Yummmmm. If you're in terminal 2 of JFK, I higgggghhly recommend that you go here for a little snack. It was s perfect treat. I got the fall special with peanut butter and the tie dye one. They were both so good! And only a $1 each!
Maybe Melissa has an established product following and I am just out of the loop, but I was underwhelmed by this place. Cute setup, good selection of flavors, but the "cupcakes" themselves are like 1/5th the size of a regular mini cupcake- they seem to be going for the "just the tops" crowd, but when I'm paying dollar for a piece of undercooked cake the size of my thumbnail, it better be amazing.
But it's not- tastes like the dough is barely cooked, but I will say that the flavors are very distinct. PB&J and their version of Mint Chocolate Chip were both good, Red Velvet was very basic, Tie Dye seems to be their take on classic Confetti Cake. Didn't care for their featured Crunch flavor or the chocolate-covered versions.
Side note: they also give out an absurd amount of "featured product" ads, brand stickers and tattoos, and other marketing materials with every order. I shouldn't have as many flyers as "cupcakes" with my order.
This is the new thing in New York – tiny little cupcakes for $1.00 each. I had been to an NYU Bookstore open house the day before where they served these little treasures. They are meant to be eaten in one bite so you can enjoy the clever blending of flavors. I bought 12 for $10 for my husband (huge cupcake lover!) and asked for one of each flavor to test out as many flavors as possible.
They are so friggin' adorable!!! And they come with a menu so you can match up which ones you're eating. I know it's a gimmick but they are moist and delicious. Fun to share!
Baked by Melissa is such a cute little place! It's always refreshing to find a unique food shop at an airport. I do assume that the other locations in NYC are better, however, I always enjoy my cupcakes from Baked by Melissa.
The tiny size of the cupcakes are ideal for me because I would rather try a bunch of different types than have one huge cupcake. I always get the pack of six miniature cupcakes and bring them on the plane with me. Each one is delicious!
There are so many flavors to choose from. My favorite cupcakes are: pancake, tie-dye, salted caramel and s'mores. They also have macaroons, which I am yet to try, but they look great!
$1/macaroon or mini-cupcake!
I bought a couple of 5-packs of macaroons because it packed well for traveling but after eating them, I wish I had bought more!! The workers were very patient and sweet and advised that I freeze them if I wasn't going to be eating them right away. Even after coming out of the freezer, the macaroons tasted fresh and delicious. Next time I will try the cupcakes as well!
I was rushing through customs to get to a connecting flight to Fort Lauderdale as they were boarding passengers. In amidst of all this hustle and bustle, I managed to drop by Baked by Melissa for a quick order of a dozen cupcakes. The guy behind the counter saw the urgency in my face although I tried to keep my composure with a smile (smiling mostly due to the sight of a pretty display of cupcakes galore) — he quickly suggested getting one of everything since they had 12 flavors out. BOOM. Done. I only requested to opt out Chocolate Mint so I may have two of the Cotton Candy Cuparons (yes, a mini cupcake topped with a macaron shell). I'm also stunned that the cuparons are the same price as the rest of the mini cuppies, because usually macarons are pricy so I would expect an extra $1 or $0.50 charge for the delicate topping.
In all, the cupcakes are VERY pretty, in which the term "cute" is super appropriate (it'll be the first word you'll think of at first sight). I enjoyed all the gourmet bites — made me wish they were bigger so I may enjoy some more! And the to-go bag came with the visual menu, business card, and a sticker of the logo (I was very excited for the sticker). Oh and if you're wondering, yes, I made it to my flight (being one of the last few passengers to board, hehe).
I've seen this store a lot in the streets of NYC and finally tried it at the airport!
$3 for 3 mini cupcakes:
*Tye Dye- more color than flavor but good
*Red Velvet-nice and moist
*Strawberry cupcaroon- mini cupcake with half of a mini macaroon on top. Cute and delicious!!
I seriously wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised. The hype is not just the looks but also the taste. They came in a small cute box that screamed for a picture and mini ads/flyers about the store. Apparently, they also have flavor of the month, cute idea.
Service was typical NYC. Dry and rude, sigh…
But it satisfies the sweet tooth!
Reading all the reviews makes me sad they didn't offer any cupcakes with macarons on top! Excited to find a Baked by Melissa at the terminal, I bought four 12 piece boxes, one of each flavor, and a 6 piece box all as gifts. I found out adding the tie dye ribbon costs $1 each but what the hey, it looks pretty and presentable. It was very nice of the employees to wrap the boxes up with plastic wrap before adding bows to seal in freshness. Right before our flight, we ate almost a whole dozen so I ran back to the store and bought the 25 piece bubble container for $20 a few minutes before boarding. Good thing we were at the closest gate! We really liked the cookies & cream, mint cookie, red velvet, chocolate chip pancake, and April flavor chocolate Babka with cinnamon filling.
I interacted with both employees and they were polite and patient. I added on the 4th dozen while she was tying the ribbon. We also got some free cupcake stickers and temporary tattoos. Pricey at $12/dozen but great NYC gift to bring back home!
