Best Market
“I rated this 5 because compared to some of the other grocery stores I've stumbled across in Harlem this is a rare gem!”
“I don't feel the need now to go to fairway (which is out of my way) I am truly grateful for this new market–and living so near by.”
“There's an olive bar, cheese section, and a craft beers section upstairs.”

I shop at this market regularly and there are definitely good and bad things about it
pros:
– affordable by nyc standards (better than any key foods, gristededs, d'agostinos, etc)
– good beer selection, usually wine is on sale too! great for me 🙂
– guys working at the deli counter are unbeleivably nice. and they carry boars head meat
– variety of yogurts, dairy products, cereals
– recently started stocking spinach at cheaper prices- a staple in my diet so this is SOOO wonderful!
– meat is very fresh
– fresh sqeeezed juices from here are the bomb! i feel so healthy eating them – just wish they were not so expensive (on a graduate student budget here)
cons:
– NOBODY works on the lower level on week nights. ive come here on multiple occasions and had to search for a long time to find someone who could help me. however, on the weekends there are tons of people out on the floor which doesnt really make sense…
– the apples here are DISGUSTING. i stopped eating them and it used to be a staple in my diet (unless i have time to go to a different grocery store)
– sushi does not advertise all of the ingredients in it. this is an issue for me because i will not touch anything spicy … but it could be more problematic for people with allergies. The label already has a few ingredients typed on it so i don't get why all of them can't be listed…
– does not carry any frozen chicken that is not flavored. i have complained to ppl about it multiple times. why would a grocery store carry buffalo and barbque seasoned chicken but not plain? it baffles me
I have not bought seafood from here (apart from the decieving sushi) and am curious what that is like?
I love this market!!! I initially came here to try the new ice cream "Tipsy Scoops"…its alcohol infused ice cream and its AMAZING!!! But i love a great grocery store so of course i bought more than that. As i was walking toward the register i noticed the nice bakery section. My favorite muffins caught my eye and my knees buckled. What can i say, I'm weak! So i also bought red velvet muffins and lemon poppyseed muffins. Winning!!! I will definitely be back…tomorrow…for more tipsy scoops ice cream! So many flavors to try. Warning: they'ren$10 a jar/pint. But well worth the splurge. You'll either indulge or wonder what it tastes like. I had the red velvet martini flavor! Many more to go!!
I live a bit further uptown from this location and was very upset to find that there were no good grocery stores nearby when I moved to the area. I love food and enjoy cooking at home so this was a tough pill to swallow. Fairway on the river is not easy for me to access via public transit and I'm not a fan of Pathmark, so I settled for an OK Fine Fare down the street with occasional trips to Trader Joe's on the way home from work. I carried on with this silliness for a good 6 months until one day I decided to take a walk a little bit further downtown and passed this market. Initially I wrote it off as another fine fare type store, but curiosity got the best of me and I went in to find it was so much more. The heavens called down to me and the angels sang! At last, a good food market, and only two subway stops away!
They have everything you need in one place, a deli complete with an artisanal cheese selection, a butcher, fresh seafood, a bakery, a pizza place, a juice bar, sushi, good produce, prepared foods, a BBQ pit and even a craft beer store! The selection is the best I've found in the area and prices are pretty reasonable. I'm sure it's not perfect, as some reviewers have mentioned, but what grocery store in the city is? There will always be something to complain about. This place works just fine for me though.
Best Yet Market! The one stop shop (for a reality check that not everyone who is employed necessarily likes their job). This market is convenient at times and allows you to purchase every item on your grocery list. Unfortunately the incompetency and disinterest of the neighborhood hires can be entirely too frustrating depending on the day.
For example, I used to come here bright and early for a fresh juice or bagel around 8:00 a.m. Unless the hours are posted incorrectly (states they open at 7:00 a.m., Mon-Sun) my calculations tell me that they should have been open for an hour by then. However, the attitude and fluster as soon as you show up to the register to order says otherwise.
Recently myself and several other people waited for the person behind the counter to finish stacking bread and glare at another coworker as if to say "you better help them because I'm not moving" – wow, sorry for the interruption. Oh! And God forbid you want lox to go with your bagel. Some of the people become so overwhelmed with stress, you would think it wasn't a market where they could just go and tear open a new pack of lox to slap it on your bagel, instead they make it seem that they have to go out and catch the fish. I even offered to go get the lox myself since no one seemed capable.
The lines: almost always a hot mess.
To the hiring manager, I am all for keeping it local (hiring as well), but better screening/monitoring is necessary.
As good as its going to get in Harlem and it's really a great store, wish it was bigger, but the product offering is great! It's worth the walk or train ride uptown!
I saw some courageous mice running around in the store this Saturday in the middle of the pre-Super Bowl rush. The elderly man in the aisle and I just looked at each other, totally bonding over our mutual disgust. I… no. Just no. NEVER AGAIN.
I seriously don't know why I didn't know anything about Best Market until this month. It's become one of my favorite markets, and I love coming here. While visiting my MIL, we make frequent stops here for all sorts of things.
Stepping in, you're greeted by a bakery section with a small pizza section as well. They have fresh loafs of breads, desserts, prepackaged cakes/cheesecakes, a smoothie counter, and several types of pizza (veggie, pepperoni, chicken, etc.). Moving through the store, everything is well laid out. It can be confusing if it's you're first time, but you'll get used to it in no time. The first level of the store has the checkout lanes, a sushi stop, fresh juice section, and a deli in the back. They also have a public restroom that is clean!!!!
The top level has a wide variety of beer selections and also has several small tables if you want to chill out and enjoy your food there.
The lower level has all of your veggies, fruits, poultry/seafood/etc., and frozen foods. I have to say for the amount of people that come through here, it's always organized – and we've come here in the mornings, afternoons, and evenings. There are always employees on the floor restocking or organizing the shelves.
With that being said, the employees here are friendly and attentive, and we've never had a bad encounter. They've also gone out of their way to help us out! Best Market has awesome deals, and they have fresh products. Their fruit is always fresh and they have great selections.
This is definitely a great spot to visit!
There aren't many options for lunch in this area besides fried fast food and bodega snacks, but this market fills the void. There are grab and go salads and sandwiches, soups, pizza, sushi, and a barbecue hot bar in the back. Solid options. There's a seating area upstairs where you can also pay for your meal, bypassing the line for everyone checking out with groceries. Definitely worth stopping by.
Aside, for a grocery store, they have a HUGE selection of beer. Great variety.
