I will go here when I am looking for obscure, hard to find, asian produce, such as durian (why I need that I don't know) or lotus root ( which i actually do eat) or Jackfruit, starfruit, dried goji berry (alot cheaper than the normal grocery store). They do not have a huge variety of Bao, which disappointed me. Also, their prepared food section doesn't look all that clean or organized. I was only there to see if they had fresh bao and for some produce. I didn't spend too much time looking at the other packaged foods.
This place was a godsend when it first opened several years ago due to the lack of large Asian supermarkets in Jersey City. However, it has gone significantly downhill since then.
I went there on a Friday evening to buy some frozen dumplings, and I was dismayed to find the freezer door stuck open with no one working at all in the area to notice. I left it open because clearly, the food was already bad and whoever is in charge really needed to examine it. (They'll probably just shut the door though…)
There were more frozen dumplings in a freezer case that didn't even keep the food frozen; the dumplings were half defrosted in this freezer case.
They also had a hot pot freezer case with the frozen beef balls, fish balls, etc. UNCOVERED in containers using a "serve yourself" format. Uh, no thanks. These items used to be placed in the small styrofoam trays and wrapped in plastic like they do the meats and some of the seafood. I guess they became lazy at some point…
Not wanting to waste my drive over, I searched for some fruit to bring back. The problem is that most produce is left outside, all day in the heat, and as a result, the already old produce becomes even less fresh during the course of the day. I walked out with just two apples that weren't stored outside; it took me at least five minutes to locate just two that were acceptable.
It would seem that management thinks that sanitary conditions are unimportant. The place is in bad need of a deep cleaning.
So, in conclusion, if you need something in a box (such as tea), a can, or a bottle, then it is safe to buy here. But for anything else that has a remote chance of spoilage, please avoid this place like the plague.
I cannot wait until they open the Asian Food Market on Route 440. I do hope that the standards will be a bit higher there than at 555. Their Piscataway store is not bad, but who knows what will happen?
Until then, go with Chinatown in NYC, the H-Mart in Ridgefield or Little Ferry, the Kam Man in East Hanover, or the small Vietnamese markets on Newark Avenue.
I was on my way to Jersey City and decided to stop by and pick up a few small items. It's a small Asian supermarket owned by Chinese people. Although the the place is small, they do carry lots of Asian/Chinese items so don't let the store size fool you. There is a small parking lot in front of the store.
I'm rating this place two stars which is pretty generous. First, some of their produce are listed as an on sale item but it's more expensive than other Asian supermarket. Second, their items are not fresh and as a matter of fact, the produce looks old and stale.
They do sell Chinese take out and roast pork buns. The takeout food tastes decent and pricing is fair. They also have sushi freshly prepared but I was full so I didn't buy it. The sushi looks good though. I did order a green tea bubble tea. It was the most disgusting bubble tea I've ever tasted. It tasted like some green colored dye milk, bland and their pearls were chewy. Two sips and I threw out the full drink. Not coming back hear again when there's so much more options out there.
I'm torn. I love the prices of course. If you're looking for fruits and veggies that aren't marked up like crazy, this is your spot. Even organic eggs and milk are much cheaper here than any other grocery store that I frequent. What I especially love about this place is the variety–particularly when it comes to the Asian cuisine (obviously). I loveeeee all things Asian, so I enjoy looking for uncommon ingredients to make Chinese/Thai/Korean/Vietnamese dishes. Full disclosure: I'm no chef, but I do love experimenting.
The one thing I really can't stand about this place is how small it is. I never grab a cart because I know it's impossible to maneuver throughout the aisles with one. So what ends up happening is I fill my basket and drag my worn down body to the register as I grunt and pant like a dog. So frustrating! I can also relate to others with the whole "dingy" feel. You certainly can't eat off of these floors.
Haven't shopped here yet but my husband has several times and recently bought such delicious salmon (so tasty and fresh, high quality) for only $5/lb (but tasting like $25-30/lb) baby bok choy also delicious!! excited to find a cheap Asian market closer than china town or Long Island NY Mart!
not the best customer service….but the prices and the quality of fish/seafood is amazing. That's all I come here to get. I got spanish mackerel for $2.99 a pound. They clean and filet it for you too! I also got a big pack of shrimp 4 pounds for $15….I will be coming back here to get my seafood groceries here on out….
Pretty aging Supermarket right by the side of southbound Tonnelle Ave. During rush hours I wouldn't even think about coming here because of traffic on Tonnelle making this place bit hard to get to..
I knew about the place but haven't really been coming here until recently. I have to agree with other reviews that there are better Asian grocies out there although outside of JC. I really only come here for some specific Chinese frozen food items that I can't find in Hmart or Mitsuwa. I do agree their produce and veggies don't look all that fresh but as far as frozen packaged items goes I haven't had a problem yet.
They also have a food court here and sell some hot and ready to eat foods that I haven't had the chance of trying but they look decent. Juding from other patrons I would think most people come here for the fresh seafood as usually toward the back where the butchers are gets most people 🙂 Its definitely worth a visit if you never been to see if there's anything you need but don't expect too much out of it.
Unless you plan to cook ethnic, Asian dishes, there may be little to nothing that you would need or find at the 555 Asian Supermarket. You are better off going to the H Mart or otherwise if you are looking for variety outside of ethnic/Asian products. I happened to be on the 1 & 9, and made a short pit stop at this market for some basic food items. As a first-time customer, I had a bit of skepticism. For one, the appearance from the outside and inside looks rather unkept. I'm not sure if I would shop here again mainly due to the fact their selection is limited, pricing is no better or cheaper than any other Asian supermarket, and the quality of the products they sell require much discerning.
On the inside, it appears like any typical smaller Asian mart. Slightly disorganized, but if you know what you are looking for, then you will know where to look. If you're looking for a specific ingredient for Asian cuisine, they have selection for that. When I perused the shelves, I immediately began to question the quality and age of their products. I went off to look for some Oolong tea. I placed my finger on one of the tea boxes and came across a layer of dust. I was a bit appalled. Maybe not a lot of people shop for tea here, but this was rather unacceptable. While searching through other random products, I noticed they all had a thin layer of dust. It appears they don't clear their shelves often and/or leave certain products sitting there for a long period of time. I went to look for some banana sauce, which is basically like ketchup, and it appeared as though it was sitting there for quite awhile or just old as liquid was all settled to the top of the bottle. I can't speak for all their products as their meats and produce looked okay, but appearances can't always speak for themselves. The (unpopular) products sitting on their shelves have questionable origins/age. Don't be surprised if you find something past expiration because I may have come across a few things that may have been.
As stated before, most items seemed fine, but the mostly forgotten shelved items require attention and discerning. The layers of dust on top of the products' packaging evidently reflects on cleanliness or lack thereof. The pricing of items is also surprisingly higher or just average when compared to an H Mart or other major grocery chain. Overall, a rather unkept supermarket that needs a bit of work.
