3.5 stars. A work assignment brought me to Flatlands (an area of Brooklyn I never might have been to otherwise!); and a tip from a coworker brought me to Topaze for lunch (a restaurant I never might have checked out due to its 1 terrible Yelp review).
Upon entering, I was happy I took his recommendation. The steam counter had plenty of Caribbean staples to choose from like curry goat, stewed beef, jerk chicken, and oxtail! The soup of the day was goat head soup!
I filled my plate with stewed chicken, rice & beans, and carrot & raisin salad. The total came to $8, and it came with a free fountain soda. A reasonable price for a delicious meal!
The reason why I can't bump this review up to 4 stars is because the portion was a BIT small. I felt satisfied when I was done eating, but as soon as I got back to the office… I felt peckish. Nevertheless, Topaze deserves a higher rating, and I wouldn't hesitate to come back the next time I'm in the area!
I don't think I would have ever ventured into Topaze if it wasn't recommended by by coworkers who worked around the area and I was really craving for some good Caribbean food!
I can't say if parking is bad or not due to the fact that I was able to land a parking spot right in front of the restaurant at 11:15am so it might swing either way.
We walked in at around 11ish and they were still cooking most of their food in the back. Both of my coworkers ordered chicken (one Jerk and one Stewed) and guess what I ordered? of course- OXTAIL, you don't need to tell me twice!
The oxtail here is so good! right off the bone good!! the sauce is on point and I got mine with rice and beans and some pickled carrot, YUM! I had a taste of the stewed chicken from my coworker and it is also very tasted, they definitely put in the time to marinate the chicken and the oxtail properly! The meal also came with a free fountain soda so that was definitely a big +
Price: above average: considering the portion of the oxtail I got, it was definitely on the pricier side. I got about 6-7 good pieces of small oxtail, with rice and beans and that pickled carrot- came out to be $10
Overall: I enjoyed my meal at Topaze, although their portions are on the smaller end but they made up for it with big flavor and taste in their food. The people there are always smiling and made us feel welcomed! If opportunity arises, I will definitely be back for more oxtail!!
