They Have Shuffleboard! With the rapidly declining shuffleboard scene in North Jersey, I have to shout that out when I find one.
I have been here a few times, and enjoyed my experience each time. The beer selection is great, and it is a lot of fun sampling their house made beers, along with their terrific other beers on tap. The bar food is good, I've had the Wurst Platter, Jambalaya, and some apps, and everything has been tasty. My only complaint is that they are a bit pricey for both the beer and food.
The bartenders have always been friendly and attentive. When we have had table service, it has been a tad on the slow side.
I think Gaslight is fun and worth a trip. I'll be back.
I had been here once before, but just for the drinking-I didn't even realize that they had a back room. It is like two different atmospheres, the lively, dimly-lit bar with great bartenders and a plethora of good brews, and the very bright, sort of old-fashioned dining area in the back. Our server was very knowledgeable of all of the beers and brought us samples, which is always appreciated when you are trying to be adventurous at a brewery. We were a party of four and we went with two apps, the mussels and the garlic shrimp. I'm not one for mussels but they were gone almost as quickly as they were placed. The garlic shrimp accompanied by the garlic toast was excellent. Can you tell I like garlic?!?! I went with the appetizer portion of BBQ chicken quesadilla which was HUGE-I couldn't even finish it. I shared it. Couldn't imagine what the dinner price was. The boys went with ribeye steak sandwiches, which they also made 2 meals out of. The other person in our party went with a scallops dish which was presented well and she looked happy! The beers were good, the service was great, and the company was excellent. The price was good and the portions were large. Not some place I would go every Friday, Cheers style, but looking forward to trying more of the beers. I have been warned to avoid the owners however, which apparently is a sentiment shared by many yelpers.
Very nice brewery and the stout I had was good. The decor was very nice. I would go back.
A nice large brewpub on the main street of South Orange with a nice beer menu of brews that were brewed on premises and a huge food menu. The bar is pretty big and there is a surprising amount of seating in the back. The beer is all made in the restaurant. The list is a traditional range from pale ale and pilsner to stouts. The Belgian style ale was tasty, with a strong clove flavor exemplifying the style well. It could have been served a bit colder though. The food menu is pretty huge and varied, including several sandwiches, burgers, and some random tex-mex. The burgers even have options like bison and antelope. I took the middle route and tried the bison burger which was deliciously tender and had a great balance of fat and lean. The service was a bit slow, but did check up pretty frequently. Great place for some good beer and strong pub food in South Orange.
From college to now I love the Gas Light. Fantastic home brews, great food, relaxed atmosphere, good service, and shuffleboard. Cha ching!
The restaurant / bar is split into three main areas. Upon entering there is the bar. It's huge with ample seating along three sides. Bartenders are whipping out drinks quickly while making recommendations and giving tastes as you try to find your perfect beverage. Off to the right there's a "bar dining" area with high top tables, shuffleboard (and maybe darts? I can't remember). It can fit 15 people easily enough, and is where to be when you're going out but don't actually want to sit at the bar.
Toward the back is the dining room. A full menu is offered, but save your time and just order the hobgobbler. Thanksgiving on a sandwich… 'nuff said. Waffle fries are also HIGHLY encouraged. They're the best I've ever had.
There are some "main stream" beers, but really you should look at the two blackboards before you order. One is a list of the home brews, the other is the "visitors". This is where I tried my first Lambic – framboise to be precise. I tried the Enkel Biter yesterday which was a Trappist style single and very easy to drink. They have a quadrupel currently that my friend loved. Don't be afraid to ask about sizing – they offer 1/3 liter (or pint? Think the size of the smaller Chimay glass) servings for the heavy ABV beverages.
Lunch, dinner, drinks, fun or low key hanging out all works well at the Gas Light.
UPDATE. This place has good beer but the worst service I didn't believe it many Yelp reviews saying it but it is the truth. They just do not care about it. Bartender Jeff is the worst one and is an ass H*ole. My burger was overcooked and my bun was burnt he asked me how it was I told him those were the problems and he turned around nothing more said except the 0 tip for that douchebag come here for beers and no good service. I guess they like working for the minimum because that's the service they give. Like you are doing then a favor by spending your money there. LOSERS
Even one of the owners told me to watch out for Jeff because he's rough around the edges well then guess what fire that douchebag and get somebody who cares and respects your customers unless you don't.
Plus I'm the unfortunate DUKE of this place.
I came here back in September for a happy hour and it was an okay place overall. The service was fine (I had read that it can be iffy, but I had no problems) and our drinks were served promptly. The bar food was cheap and tasty and I would order it again, but the beer here is definitely a disappointment; I tried a few in a flight and all of them tasted watered-down and not worth the money. It's a decent spot to come grab a few drinks and have some snacks, but I would avoid the beers they brew.
Came here for a late night dinner with the bf because we were at an event earlier in West Orange. Wanted to watch the TNF game so we sat at the bar. The bar was almost full but the rest of the restaurant was pretty empty. Service was pretty good – bartender was attentive when he needed to be and was not overbearing at all. Food came out pretty quick.
They have a decent selection of beers and a huge menu. I got the nachos and the bf got the BBQ quesadillas (dinner portion with pulled pork). All I can say is wow they are generous with the portion sizes here. I did not expect the nachos to be that big, neither did the bf. When I only ordered the nachos as my meal, he was even like, "That's all you're going to order?". Well good thing that was the only thing I ordered, because I couldn't finish it! He couldn't finish his quesadillas either (dinner portion is 2x bigger than the appetizer). If you are thinking of ordering them, I highly suggest sticking to the appetizer portion. The nachos were decent and quesadillas had a good amount of meat. However, it was a bit difficult to eat the quesadillas because it was kind of soggy.. the cheese it in was more like cheese whiz than actual cheese so the quesadilla did not stay together well. Overall, mediocre food.. nothing special.. but the prices are pretty reasonable.
Would I come back? Probably not unless I was in the area. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. However, not bad for a quick bite and if you like craft beers.
