For someone with a healthy fear of ghosts, I have no problems being haunted by a bakery. Last year, I had the superb hazelnut chocolate cake from here. For weeks after, I heard whispers of " Visit again, buy cake!". I might have consulted an exorcist but I heard the echoes rumbling in my stomach even as I stepped into holy places, a clear sign that exceptional pastry was nothing less than divine.
So when sis and I came to Rye this year, I welcomed another haunting as I urged her to visit this bakery. This time, with no hazelnut chocolate cake in sight, the strawberry shortcake took its place. It was exceptional, with a light, almost biscuit type of cake, flavored with almond and a cream that was slightly heavier than whipped cream, but not as dense as buttercream. Perhaps a Swiss cream, undoubtedly delicious. The almond flavor was a twist that worked well and did not overpower the taste of the strawberry. Nor was it too sweet. That was the kind of cake that would resurface in my dreams, causing me to wake up drooling. And yes, I could have been levitating too, because great cake makes me float towards the heavens. Sis thought the cake was good but wasn't a fan of the almond flavor. The brioche bread pudding was another winner, with two surprising inventive twists over the regular bread pudding that I opted not to try. This brioche version has thinly julienned apples mixed with the brioche, and a layer of meringue. I detest cinnamon, but oh, the flavor was subtle and the mouth feel of the bread pudding, light and creamy, was delightful enough to forgive the baker. As far as the top layer of meringue, I could have eaten a tray of it, so fluffy it was. Like the strawberry shortcake, this again was not overly sweet, an adult pastry. I haven't been to this bakery enough, but it seems that the baker is doing splendid job if he is being creative with classics.
We were fortunate enough again not to encounter the bad service other Yelpers complained about because I want to return with no qualms. My server was friendly and left me to ogle politely before I decided on what to buy. The place remains clean and pretty enough to eat in if you can snag one of the tables. If you have a fondness for high end pastries made exceptionally well, do make this your home if you can!
Scrumptous sweets & savories- a real treat! Crowded with good reason. I longed to try this spot since it closed once as I meandered around the quaint town. I chedked out the Yelp reviews and aimed to return- this time I bought alot of dough.
A mixed salad of chick peas, tuna, apples, & more was mega tasty. Rolls also unusually good. Cookies, cakes, BANANA Raspberry, CHOCOLate . bread pudding is TDF! A goat cheese pizza had a pastry crust and tasted delicously. As someone of Austrian decent having spent much time in Germany and once to Austria- they are great bakers and Patisserie Salzburg is one of those great authentic bakeries with amazing goods to savor. A stroll around scenic Rye afterwards is a must.
I love this part of Rye. Purchase Street is a great stretch with lots of interesting shops and food establishments to check out.
I popped in to Patisserie Salzburg today to get something sweet for the Mrs. They had a pretty smallish selection, something like 2 half empty cases so it made the selection process pretty easy. I went with the Napoleon pastry.
My chick had nothing but good things to say about her treat; "fresh, flaky and flavorful. Creamy center, and actual creme patisserie, not icing or custard. I'd expect something like this from a good European patisserie".
Job well done!
