Update: chicken pot pie was delicious enough to warrant a shoutout – the cheesy dough crust was out of this world! On the other hand, the grits were way off – highly disappointing.
I dropped in for a late night (well "late night" for midtown east) snack and a beer. I ordered the Calamari, which were prepared "Brooklyn style." Btw, what's Brooklyn style? Are Hipster calamaris going to infiltrate my plate and raise the price of the dish? When the dish came out, the marinara sauce was already on top of the calamari.*Yuck* I actually did not care for this, because I like to eat them without the sauce. Most places have the sauce on the side, so I did not think to ask for the sauce to be on the side or not included. Aside from the sauce faux pas, the meal was quite tasty because the calamari were lightly fried (not soak in old frying grease) and the size was decent for a starter plate.
If I am around the area, I will drop in for food, a beer, or one of The Smith's interesting cocktails.
I had brunch here with two of my best friends and it's easily in the top 3 best brunches I've ever had! The menu looked great so I booked a reservation and I was really glad I did because the wait would have been forever. We were immediately seated and greeted by a great waitress named Samantha.
Samantha took care of us the entire time and made some great cocktail and entree suggestions. I had the classic eggs benedict which was originally served beautifully but the eggs weren't actually poached but fully cooked through 🙁 However, Samantha immediately replaced the plate and her manager even came by to apologize. I certainly didn't expect this but the level of service really spoke volumes about the quality of this place! My new entree was served beautifully and perfectly poached! The hollandaise had a great kick of lemon and went really well with the grapefruit champagne cocktail I had ordered. We also ordered the avocado toast which was SO good. My friends ordered another version of the eggs benedict (a spicy take with pork instead of ham) and an omelette-scramble like dish. Everything was super flavorful and fresh, just like brunch should be served.
Our drinks were another amazing part of this meal. I ordered a bellini which was perfect and my friends ordered their signature drinks- passion punch and a bourbon based cocktail. The passion punch was SO good and the bourbon cocktail was very boozy but still pretty good. The drinks were included in our entrees (which weren't more than $20) so this was a steal!
I recommend this place to all my friends who visit New York because the ambiance was great in addition to the amazing food and service. Shout out to Samantha for being one of the best servers ever!
I was in New York for several days, ate at many restaurants, and The Smith was most definitely my favorite dining experience. In a city with infinite amounts of wonderful food – this speaks volumes.
The food was amazing. I had the shrimp and grits. It's not on the regular menu but it was a special for that Sunday. It was a bed of jalapeño cheese grits topped with shrimp, a chunky tomato sauce, two sunny side eggs, and a radish salad. The salad was more of a garnish than anything. The grits were perfect – thick and cheesy with a mild amount of heat. The shrimp were small but tender and well seasoned. The sauce was a nice addition but the sunny side eggs really set it over the top. Just an all around great dish. We also had a plate of biscuits. At first I was concerned because we didn't get any butter but they didn't need them. The biscuits were mounds of flaky, buttery, cheesy deliciousness.
A trend I found in New York was that sometimes the service was lacking – but not at The Smith. We were seated promptly and everyone was very kind and friendly. Our waitress was very accommodating and quick. She was patient as we were looking over the menu and she anticipated most all of our needs without us having to ask. The menu has so many great options. I will definitely revisit on my next trip to New York.
Nice atmosphere, good ambiance, great service, and the food was ok. I had the braised lamb shank tonight and I probably should have gone wth the steak. The lamb came off the bone easily but it wasn't tender and juicy. It was just ok. The shishito peppers were awesome. Old fashioned and beers were great too. Cool place for dinner with friends and great place to bring out of town guests.
Wow this space is huge and be restaurant was popping for 1 pm on a Friday. Luckily we were just a table of 2 so we got seated right away. I noticed that the noise level of the restaurant is very very high …
We had the pot of mussels which was extremely large. I recommend sharing between 2. We also got the burger royale which was surprisingly good too. Both came with an abundance of fries. Way too much if you ask me so we ended taking half of them to go. Food is great !!
Came here for lunch at 12pm on a Friday and was pleasantly surprised by the food !! I ordered the seared tuna salad, which tasted delicious and a good portion. The lobster roll stole the show !! Although a bit expensive ~30 bucks .. Super delicious and came with these spiced up potato chips !! We were feeling extra fancy and decided to order dessert… Was not that great I would just stick to lunch . We had the carrot cheesecake and the cheesecake part was still frozen when served to us. It was finally the normal temperature by the time we finished. All in all a good lunch during the work week in midtown east !
The place has that "power lunch" feel with its location and crowd during the week at 12:30pm. I had the following:
-Mediterranean Salad
-Brooklyn Blackout Cake
The salad was very good since it was a hearty portion of veggies and the chicken was grilled and well-seasoned. The cake was also delicious…good texture and chocolatey.
I'd definitely come back here!
