Mezcals Mexican Restaurant
“The nachos with chorizo are a great accompaniment to margaritas or as an appetizers.”
“Perfect balance of flavors and the green sauce was just spicy enough to offset the cheesiness.”
“Keep up the good work Mexcals, love the tacos and enchiladas, but fix that fajita!”

So… This place is a REAL Mexican restaurant…there's none of that "authentic" crap. I know this because I watched the bartender make a pitcher of something that was filled to the brim w/Tequila! Jeez-Louise!!! They don't skimp on alcohol at this place. To make matters better, it's HAPPY HOUR …are you ready? … EVERYDAY!! From Noon to 7PM! ($6 margaritas & $5 beers)
Appetizer: We usually don't order any if there's chips or bread; they serve tortillas chips and sauce – nice and spicy!
I ordered Chicken Fajitas and she ordered Chicken Enchiladas.
VERDICT: The fajitas was cool. I didn't eat the flour tortillas as it came with refried beans, rice and guacamole. She didn't enjoy her enchiladas …she said it was dry and unimpressive. The margaritas though? That was AWESOME. You will feel a little buzz after the first one (please remember to drink water in between drinks to avoid intoxication).
I'd give them 3 stars. We weren't too impressed with the food (although the chicken fajitas was great!) I would only eat here after drinking (as we all know everything tastes great when you're a little buzzed).
I pretty much concur with the rest of the reviews. The happy hour margaritas are really good. Even though I don't really think a 6 dollar drink is that amazing of deal, (I'm spoiled from Blockheads $3 all-day ridiculously strong margaritas) Mezcal's are nicely sized, tasty, and strong.
The complimentary chips and salsa are always a welcome touch, and their chips come out warm with extra spicy salsa. The guacamole is not that great… It's fresh tasting but predominantly raw white onions which I cannot stomach. The quesadillas are pretty small, but the chicken (shredded as opposed to grilled) is very flavorful and tender.
This place is one of the few acceptable "authentic" Mexican restaurants I've encountered since I've moved to NYC, but I'm still searching for one that delivers the perfection I've previously encountered in Louisiana, Texas, and North Carolina. Sure, Louisiana and Texas are a hop, skip, and a jump away from Mexico, so it's a no-brainer that you can find authentic Mexican cuisine there… but NYC has a ton of immigrants, so I don't know why I'm having a hard time finding a true, honest-to-goodness Mexican meal here!
Mezcals tries really hard at providing an authentic Mexican food experience, and, for the most part, they've done alright– they have a large selection of margaritas (from well brands to top shelf) in a variety of flavors (traditional and fruit varieties), and their Mexican food staples (burritos, enchiladas, chile relleños) are pretty much on target with what you would expect from an authentic Mexican restaurant. One thing, however, that seemed odd to me was that they attempted to doctor up some of their traditional Mexican dishes with added ingredients… possibly to make the dishes seem more "gourmet". For example, my partner, Vinny, ordered the chicken fajitas, and chick peas were mixed in with the fajita veggies! Very odd.
As for atmosphere, Mezcals is not fancy, and the inside is what you would expect from a dive-y Mexican restaurant– it's decorated with colorful knickknacks and lights. Also note that their prices are a bit high… I mean, this place is not classy and not located in a ritzy neighborhood, so I question why their prices are so high.
EH. If you have had decent mexican food, you will not be "WOWED" with this place whatsoever. The servers seemed very confused and disorganized. They were bringing over the wrong dishes….all at the wrong times….yelling at each other in spanish….awkward.
I tried my friends tamale cake and it literally tasted like a peppermint patty LOL. whaaat?
There are so many other options in that area that I suggest you walk a few feet away & try something else!
If you're looking for mediocre mexican food and good drinks… you won't go wrong here.
Their drinks are really good! Service is great as well. The food isn't anything to die for but it doesn't kill you either lol. I enjoyed my chicken quesadilla. Although the chicken was a little dry they managed to soak it up in a flavorful sauce. This place has a cute ambiance to it. Everything was smooth until we got the bill. This restaurant is quite archaic with their "diner" style bill. Everything was added up on those old school green slips and come to find out the waiter over charged us with duplicating a few items. We were able to figure it all out but seriously…just upgrade the system it's 2015 for crying out loud.
I've eaten here twice, about 12 years apart. I remember really disliking it way back when, and avoiding it ever since (and occasionally registering mild surprise when I'd walk past and see they were still in business). I don't remember exactly what went awry last time, but it must have been a pretty powerful experience, as, while I think I'm typically pretty agreeable, when a friend suggested meeting here before a show we were attending at Union Hall, I all but begged that we pick something else. Unfortunately, her pragmatic concerns about time and proximity to the show won out.
This is just poor food, that will sit in your stomach like a rock for hours afterwards (and thus cut into your drinking ability/enjoyment at your ensuing event). It tasted bland and greasy and, frankly, not fresh. And its pretty expensive Mexican, to boot. Service was inoffensive, but didn't exactly save the place – we didn't get our drinks until we asked a second time (and then after the food arrived) – and it wasn't very crowded at all.
I generally try to reserve one star ratings for horror stories – your customer service blow-ups, food poisoning, visible vermin, contracting the plague… but the food here has been so bad – apparently over such a long period of time – that I can't just can't deign to go two.
I was strolling with an old friend through Park Slope while looking for a place to eat. We were both craving tacos, and after passing 6 places, decided to roll a die and see which one it would land on. Going in order backwards from El Pollito, and Los Pollitos 2, we landed on Mezcal's. Now this has long been a neighborhood spot for margaritas. The food I wasn't sure about but I knew it had to be good. The interior is a bit snug, a very lively colored bar atmosphere. We chose to sit outside since we wanted a bit more lighting around us, and it was a nice day outside. The menu had so many options- but we finally decided on sharing a Chorizo Super Nachos. I ordered the Cerritos quesadilla, and my friend the Zacazonapan Fajitas Combo. We also got a half pitcher of blue sangria to split. The nachos arrived, and I was unimpressed by the food. The food had a typical Mexican takeout look- orange rice, refried bean paste. The nachos were alright to say for that. No pico de gallo on them, so they were missing a flavor kick. The drinks were what made this place good- the sangria was super strong! A half pitcher filled 4 glasses for us each- well worth the $20 price tag. The quesadillas I had contained vegetables and cheese with green chile verde. The quesadilla was alright, pretty good sauce. The sizzling platter was a little better, it came with tortillas on the side with refried beans, cheese, and lettuce. The food took us a while to finish, it didn't have the appeal we wanted. We ended up getting caught in the rain and having wet soggy food. It took us a long time to finish the sangria- every sip had us internally grimacing. I would definitely try this place again, and come mainly for drinks instead of the food!
Cozy, dimly-lit, nice decor, decent food:
_ Complimentary chips with spicy salsa.
_ CAMPEROS Vegetarian combo $12
guacamole taco / vege enchilada / cheese tostada
All blended together and seemed to have all the same fillings.
Might return.
