I'm a 2 minute walk from Bakeway and it's my go-to place for breakfast and coffee. The iced coffees are made just right. All the breakfast food is tasty. The ham and cheese brioche, in particular, is amazing. They also have a well stocked and varied cold drink selection. The staff is cool and friendly. The interior is modern looking and the chairs they have there are super comfortable.
This is a good "got-what-you-need" kind of coffee shop — it's got on one side an open refrigerated section of to-go pastas, salads, yogurts, drinks, etc.; in the middle, a grab-what-you-want pastries; and still behind the sale counter more pastries and coffee. They serve a "light" and "dark" roast. Plus – the prices are rather reasonable (this is Astoria after all!).
The A/C seems to be a bit high the few times I've been, but no matter, if the weather is fine, go out to their bench outside and people watch.
Also – nice place to catch up with a book. No one will rush you out.
PS – the tip jar seems to rotate between funny big-ticket items (not just Maserati!)
This place is so cute! I love the marble seating on one side, and the very comfy wooden seats on the other. The coffee is on the dark side, even their "light roast" is on the dark side. They have a good selection of teas. Prices aren't bad. Wifi is free. Ample outlets:seating ratio. CLEAN! I even noticed that the employees come by to wipe down the tables when someone leaves. Next time I will try some of those fabulous looking cupcakes. It's hilarious how the tip jar says Maserati fund. =)
Minus? Terribly cold, with A/C blasting at an unreasonable temperature.
This is my "go to" coffee shop. It is the only thing that is close to where I live and will do for now.
The things I love about Bakeway:
1. They know my drink
2. The croissants are to die for! So rich and buttery and moist! Not that flakey.
3. The Greek guys there are so funny and I love talking to them. They always seem interested in what I am doing.
4. I feel very comfortable there and that is very important to me.
I don't like that much:
1. The coffee is not the best but it will do.
2. When I order an iced latte they do some weird thing to it. They blend it up in one of those milk shake machines. They say "It's the European way." HAHA!!
3. They don't add the ice after the whole deal. They pour the hot stuff over the ice. Yuck
4. No simple syrup for my iced drinks so I have to continually stir and stir to dislove my sugar.
I always say that I can tell a great cafe to an OK one. If they have simple syrup they know what they are doing.
I think Bakeway is great but I think they can do better. I don't think they cater to much to the people. They seem stuck in their ways.
