This place was just okay. I live in Manhattan, so next time I'm in Flushing, I would rather save myself for dessert someplace else.
The concept is great: ice cream on top of fresh taiyaki stuffed with some flavor of your choice? Hell yes!
I ordered the Hokkaido milk flavor on top of taiyaki stuffed with custard. There weren't that many in front of us, but the wait was still relatively long (15-20 minutes). To their credit, this is because all the taiyaki is made fresh to order, so I won't fault them too much for that. The unfortunate thing is when the lines got really long behind us, and it got ridiculously crowded inside while everyone waited.
Because it's ice cream (more like frozen yogurt?) on top of hot taiyaki, it tends to melt quickly… So better eat quickly. It gets messy.
This place was a decent trip and worth a try, but nothing I would dream about coming back to Flushing for… There are too many other great dessert places out there.
This taiyaki place is located in a tiny boutique on Roosevelt Avenue; don't walk by too fast or you might miss it.
I came in during the afternoon with one guest before me. I was extremely excited to try out the product, as I had never really had a chance to try this Japanese dessert before. The sort serve ice cream was great, and the taiyaki was soft and warm, which really meshed well with the soft serve.
However, my issue was the wait time. Since the boutique they are located in is so small, you are able to watch the staff work on your creation… And also mess up horribly. I watched as the worker took three attempted to make my taiyaki, the first two times not coming out the right way. Each one took about two minutes to make, and had me standing there with a disdained look, wanting to continue on with my day. Although there was only one person waiting in front of me, it took over ten minutes to receive my dessert. Being the nonconfrontational person I am, I pretended not to notice as I stood there awkwardly for a long period of time.
Three stars for the product, minus two for the lengthy wait time with nobody ahead of me, and limited soft serve menu.
*Only cash.
*Fish-shaped dessert = $5.99.
If you're like me, then I assume you are interested in this place so you can have a cute Instagram photo. Great. Awesome. Now, move on.
First, we enter and to the right we have Ice & Pan. We position our eyes up at the screens above us to look at the menu. Because the display on the screen changes swiftly, we shimmy our way to the cash register where they have one tangible menu board. Yes, one. There, we are greeted, or harassed, by a loud and obnoxious girl. The fact that she had a heavy accent wouldn't have been a factor if she was kindly speaking to us. But when I'm slowly having impairments in my hearing because you're yelling at my face, I have a problem. Luckily, I am known to have a pretty loud resounding voice so I can talk over practically anyone, but this only happens if I choose to unleash this inner-power. After I see this rude girl cutting my friend off as my friend was ordering, and talking over my friend, I order mine loudly and proudly, shutting the girl up. Really disliked my encounter with her and am not planning to come back solely because of her. Okay, I know. An entire paragraph dedicated to describing my experience with the obnoxious girl. Yes, I agree that this is enough.
Now, on to the actual dessert. I ordered the chocolate ice cream, custard filling, and strawberry topping. The entire fish dessert is $5.99. I got one strawberry (an extremely sour two halves), one piece of Peppero (aka pocky stick), a sprinkle of pop rocks on top (WHY WHY NO PLEASE STOP THIS), and a good amount of chocolate ice cream. First off, the sprinkle of pop rocks is a no-go for me. It's so freaking sour and doesn't compliment anything in the dessert. Just stop it. Next, the ice cream is good because chocolate ice cream is always good. It's not strawberry season so okay, I understand the disgusting strawberry I received. The Peppero was a nice touch, I like it. Was this worth SIX BUCKS? Yeah, never again friends. Definitely just another place that gets recognition because of social media and then slowly dies out because they somehow couldn't afford to employ decent workers or price their menu listings reasonably.
Came here to see what the hype was all about with this signature taiyaki and it was quite a disappointment.
I don't understand why competing businesses locate next to one another all on the same block with different kinds of dessert gimmicks.
The set up of this place is so disorganized, you basically order first then go back on the line to wait for your order and it gets really crowded while you're waiting. I literally waited over 15 min on a Friday night with a few ppl ahead of me. Not only the place but the workers looked disorganized and inexperienced in what they were doing as well.
I ordered the taiyaki with custard filling, matcha ice cream and marshmallow. It was visually appealing but didn't taste as good as it looked, it actually didn't taste good at all! I don't know why they added the rainbow pop rocks on top…it was so sour! The matcha ice cream was bland & had no taste, fish cake was dry & soggy and the custard was lumpy & disgusting. The only thing good was the pic I took of the taiyaki.
So so so good. Hidden on the busy street, can easily miss it. Let's start with how attractive the fish looks but now onto the taste. The waffle fish was cooked perfectly, still moist but crispy at the same time. Filled with your choice of filling, I went with custard and my friend went with taro. Both were superb but the custard would def be the winner. Lastly, their softserve had real bold flavors. I ordered matcha and it was great, my friend ordered milk and it was so creamy and good. So in love with this place. think I like it better than Rui milk.
I had a major ice cream craving last week, so I decided to stop by Ice & Pan on my way home from work just to try their ice cream taiyaki. You can opt for just the ice cream, or the taiyaki + ice cream. There are lots of options to customize your order:
– Ice cream: matcha, sesame, Hokkaido milk, chocolate
– Taiyaki filling: red bean, custard, matcha, taro
– Toppings: mochi, fruit, popcorn, pretzels, and a few others
I decided to get a taiyaki with red bean filling, matcha ice cream, and mochi. I was the only one in line and my order took a while to make (maybe 7 minutes or so; it wasn't exactly a speedy dessert option). The mochi topping was actually just mochi pieces skewered on a stick that was stuck into the ice cream, which was… different (I can't say I preferred it this way). The ice cream also came topped with a pocky stick and some sprinkles. Luckily everything was put in a cup to make eating it easier, and I was also given a spoon to eat the ice cream. The ice cream itself was pretty good, but by the time I ate it all, the taiyaki on the bottom had gotten a bit soggy so it didn't taste that great. The ice cream had also melted over the taiyaki which made it a sticky mess when it came to taking it out of the cup and eating it with my hands.
Conclusion: Ice & Pan's ice cream taiyaki is one of those desserts that's better for Instagramming and less so for actually eating.
After seeing all the Instagram crazed photos of Takiyaki filled with ice cream and fresh fruits, I knew I had to come here for to try this delicious dessert and for photo-ops.
This place is actually located in a store on Main Street across the street from Macy's and across from a bubble tea stand. I guess you can call this place a hole-in-the-wall. When you walk in, it's going to be the first stand on your right. After careful consideration, I decided upon the Takiyaki with matcha ice cream and strawberries. What's great about this place is that they make the Takiyaki fresh with the batter rather than making it beforehand and letting it sit and hardening before customers buy it. Thus, each Takiyaki is guaranteed fresh off of the mold when you order it.
Taste-wise, I like my fishy and it was kind cute…I gotta admit. After taking a few pictures for snapchat and Instagram and I was surprised to find a custard-like filling on the bottom of the taiyaki. That was a big plus.
Would I recommend this place to a friend? Yes. Would I be back again? Probably.
So hard to keep up with all the ice cream fads in nyc – this is another one that combines Asian flavored soft serve on top of a taiyaki fish. All the Instagram picture makes it look really appealing but flavor wise it was just okay. I had the black sesame soft serve on top of a red bean filled taiyaki and strawberry topping. The soft serve was really icy and didn't have as much flavor as I hoped. The taiyaki was good though.
They had three different soft serves – green tea, sesame and milk. You could also choose from several fillings – red bean, taro, custard and green tea. They make each taiyaki fresh on the spot with the filling of your choice.
