  1. Ever wander around random places in Newark and noticed they had red velvet cupcakes, but there was never an oven at that those eateries to enable them to bake 5 dozen cupcakes, let alone ice and decorate them? WELLLLL, they were being brought in by Sweet Retreat Boutique (SRB) and they have now opened their own place with a LOT more variety.

This place is AMAZING!!! Their cupcakes melt in your mouth and definitelyyyyy fulfill any sweet tooth craving! SO happy it cake in Newark because between law school and work…. I needed a place that just made the day a little better.

I had a banana muffin with a cream cheese frosting (not too buttery or too sweet, just the perfect amount) and when I just inquired whether they had coconut, he said he had it in the back and would give to me to try (on-the-house…. now that calls for celebration!).

I will definitely be back and try each one of their flavors (pineapple cream is next! Right now they have a halloween theme I thought was very clever and cute (decorations on his cupcake are adorable).

It's 2 cupcakes for $5, so get in there, TRY one for yourself and take another for a friend! I will be back!

(they also do specialty cakes for events)

  2. Sweet Retreat Is Bound To Send Me Into A Human Peep

Confession: I came into Sweet Retreat Boutique only planning to buy one cupcake, until I saw the sign outside that said "$2.00 Cupcake Tuesdays" So I bought two cupcakes only intending to eat one today and one tomorrow; I ate both cupcakes in 10 minutes…Was it worth it? YES!

Sweet Retreat Boutique is a hidden gem in the Downtown Newark area that will please any sugar craving and make your wildest fat camp fantasies come true!

-Perfect portion size(s), minus the fact that I wanted more because they are amazing
-Huge variety – Snickers, Carrot, Red Velvet, Pineapple Cream Cheese, Caramel Corn, Banana Split and the list goes on and on!
-My Snickers cupcake had a piece of snickers in the middle = Win
-Moist, yet the cupcake doesn't fall apart as soon as you remove the liner
-The cupcakes are nummy-nummy-nom-nom DELICIOUS! Better than most of the cupcakes that I've had at well known, fancy-schmancy bakeries in NYC
    -Priced appropriately
-Clean, organized, cute and bright inside
-The frosting is simply scrumptious! Not too sweet and doesn't swallow the cupcake in a frosting sinkhole
-Friendly staff, fast service and you can tell that they take pride in what they do

I will definitely be back here sooner than I would like to admit and I can't wait to try some of Sweet Retreat Boutiques other flavors!

  3. I love cupcakes. I love cream cheese frosting. Therefore, I love this place.

Parking/driving can be annoying around here at times but usually you can find parking. I think a lot of the customers probably just walk there. I went when they had a buy 2 get 1 free special. I got chocolate, , and red velvet. All were really good and I especially liked the frosting. I think they all (not sure about the oreo) had a cream cheese frosting. The frosting was delicious. So many cupcake places have frostings that are too sweet or taste artificial or just not good. Not the case here.

I am not sure why people are complaining about the prices. I think the prices are decent for cupcakes and considering that they spend time decorating them and such. It was especially a good deal due to the 1 I got for free.

My only complaint was about the oreo cupcake. It was a vanilla cupcake which did not make much sense to me and had a filling that I did not think added anything. I really liked the chocolate and red velvet though.

Give this place a try. I prefer their cupcakes to those at ArtKitchen though I believe the ones here are a little more expensive.

Also, I am not sure what is going on with the address. I think 17-21 refers to all the business on the street because I could have sworn the place next door was "17" and almost left in disappointment that the place had closed. Just look for cupcakes or follow your nose.

(this is a ridiculously long review for a cupcake place. Somehow, I am not surprised]

  4. Finally I've managed to make my way to Sweet Retreat! I've lived across from there for a year but I only realized that it existed about three months ago! Thy operate on a standard 10 – 5 schedule and seeing as I go to work before that and come back after it closes, I've never been able to sample them…until today!

They had a buy 8 get 4 free special however I didn't need 12 cupcakes so I got one, the Oreo blast cupcake. This was intense cream cheese goodness with a little cookie and chocolate sauce on top. Definitely a must go in Newark! Now if only I could convince them to stay open a bit longer…
