“I even enjoy the cheesy 80's music they play over the PA 🙂

Several orders of magnitude better than Gristede's.

Can't really compete with Trader Joe's or Whole Foods, but great for basic staples.”

“But when it goes, and you have to degrade yourself with Gristede's, man oh Manischevitz are you going to miss the quality and hard work and reliability that you never paid any mind to before.”

“The store can be a little over-priced, but you can score a good deal if you shop the sale items.”

  1. After going out late nights it's important to hydrate. Sometimes you dont think those things through while you're drinking. Thank goodness for 24 hour supermarkets. Given I wandered through here much longer than I should have, I was probably also ducking the rain. All sorts of munchies and beverages to be had. Alas, water is all I needed and that's what I got before heading back into the night into the subway…

  2. Surprisingly not too bad for a very traditional grocery store. They seem to know their neighborhood pretty well, with an excellent choice of cheeses and other high end products, and of course all of the regular brands. Clean, well organized and well-stocked. And the prices are not too bad, even though they are of course more than you would find at Trader Joe's.  If I lived in the neighborhood I would certainly shop here at least part of the time.

  3. This supermarket is organized nicely and it's well-lit. However it's very small and cramped, and I was less than impressed by the quality of the produce and the product selection/variety. I did like that they had a decent beer selection and that you could mix and match different beers in a 6 pack. It's certainly nicer than some of the other super market choices we have in the area, but nothing to write home about.

  4. The Quick: Not my favorite grocery store, but considering the options in the area it's one of the most affordable with fresh produce.

The Details: Although there are plenty of cash registers, they never seem have many open. On the plus side, there's always a great sale on Greek yogurt which is part of my daily routine. There's also a really nice garden right outside the store you can walk through.

The Damage: Obviously less expensive than a Whole Foods, but nowhere near the value of Trader Joe's.

  5. Morton Williams is more expensive than Whole Foods with the produce value of Smiths, Vons, Ralph's, or Fresh Market. I'd think twice about coming here unless for a dire emergency.

  6. Did I mention how friendly the deli people were? When they noticed I was ordering a large portion of meat and salads they recommended the crunchy vegetable salad. It was their favorite- and they work there. I visit in the daytime and (unlike the deli guys at neighboring Gristedes) I can always find someone to help me with a smile.

Their cashiers are not always as good…

This place also harbors a large hard cider selection, including Harpoon cider, which I suspect uses Harpoon beer yeast. They also carry Rekorderlig, a effervescent Swedish Pear cider, in the larger bottles. This one is light and sweet. Morton Williams also allows you to purchase individual bottles, so you don't have to buy the whole six pack to try out a beer.

  7. its a grocery store. BUT. don't let the more slanderous reviews fool you: there are far dirtier and pricier ones in manhattan. this place also seems to be adequately stocked way more than not.

  8. Convenient? Yes. Dirty? Yes. Pricy? Yes.

My brother lives pretty much next door to this market and man, what a great place to have nearby. However, it could use a facelift and a good scrub, because it is dirty. I feel a little dirty when I walk out and that's never a good thing.

Anyways, good for the forgotten items and the last minute needs, but overall, I'd stick to Trader Joe's up or downtown.
