Hub loves the W&D truck! He insisted that I try one when the truck stopped by in the city. We shared the de throwdown wafel known as the legendary wafel (choice of brussels or liege wafel) with spekuloos spread, whipped cream, & powder sugar that beat Bobby Flay. Yum!! I know why they won the throw down! Not sure what the spekuloos condiment contains but I'll take a stab at its secret ingredients. My guess would be along the lines of gingerbread & caramel sauce with a peanut butter texture. My brother had the liege wafel with nutella and walnuts. The liege is the true Belgian wafel, no wonder my husband insisted that I get the liege over the brussels wafel. The first dinges (topping) is free, any additional will cost $1 or pile on all the unlimited dinges- WMD (wafel of massive deliciousness) for $2. The gals who took our orders even entertained us for a bit when their generator broke down on the truck. They promised W&D will be getting sexier with the tunes of Barry White. Gotta love em'!
This place is SOOO GOOD! I loved it! I've always heard people talking about it and mentioning that every waffle lover had to try it, but when I tried to taste one during the Christmas markets season, the lines made it impossible to get one. I was coming home late one night after a Nets game when I saw this truck parked out in front of the Broadway stop in Astoria. I didn't have anything to eat at the Barclays Center because the food was so expensive, but I didn't have dinner so I decided to have a try.
There were a couple other people in line at around 9PM on a Sunday evening, which says a lot about a waffle truck. The descriptions for the waffles were pretty entertaining and I got a kick out of just how suave the whole enterprise seemed. Had a little trouble understanding the menu at first (I saw that it said Dinges for $1 and got super excited because I thought it meant that a waffle was only a buck).
I really was starving for dinner so I wanted to order a BBQ Pork Waffle, but I thought I would go the safer route since I never had it before. I went for one of their specials, the El Churro Waffle, and I was not disappointed! I had it put in a to-go box and I brought around the corner to my apartment to eat. It isn't very big, but the flavors were wonderful. It was topped with dulce de leche, brown cinammon sugar, and some powdered sugar. The waffle itself was very soft yet firm, so it still had a nice crunch to it, but it didn't shatter and get the powdered sugar everywhere.
All in all, I think it's a pretty good deal, though for $6 I think it could have been bigger. But hey, it's NYC, I guess that should be a standard.
Waffles and Dingis? Dinjis? How on earth to you pronounce Dinges? And that was how I approached this truck. The guys are the truck were friendly, informative, and funny. I was so full but was able to take a bite of a mini wafelini with spekuloos and strawberries. Spekuloos taste like graham cracker peanut butter, but there's no peanut butter. While it's their favorite spread, I probably would have preferred the chocolate fudge or whipped cream.
I love gourmet food trucks! I want to try the savory wafels next time!
