Oh Cake Man Raven…how i've missed you! If you know my posts on here fellow Yelpers, you know that getting a 5 star rating out of me is really hard! I am such a foodie and my expectations are high. So when I give a 5 star rating you should head there! Run not walk!!!
Background- I have been a big fan of Cake Man Raven's red velvet cake since he was in Brooklyn down the street from the Jollof African restaurant over on Fulton! I loved heading there for sweet red velvet after i'd go to Jollof.
However, my accessibility to Cake Man Raven's red velvet cake changed a few years ago when I relocated to upstate NY. A year laster I came back home to visit only to find that he was gone
I tried the offerings from the new place, Pieces of Velvet which is his his former staff, but it was not the same. I will say that I do not like chocolate although i love Cake Man Raven's Red Velvet. However, this is because it is light and airy while being moist and dense in flavor all in one! I feel like i'm eating velvety red velvet and not a Dunkin Hines Double chocolate cake. Pieces of V just did not hit the mark for me!
The next day, I headed to Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn as I head he was there! SUCCESS!!! I got my slices and headed back upstate (6 hours away)!
A year later i came back, headed to Atlantic and he was gone
If you know the Temptations song "Papa was a rolling stone," well so was Cake Man Raven! But as a devoted fan of his craft I followed wherever he laid his hat…or better yet set up shop.
Now a year later, I headed back downstate and eagerly called to get me some yummy slices! OMG They don't sell them anymore and my options were cupcakes or a whole cake. Man…i'm on weight watchers so i knew that buying a whole cake was bad news but hey you gota do what you gota do when you want the nuts and icing filling in the middle!
Unfortunately, due to the overwheling response they received prior to my impromptu order, I was SOL for Saturday. However, they went above and beyond allowing I was able to pick it up on Sunday despite being closed!
Talk about fantastic customer service!!!
So how was it??? Omg! It was amazing. So good i must freeze it so i can ensure portion control.
Thank you so much Cake Man Raven and your really really gorgeous employee/cop for making my dream of enjoying "non-overly chocolate" red velvet a reality!!!!
