All beer distributors were not created equal.
I used to think they were all the same, just like wine stores, but this is a fallacy.
I walk into the open area and have cases of beer, soda and ice to choose from. I can pick up a a six pack, keg, pay and drive away. There is no ambiance. The pallets of stacked beer and concrete floors give me the sterile feeling which is similar to a hospital.
Wait, there is a dedicated rack of craft beer. Southern Tier? Ommegang? Dogfish Head? Brooklyn? St Bernardus? Stone? There are plenty of nice brews to try. Of course, the mass produced products from Anheuser-Busch Inbev, MillerCoors and Heinken are available too.
Romantic setting? No. Clean? Yes. Polite and courteous staff? Yes. Craft beer selection that caters to beer geeks, snobs, wimps and women? Yes.
Tommy, the owner has been in the beer distribution business for over 20 years and has introduced craft beers for the last five. The first time I entered the store, he immediately greeted me, asked me how I discovered this business and offered samples. He lured me to small area with a bunch of taps and gave me a taste of the beers. I've tried half of them before, but I couldn't turn down sweet nectar.
Tommy works hard to make every customer leave happy with a good product. I appreciate that. The Bronx is often shunned in the pecking order of the five boroughs. For beer lovers, this place is great and it is difficult to leave here empty handed.
Excuse me, while I fill up my growler.

Walking into most beer distributors is kind of like walking into your creepy neighbor's dank, dark basement. You're only there due to the lure of promised alcohol (because what creepy neighbor doesn't want to give you alcohol?) and you don't really look around, head straight for what you came for, and are in and out in 5 minutes flat, hoping that whatever your feet touched on the floor can't transmit through your shoes to the rest of your body.
Oh, your distributor wasn't like that? Fancy for you then.
Skibbos is a cut above the rest, and a lot has to do with the ownerOther than the growler, and Tommy, Skibbos is awesome because of the following:
1. Great beer selection. Incredibly vast.
2. Great staff. Tommy is knowledgeable about what he sells, and will get items that he doesn't have upon request. The rest of the staff is friendly, and extremely helpful.
3. It's clean. Clean and BRIGHT.
4. Prices are reasonable.
5. You can sample the beers on tap before purchasing. And there's always new varieties.
If these reasons aren't enough to get you over to Skibbo's, I don't know what would be. You can head over to the gross, dank distributor and pick up your case of Natty Light I guess….
