  1. This Shoprite is the the worst grocery store in the history of grocery stores. It gets the award for worst supermarket in the tri-state area.

First, it is always crowded and you will spend 30+ minutes in the check out line. Doesn't matter when you go, just plan to wait. Second, they never have the food that I am looking for. Chobani yogurt must fall off the truck before it gets to this Shoprite. The supermarket is dirty and messy. You take one look at the fruit and you know it can be trusted to give you indigestion. Lastly, the parking lot is a death trap. Pothotles, bad drivers, limited spots. Plus they will tow your car if you are in there too long as they suspect you may have walked over to Newport Mall.  Avoid this Shoprite at all costs.

  2. Besides it having a liquor store and a dunk n donuts inside (which is a plus in my book), this place can get pretty packed! Its right next to a bjs and near newport mall so traffic build up will ALWAYS happen. What i hate is its like musical chairs for shopping carts because the cart collectors are not doing their job!, i tend to catch them with headphones on just playing the sideline…..prices are awesome, especially if you have a shoprite card, with it you get the shoprite deal prices .

  3. I really, really try not to go to this place if I don't have to. They'll have what you need, but being as there's a grocery store shortage in Jersey City, it is ALWAYS packed. Long lines, crowded aisles, and people rushing everywhere make it a not so fun shopping experience.

As for pros, they have a large parking lot as well as a liquor store attached in the back of the store that I didn't notice the first few times I came here, so you can make it a one stop shop.

  4. This place raises my blood pressure. And makes me want to stress eat – and it's perfect since I am within arms reach of all the junk foods (I am currently eating Oreos purchased from there that I just didn't need..). But ok. Ok weak, can't blame my eating habits on the induced stress I experience from walking in to this place. This shoprite unapologetically is what it is – a hit or miss, questionably stocked establishment that just happens to be extremely central. For those who live local, you will learn quickly the best times to go..or generally completely avoid and go to the acme.

But in a pinch, if there's any kind of semblance of a holiday or a weekend, expect crazy lines and poorly stocked shelves. Will this ever change? Probably not. This shoprite has been here forever and all the high rises in the world won't change that.

  5. This is the worst grocery store I have ever stepped foot in.  I try to avoid it at all cost, I would rather drive half an hour away to Clifton to go to Stop'n'Shop and Trader Joe's than come here.

Every time I buy something, it is guaranteed that at least a few items are spoiled (Ie: onions, can't see in the middle until you cut it and see that half of the core is mushy and brown) or expired (shame on me, should have read the label but gee, blame me for trusting the grocery store to do the right thing).

AVOID this place at all cost.

  6. I was staying at Westin hotel and needed some snacks water and fruits and a double sided tape for the brides and groom before the wedding.  I found this place when I was on the way to v barbershop.  I'm from west coast and this place reminds me of a fusion of food for less and vons. Most things are well priced and super quick check out lines.

  7. HOLY HELL. Do NOT go here on a Saturday morning unless absolutely desperate!

I grew up in a small town in Northwestern Connecticut with a Super Stop & Shop comparable in size to this Shop Rite. That being said, my hometown has about 3,300 people, so there is never ever a crown. Living in NYC for 6 & 1/2 years has made me one, well adept to deal with grocery store crowds (thank you, Columbus Circle Whole Foods), but conversely, two, has made me used to shopping in small bodegas and tiny Fine Fares and C-Towns. This was some next level crowded suburban ish.

Granted, anything you could need, you can find at this Shop Rite. Still, due to the onslaught of early morning shoppers, I found trouble finding a few items I needed. I was in Jersey City due to the fact that I was going to be making brunch at a friend's apartment a few blocks away. Small boxes of sugar were hard to find (I def didn't need a 3 pound bag), 12 packs of eggs were scarce (though 36 packs of eggs were easy to find!), and there wasn't a single container of whipping cream of any size. People wheeled their shopping carts along with little regard for others. It was like a horrible game of bumper cars in some parts of the store, especially in the dairy section! When finally checking out, my cashier was a bit blase and hastily shoved my dozen eggs into a bag, along with a container of milk and a plastic container of croissants. A little more care would have been appreciated.

…and, in hindsight, I'm finding this review to come across as whiny. Haaa. Sorry. This is not my intention, but I'm voicing my frustrations as a one-time shopper. Overall, I find this to be a good grocery store that definitely has any shopper covered, no matter what they're looking for. The in-store Dunkin' Donuts is, admittedly, a pretty nice touch as well.

  8. Definitely an interesting shop – crazy shopping hours & lines, but hard to tell what will happen when this shop closes up in a few years to make way for renovations.

They have a great selection of Asian cuts of meat – chicken feet, pork skin, etc. They really know their demographic. And their deals – some of them are quite good. Vegetables & fruit need some work. Found plenty of rotten stuff still on the shelves. While it needs some work on the lines and queuing, it's a very reasonable grocery shop so long as you know what you're going for.
