  1. This place is expensive as a grocery store, but other than Trader Joe's I don't know of a grocery store that isn't expensive. Regardless, it has everything you need especially when you don't want to travel far just for a gallon of milk & it does deliveries.

  2. Pros:
Clean, friendly, good location, and with a wider selection than some of the other nearby markets like Morton Williams. The strength is really in the breadth of offerings; if you need to find something the odds are they'll have it there. They also sometimes have free cheese samples and wraps available during the day.

    Cons:
More expensive than the other nearby markets. I've comparison-shopped and it's generally better to buy a product elsewhere if you can find it. It can even be more expensive than the nearby-Whole Foods, which isn't ideal. This can be mitigated with the rewards card which can be very helpful.

  3. One downside to living in Manhattan is the lack of good supermarket options.  You either hand over your wallet to Food Emporium or Dean & DeLuca or you slum it at Western Beef or Gristides, which are just nasty places.  You could go to a bodega, but you end up paying $2 for a roll of toilet paper.
That leaves you with D'Agostino's.  Dag is fairly typical in layout, small, with narrow aisles and as such, you compromise variety of stuff that is available.  That said, they have regular name brands at somewhat reasonable prices and the staff is fairly helpful.  They also have some gourmet kind of stuff, but most of the store is regular supermarket stuff.  The produce department is nothing special, but what they do have is pretty good quality, the meat department is ok, but the selection is anemic.  The deli is a mixed bag with great fresh bread from a Portuguese bakery and lousy deli meats & cheeses from Dietz & Watson, yuck.
Dag is no Wegman's, Publix, Albertson's, etc., but it is about the best your are going to get in Manhattan without totally breaking the bank.

  4. The sales at D'ag can be exciting sometimes. In fact, what got me to even step in this grocery store is the $5 for 5 Chobani promotion. I ended up walking out with a box of granola bars, 2 bags of Pirates Booty, and some hummus as well, all on sale. Yes, you do have to browse a bit to find the rest of the sale products, but that's the way to go if you want to save a few bucks on grocery in Manhattan. As much as I love Trader Joe's, I still need name brand name goods every once in a while to supplement.

The layout is similar to Ralph's/Albertson's on the west coast, and it's actually not crowded, probably due to the sky high cost of regular priced items and being all the way out on 10th ave. The employees here are all quite friendly, and might I dare say, even quite helpful – too rare in New York. Oh, and this place is way cleaner than Gristides, cheaper than Amish Market, and not as crowded/overpriced/touristy as Food Emporium. I'll definitely drop by now & then to seek out the sale items, but I'll still go elsewhere for my "main" grocery items.

  5. This supermarket is downstairs from where I am living this summer so I figured I would check it out and buy some staple foods.  I spent $30 on six items…Cheerios, Saltines, bananas, yogurt, eggs and ground turkey.  Wow.  So I decided to order Fresh Direct instead which I am still debating the merits of doing again.  NYC food is just expensive no matter where you go but I just felt a bit ripped off by this supermarket.  Also the selection is quite limited and I like a bit of variety or at least feeling like I have options.

  6. 3.5-stars, which is rather impressive for a Manhattan grocery store, let alone this chain, which doesn't have a grand reputation.  I'd even give 4-stars, if they had a prepared foods section to rival some of the UES locations.

Very clean, well-stocked, decent selection, some items I have difficulty finding elsewhere, about the same price points (if you have a D'ag card, and take advantage of those deals) as I'd pay at other basic grocery stores, and mostly courteous/friendly employees (which is a diamond in the rough thing in terms of this chain).

  7. I give this location 3 stars for the produce and the selection of basic cooking supplies.  For my money, I still prefer to go to the greenmarkets, but hey, D'Ag's works in a pinch.

-1 star for the ineptitude of the cashiers.
-1 star for having some very off-colored meats
