This Argentinian Steak House Restaurant is very small and I had a 20 minute wait before being seated and It was all worth it !!!
I ordered the Parillada and the Entrana ; a selection of grilled meats from skirt steak to blood sausages, grilled liver and grilled chicken breast. My sides included fried plantains, french fries and mashed potatoes.
Everything was grilled to a perfect temperature with and amazing grilled taste. I ordered a nice Cabernet Sauvignon to enjoy with all of my meat selection. Everything was exceptional from the service to the food .
So i decided to give this place a shot after trying out the other argentine establishment across the street. both are similar in terms of quality, however different things were better at each establishment.
I order the Parillada completa, which is a perfect introductory course to argentinian cusine. the sweetbreads, the intestines, the kidneys were done amazingly here, they were cleaned properly, tasted fresh, and did not leave too much of a barn yard presence in my mouth, the blood sausage was incredible flavorful and crumbled beautifully as i placed the perfectly held together pieces in my mouth. my only complaint here was the meat, as it tasted a little tough, and was not on par with what the establishment across the street was offering.
the offal meats and the sausages were remarkable here, the meat not so much
HANDS DOWN as a Yelp Elite which reviews a lot of places this is my favorite restaurant in all of NYC!
If I could rate this place 6 stars I would just for the food alone. Being Argentinean this place is the closest I feel like I am actually in Argentina without leaving Queens. I always bring my family and friends here whenever they visit. The hour subway ride and walk each way from Manhattan is totally worth every second.
I always order the entraña with chimichurri sauce. It's very delicious and large! Big enough to split with two people. The fries are crispy to taste and the mixed salad tops the meal off with a taste of freshness.
Don't forget to try it with a glass of Malbec!
The service itself is wonderful. Most of the customers are locals from the area. The ambiance of the restaurant is causal but yet romantic enough to bring friends, family, or a date. I went there on Valentine's Day and the place was packed! All tables are served for free freshly baked bread and an appetizer that includes salami, cheese, tomatoes and oil. Yes, please!
The walls are decorated with paintings and trinkets which makes you feel like you have been teleported to Buenos Aires.
Did I mention the best part of all? There is an actual butcher shop inside of the restaurant which serves cuts of Argentinean meat to the customers.
They also sell products from Argentina such as keychains, flags, mate gourds, alfajores, jerseys, jackets and more.
If your craving a good steak and want to try some affordable and tasty Argentinean food look no further than El Gauchito!
The free cheese and salami appetizer was great. Unfortunately, the combo suffered from undercooked skirt steak that was nowhere near the requested medium-well. The short rib and sausage fared better. The fries were of the Burger King variety.
I have been to this place when it was very small. However, i believed they made it bigger. The food is out of this world. Its in the heart of queens and its a charm. The meat is so flavorful and tender. I would recommend this place to all the meat lovers out there. I also recommend to make a reservation because it can get crowded at times.
I've generally ignored this place for years and opted to instead go across the street to La Esquina Criolla to get my Argentinian fix. But, we decided to try something new.
The space is small, but very cozy. The menu was beautifully illustrated. The waiters are all dressed in uniform which is a bit of a surprise to find on Corona Avenue. Like their neighbors across the street, they serve a wide variety of succulent, grilled meats like short ribs and skirt steak. However, the main difference between the two places is that here they also have a good number of seafood dishes. There were lots of appetizing pasta options available as well.
They started us off with some prosciutto and cheese, topped with a drizzle of olive oil and served alongside some crusty bread that comes from a bakery just across the street. Very savory.
We also tried their baked chicken empanadas. They were filled with diced red peppers, and surprisingly, very light.
We ordered shrimp and mussels provencal served with a rice and an order of grilled salmon. The mussels, while a bit salty for my taste were pretty good. The shrimp came in a limited supply but were also tasty.
I think the salmon was the best of our three entrees. It was char grilled to perfection, we all enjoyed it best.
For dessert, the three of us shared the churros casseros with dulce de leche. It looked amazing when it arrived at our table and tasted even better than it looked. Dusted with brown sugar and served with two dollops of fresh cream, really fabulous.
I enjoyed my meal at El Gauchito. Be forewarned: it can get pricey. But, there are a number of more economical dishes on the menu, so I wouldn't let it stop you from giving it a try. I'd recommend this place to friends, even if just for dessert.
