at all with expiration dates.

Oh and the food in their deli? Looks ancient. Even my husband commented on this and he's been known to eat leftovers after 5 days without blinking an eye.

There is one good thing about this place: It's usually fairly empty. So if nothing else you can overpay without waiting in a 20 minute line. That's about it.

    Consider yourself warned.

  4. I have been shopping here for about a month now and feel like I have a pretty good understanding of this location. There seems to be a good selection of fresh produce, meat, fish, and baked goods on any given day. They also seem to carry a wide variety of your typical shelf items ranging from your everyday olive oil to more ethnic varieties. In short, you can probably find anything you would expect from your average nyc market and more in this store.

In respect to customer service, I have been met with nothing but smiles and helpful assistance when needed. In my opinion, all of these 1 star reviews are either paid fake reviews or snobs who are suffering from Silver Spoon syndrome.

  5. Jubilee marketplace carries such a large variety of so many products. I seem to always find what I need. Not cheap. But, did I mention the variety?  Nayonnaise, a vegan sandwich spread is today's odd item I needed.  They carry two kinds.  Success…again.  Tonite's staff helpful and pleasant.
