  1. The crusty bread is the reason I am not a size 6.

I don't eat the pastries or anything, just the breads which are off the hook.  If you go at around 5 they have loaves that are warm and just out of the oven.  I can never make it home without pulling off the end and eating it.

  2. I went to Calandra's NY Day for desserts to take to a dinner I was attending. I ended up
with the pecan pie and a small assortment of desserts. Carrot cake, lemon meringue pie, lemon cake and some cannoli's. The pie was really good. A little cold but good. The filling for the cannoli's was perfect but it was a little too crunchy for me. The lemon cake was the star for me. It was so yummy. I didn't like the meringue on the lemon pie & the carrot cake was also good. I'll be going back soon for a nice assortment of desserts.

  3. Although they have opened sister locations on Fairfield and Caldwell the original location in Newark in my opinion still is the best "BREAD BAKERY" in the entire world.  That right no better bread anywhere on the planet that simple.

Hot bread every hour French, semolina, panelle, round rolls, Italian Rolls, you name it nothing compares.  We still every year buy all our loaves here for our Christmas eve extravaganza 2 Dozen Plus loaves and I once bought bread here for our tailgates for guys from Florida and their quote " I could eat a Mustard Sandwich on this bread and be happy".

I know bakeries are like anything else points of debate but to me no place comes close.

Review for "BREAD ONLY" no comments on Pastries etc.

  4. I came here with family to get a strawberry short cake during the holidays.  The didn't have anymore so they offered to whip up a fresh one while we waited.  It only took about 15 minutes which was great because had I had to stay any longer then that, I would have bought out the entire store. Everything looked and smelled amazing!

The only thing I didn't care for was their giant chocolate chip cookies. Perhaps they'd been out too long or something but they were very hard to bite into.

All in all, a great place and will definitely come again when I am back in town.

  5. Pilsbury Ain't Got Nothin' On This Bakery!

I had Calandra's fresh Italian bread -I died – went to heaven – revived myself and came back for more! If you have a gluten allergy, I feel bad for you son! Calandra's somehow manages to make an absolutely "perfect" load of bread! So good, that I would love to find an excuse to come here more often and eat their bread until my stomach feels like a bag of rocks and it looks like I'm pregnant!

Go Here – Enjoy – Come Back Again and Again and AGAIN!!! Num Num !

  6. I love local bakeries. This one is the most spacious and modern looking I've ever been to. I purchased pecan and apple pies and both were good. I surprised my best friend with a pecan pie for her bday and almost everyone at her party asked her where the pie came from.  On my last visit I ordered slices of tiramisu and that was also good. The prices are decent: for the $15.75 for the apple, $18 for the pecan pie and $3.50 a slice for the tiramisu.  I will definitely keep coming back for my pie needs.

  7. This is far from my favorite bakery in Essex County. My go-to bakery has been and probably always will be Gencarelli's in Bloomfield. Gencarelli's has a much wider variety, and I've never found a hair in a baked good there like I have from here.

It took me a few years to get over that hair before I went back, which I did recently. I eased my way back into this place by starting with a nata, which did not taste so fresh. After that, I've made a few more visits to give them third, fourth and fifth chances and I just can't seem to get on board. The breakfast pasty options are just sad, nor do they taste fresh. This applied to both cinnamon raisin roll and a danish. I can't tell if they're improperly storing the pastries or if they're just sitting out too long, but given the foot traffic in and out of here, you would think nothing has time to go stale.

There's a big sign out front advertising their French and Italian bread and wedding cakes. In full disclosure, I've never tried any of these, but at this stage, I'm not sure I want to.

  8. My favorite italian bakery! Red velvet and blue velvet everything are my first options. But there's so much to choose from. I grew up going to this bakery. Being a jersey girl, you either ordered from here or Supreme. Calandra's is the best in my opinion because they've always been consistent. For as long as I remember their food is always on point! I usually order my birthday cakes from here. And whenever my family is having an event, we look here first! Top of the list!
