  1. What an inexpensive gem in the heart of the west village! The place looks like a long archway decorated with soccer memorabilia and Indian traditional deities. The staff kindly and warmly welcomes you and sits you down in the burgundy long room and you are transported.

They have the best prix-fix! We went for dinner for 2 and only paid $34 filling happy, stuffed and satisfied! For $15 you get a samosa and another fried item made of shredded veggies, you can pick a meat, a fish or a vegetarian entree, it comes with naan bread and basmati rice, then you have a rice pudding and traditional tea with milk to finish. The food is great!

The samosas were traditional, deep fried and would have suffice as an entire meal Haha! The other fried thing was even better! For entree we had the chicken tikka masala in a creamed tomato sauce and the grilled marinated lamb! Both dish were fresh, bursting with flavored and filling. The side rice dish was enough to feed a family of five and the fresh naan bread dipped in the tikka sauce was a trip for your taste buds! Finishing an already delicious meal with a sweet and creamy rice pudding was very cool.

Would love to return when the Indian fever strikes again or order a delivery! Highly recommend!

  2. This place was a great find. Great Indian food, reasonably priced food and wine (especially for the area), and friendly staff. We wandered in here for a late dinner on a Friday night and were pleasantly surprised. The interior is quirkily decorated, too, which made it fun. We'll definitely be back.

  3. Indian food is my favorite over anything. I'm a huge foodie and love trying different indian restaurants.

This was-by far-the best most authentic indian restaurant I've ever been to.

I'll start with the location. Kinda small but makes for a more personable atmosphere. Point: they don't try to pack you in like a bunch of sardines.

Customer service: Arrived right in the crack of dinner time and it was packed, but somehow the host managed to seat us immediately. I also liked the fact that the owner stopped by our table to see how we were doing. By the end of the night, he brought us pudding on the house too!

THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR: The food. We had coconut poori, shrimp masala, and lamb malai. We thought two entree dishes and one appetizer wouldn't be enough, but the portions are big (HUGE PLUS). Everything was absolutely delicious.

No complaints–I wouldn't change anything about this place.

p.s. My bf left them a $20 tip.

  4. This is a cute little spot, but the food is quite average. My main dish (chana saag) was good, but not great. The naan was slightly cold. The masala chai was basically just water. Service was fine.

  5. The pricing here compared to what they offer makes this place a great deal.  Food here is authentic and the flavours are surprising.  I had three vegetarian options and wasn't disappointed by any of them.  The place needs some decor help though.  It's very small so expect about 20 people max in there. I found that it was rather hot so if you are not happy with warm, smaller places this may not be for you.  Food is rock solid though and that's the real reason to come here.  Service was friendly and we were treated to a dessert and tea complimentary.  I really enjoyed the restaurant.

  6. How the heck have I missed this place?  I have walked up and down Bleecker probably 50 times since moving to NYC and have never seen this place before.  In fact, I even doubted its existence to the person that wanted to go there.

Anyway, Ghandi Cafe does exist and does serve Indian food.  I know, because I went there.  It is a small, cozy little place with a charming atmosphere and a friendly staff.  We came on a Saturday night and is was packed.

We both got chicken tikka masala.  It was very tasty and the sauce was rich and flavorful.  It also came with a side of naan that was very good as well.  The service here was pretty good, too.  Who knew? A decent Indian place in the West Village that I have never seen before.

  7. Romantic atmosphere for Indian food – good date spot. Unfortunately the food was underwhelming. They didn't give us the flatbread like they did other tables, but brought it over with our order of Naan. The Naan was great, couldnt complain and we enjoyed the Samosas as well. Wine was well price probably around $25 a bottle.
It's a bit of a tight spot so I was surprised when they gave us a table for 4 even though we were only 2.
The Chicken Tikka Massala looked different than anywhere else I have had it, lighter in color and more tomatoey. Not so much pizazz.
The bigger problem was the rice-undercooked! Making the meal, underwhelming.
They give you a mango yogurt for dessert but it tasted like nothing.
They also give you some chai tea which was fairly tastless as well.

What a bummer! I remember really enjoying this place about 10 years ago. Maybe I had a less refined palette back then.

At least its pretty cheap for the area.

  8. Do not come with more than 4 people. Although we sat 7, it was not comfortable and I just felt like we were in their way.

I had the Chicken Tikka Masala that I get everywhere I go and the Garlic Naan that I also always have to get. I know Tikka Masala is generally more on the sweet side but it was really sweet here. The menu said this was going to be mild but I wish they would have let us pick the spice level.

I also tried the Shrimp Vindaloo and Lamb Vindaloo. Now when the menu says "very hot" for these, they are not kidding! I am not sure where this spice level rank with other restaurants we've been through but my friends were having a hard time with this and was red in the face but it was still good! You just had to be able to handle it or counter it with some Tikka Masala. Hahh

I was disappointed by their garlic naan or just naan in general (my friend had a plan one). It was super puffy/bubbly which is how I like my pizza but I like my naans flat and crunchy.

I think there were 3 people, 1 that seemed like he was the manager, running tables and a full house. It took 15 minutes and 4 asks to get our bill. We really wouldn't mind sitting longer if we were not in a rush to get to our bus. They did offer us rice pudding and tea as an apology but we REALLY didn't have time. They brought out the rice pudding and we scarfed it down. It was pretty good but we had to go! Bye bye!
