“We then shared the ropa vieja as the main dish – which was great, but a little salty (as expected, it's Cuban food, right?)”
“The menu inside of the cigar box was very creative and absolutely unique.”

I came here for drinks since I been wanting to check this place out. I wasn't really hungry so I only got an appetizer (coconut shrimp) and it was a very large portion and delicious. It came with this green cilantro sauce that made it the shrimp taste even better.
I got to try the sanjitos which is something I had never heard of, its a combination of sangria and a mojito. They had two versions of it, one with red and the other with white sangria. I got to taste both and I couldn't make up my mind which one I liked better since they were both delicious.
After the Sanjitos I asked to see the drink menu and I was pleasantly surprised when the bartender handed me a bottle of wine, yes the drink menu is printed on a bottle of wine which I thought was a very clever idea.
They had good selections of wine by the glass.
I will for sure come back to have more sanjitos and try more dishes from their menu.
Came for brunch with the girls. To start the red sangria is the best I've had in a long time. 3 of us decided on the ( El Socio) skirt steak and eggs for our meal. I didn't like the cut- rubbery and fatty. The eggs were ok, rice- good. My gf had (Desayuna Guajira) great presentation ( see pic) but that was all. She described it as oily yuca with no chorizo and BLAH. Not being one to complain we let it go- turned off by the mgr who refused to serve my last request of sangria – I wanted to try the white but was told we exceeded out 1.5 hr limit. It's a slow Sunday- it's a new place and that's how you treat customers? Nice.
Great server though!
Really wanted to like this place but the dishes are expensive and having lived in Miami the quality isn't as good.
Glad I came but I don't know if I will be back. It was basic at best.. Yes, the ambience of the restaurant is very intimate, cutely decorated, dimly lit setting the tone for a date or whatever .. But you can't eat the atmosphere can you… So we walk in and we wanted to sit at the bar so I ask if we can sit there and the guy working basically takes like ten seconds to answer us and I guess he didn't want us sitting there then he extends into his response to "well I just cleaned it" no shit ass hat that's what u do in a restaurant.. Anyway, I wasn't having him irritate me any further but oh he did succeed.. We wanted to sit at a 4 person table… Mind you the place is empty with like one smaller party there but other than that just my fiancé and myself were in there… He's a bit tall and we like space for plates on our table .. Guy working tells us oh sit there at the tiny two person table like..
How annoying are you…
Didn't even want to eat at this point bc the server put a bad taste in my mouth but we ordered the chicharrones and the cubanita (mini Cuban sandwich )… BASIC. Chicharrones were bland as shit and tasted like they were from the freezer .. Not authentic at all.. I've had way better chicharrones elsewhere.. And the Cuban sandwich was Eh.. Tasted better than the chicken that's for sure but it was burned like how do you ever serve that… Didn't these guys see the movie Chef? Obv not lol.. Ok I'm done.. I don't recommend it but if you want to try it maybe you will have a better experience than my fiancé and I did .
I came here for a friend's birthday dinner. Upon entering, it was a narrow and small venue. Minimalistic decor but very warm ambience. For some reason, this place didn't come off as though it would be any good but I was pleasantly surprised. Aside from the menu's arriving to us in a cigar like box, the appetizers and entrees were phenomenal. The flavors were on point, nothing was too salty and the entrana that I ordered was very tasty. However, they have a limited drink menu (sangrias, wine and beer) but overall very good. The prices were decent for good Cuban food. I would definitely come back again for dinner or a booze brunch.
Was searching for new spots in Astoria to dine with my friend Andrea G. so we stopped by Sabor De Cuba after I saw all the great reviews. As we walked in, the server asked if we had reservations and my friend answered no so he looked at the back then at us and pointed to the first table behind the front door. Thank god less cold draft from the constant door opening.
My friend already knew that she was going to get the Camarones Al Ajillo so I was thinking about tapas vs. entree. My friend ordered a Red Sangria then I switched over to look at the drink menu and saw the Sanjitos (wooooo sangria mojito that's pretty cool)…::sad face:: they ran out of it so I got the Passion Fruit Sangria! I asked our server Marco which was better Pernil or Vaca Frita so he told me to get the Pernil okie dokie. We got a Yuca Frita to share. I definitely love the Passion Fruit Sangria as its quite light and not too overpowering from the wine topped with red/green apples and orange peels.
We were getting so hungry as the kitchen was pumping out food for the nearby tables. When our dishes comes to the table, I was like damn my dish is freaking huge. Good thing there was rice and black beans to go along with my dish. The Yuca Frita was crispy and yummy. My friend really enjoyed her dish even though the portion was small. I probably took a few bites of my Pernil but wanted to save room for dessert so one of the servers put my leftovers in a container for me to take home.
Since we are sharing dessert, I know my friend isn't a fan of Flan so our eyes were fixated on the last choice of Tres Leches. When Marco brought out the dessert, I noticed right away that there were coconut flakes all over the cake and plate. I told him that I was allergic to coconut and he offered to see if they have one without coconut so he took the slice back to the kitchen. Unfortunately all the ingredients is made with coconut #bummer. My friend got a new slice of the Tres Leches and some parts of the cake wasn't completely soaked in the delicious leche but she still enjoyed it. I went with my love of flans and this was a Passion Fruit flavor mmmmm…so delicious after each bite!
Definitely a must try for authentic Cuban food and excellent service from Marco!
I have found my new favorite Cuban restaurant! Service is so important to me so when I called on a WEDNESDAY asking if they could possibly take me and my party of FIFTEEN for my boyfriends FRIDAY birthday celebration and they said yes? I was over the moon! This place is on the smaller side guys- so I was ready to hear a no.
I called the day of to ask if adding two more would be possible and they had no issues. I also asked if I could stop in with some balloons a few hours before the reservation and they were so kind when I did, confirming my decision to go with Sabor De Cuba.
The party dwindled in slowly, but everyone started ordering drinks and a few appetizers. Everyone was there by 8PM and we ordered our entrees. The restaurant had another party of about 10, our party of 17 and were able to fit about 5 more 4 tops so the place was packed but they performed swift and professionally. The menus are awesome here! Won't tell you why, but you'll see when you visit.
Menu Favorites:
-Strawberry Margarita
-Passion Fruit Mojito (they also have PF Sangria!)
-Chicken Empanadas
-Churrasco with Chimichurri
-Camarones al ajillo (shrimp in a garlic sauce)
I originally had a reservation at a popular Cuban restaurant in LIC that used to be my favorite. We would visit at least once a month and recommend people to them. They decided to not accommodate my reservation two days before because we added three people. It's amazing that Sabor, a smaller restaurant was able to not only accommodate us last minute but did so with class and made our night amazing. Everything happens for a reason and now I have found the true Cuban Jem in Astoria.
