If ever there was a place that could rival my favorite BBQ joint (yelp.com/biz/dinosaur-ba… then Mables is it.
We haven't actually eaten in the restaurant but have gotten take out a few times now.
It's not perfect but it has a lot of things going for it…
Pulled Pork Sandwich + One Side ($12.95)
+ Nice smoky pork.
– Smallish portion.
+/- Standard sesame bun that's too big for the portion of pork.
++ The BBQ sauce! Delish! Smokey sweet AND tangy goodness. I put the entire container they gave me on my sandwich. Yum yum yum!
++ Mac & Cheese. Creamy creamy creamy mac and cheese. Standard elbow macaroni cooked al dente and covered in a superbly creamy sauce. It could use a little black pepper but other than that its pretty much perfect.
It's hard not to compare it to other bbq joints (namely Dino). I wish the portions and the price point were a bit more even, or maybe they gave you two sides for $12.95… but won't hesitate to stop back in next time I'm in the neighborhood. The mac and cheese is worth a visit all on its own.
I was drunk and very hungry. Coming to Mables over Fette Sau was a great idea, because we got way more food for significantly less money. The inside reminds of a beer garden, with it's dim lighting and long wooden picnic tables. We were among the last customers, so the bartender took our BBQ order.
We got beef brisket, pulled pork, and ribs along with mac and cheese, corn bread, and a Frito Pie. The pulled pork was OK, but the beef brisket was amazingly tender, with a nice smoky flavor. The ribs were fall off the bone tender, juicy, and smoky but we could only get a half rack because it was all they had left. The mac and cheese looked pretty gray, but that could have been the lighting. It was nice and cheesy, despite it's less than aesthetic appearance. Frito Pie was salty as expected, and the corn bread kinda sucked.
I would definitely return.
Came here around 9pm and they were out of brisket. Sad that I didn't get to try that since it seems to be their best meat but what I did get to try did not disappoint. I was able to leave satisfied. We got the 3 meat platter that comes with 3 sides to share between two people. For the meats, we chose the sausage, pulled pork, and ribs. For the sides, we got corn bread, Mac n cheese, and candied yam. The sausage was good. The ribs was the best out of the 3, the meat fell off the bone. The pulled pork was the weakest in flavor and was kinda bland on its own, definitely needed to put in the bbq sauce. All the sides were pretty good. I wouldn't say they were great but pretty good. Nothing to be amazed at but they went well with the meal and there's nothing to complain about them.
Have nothing negative to say about Mable's!
Came here for a birthday celebration with about 20 other individuals. A long table was prepared for us to sit and mingle as we waited for our food to arrive. It was a bit too dark for my liking but overall the ambience was good.
We opted for the "family style" meals which was surprisingly enough for all of us. They brought out frito chip bags which had some sort of ground meat which cheese and sour cream on the side – delish. At the same time they also brought out tortilla chips with nacho cheese dip, can't go wrong!
Then, the main meals came out about 10 min later – brisket (pretty good although a bit too salty for my liking), ribs (scrumptious and fell off the bone), pulled pork (my favorite of the night!) sausage (didn't get a chance to try), and the sides were beans, beets, mac n cheese, potato salad, corn bread, coleslaw and pickles.
My fiancé and I took some food to go because we wanted to pack it for lunch the next day. I highly recommend to try this place out.
So, I have to admit I am not from the South. But I am a damn Yankee, having lived in Virginia, Kentucky, and North Carolina for 16 years. Mables is the southern bbq I have dreamed about in my Yankee brain! The pork had the perfect browned crust without the globs of pork fat. The greens were well done with thick chunks of bacon, but we're not wilted or greasy. The Mac and cheese was thick and creamy with full flavor cheese and melt-in-your-mouth elbow macaroni. The cole slaw was the perfect creamy accompiament. Add the pickled jalapeño and onions!!! Wow!!! The best bbq I have ever had and I've had a lot, for a Yankee anyway!
+++
– huge portions, enough to feed two people with one serving
– st louis ribs
++
– beef brisket
– great re-heat value–food tasted better on the second day
+
– enjoyed the service
– creamy mac and cheese was really creamy
– beans and sweet potatoes were good, but i feel left a lot to de desired
–
– I was kind of disappointed with the cornbread
I found the quality at Mables to be extremely consistent. Everything that I tried was good. I appreciated the simplicity of the menu. My only wish was that the bar had more craft beers.
We shared a half pound of brisket along with Mac n cheese and borracho beans. The brisket was moist and juicy. It easily cut apart with a fork. It was delicious in their Barbeque sauce! I highly recommend the sauce. I'd definitely pick some up at the grocery store.
The Mac n cheese was quite creamy; there was no shortage of cheese! The borracho beans are pinto beans cooked with peppers in beer. I'd recommend the Mac n cheese over the borracho beans.
Can't really find great BBQ in NYC so I've been seen Mable's all over Instagram lately and had to check it out in Brooklyn. We got the deluxe platter which I think was $42 for two. It comes with three meats and three sides. We ordered the pulled pork, brisket, and ribs. The sides we ordered beans, potato salad and their macaroni and cheese. The meats were great. I think my favorite was the brisket. It was so tender and had great flavors. The ribs were good too. Fell right off the bone. Pulled pork was good but nothing really special in my opinion. The sides were I think the downfall. Mac and cheese was the only really good one. I wasn't too big of a fan of the potato salad or beans.
I liked how outside the bathrooms, they had a place to wash your hands from the food. Anyone that eats BBQ knows you need a good rinsing after all this sauce. I would come again and possibly switch up some of the sides and I think then, I'll have my perfect BBQ meal.
