I love having a wine bar so close to home…and the wine is even reasonable priced. You can get a glass for under $10. And a reasonable bottle for around $35 (which is recommended if you're going to dinner with a friend.
I've been here twice now and have yet to be disappointed by the food here. All of it is delicious! So, let's break it down:
First time:
SLOW ROASTED BRANZINO WITH LEMON GARLIC CAULIFLOWER – delicious
SEARED SALMON, ROASTED CARROTS, PARSNIP PUREE & POTATO CRISPS – delicious, loved the waffle potato crisps, roasted carrots were nice and sweet and al dente
Second time:
DRUNKIN BABY RIBS, MASHED POTATOES & MARKET GREENS – if you don't want to use your hands, you don't have to (the ribs come off the bone quite easily with a knife and fork. The potatoes are delicious…the arugula salad helps to lighten up the meal, delicious subtle sauce. You get like 6-ish ribs, which is a perfect amount
BRUSCHETTA BAR (OLIVE TAPENADE, CHIPOTLE STEAK, CREAMY GOAT CHEESE & BALSAMIC PEAR – best idea EVER! I don't think you can really go wrong with any of the choices. the olive tapenade was olive tapenade, but a little too subdued for my taste. the chipotle steak was amazing! the goat cheese pear was delicious, creamy and light…they give you lots of cheese and I love goat cheese
This place is delicious.
Came here for happy hour, but don't drink the happy hour wine- splurge for the good stuff. I had a Malbec that was perfect. And the steak bruschetta and pumpkin ravioli put me in a great place. While I sat at the bar, reading a book, and sipping from my glass, the bartenders were friendly and professional, and there are a dedicated stream of locals and regulars– it's obvious why. Neighborhood gem.
Obviously I need to get out more because the last time I ate in this space it was a juice place. Was here on a Monday night it was super mellow. Liked my salmon burger (I actually took the bun home) I ordered a side of spinach which did not arrive, reminded the server and got it free of charge. The bathroom is kind of small and dingy.
Oak is really a bar shorehorned into a restaurant with a small stove in the back. Literally the entire kitchen is just the back of the bar.
With that said, the ribs that I had were pretty good. The sauce was a little salty for my taste, and when the bartender found out he offered to make me something else. I politely declined since they were still quite good. Meat was tender and was easy to pick off the bone.
Oak has a lot of charm. I'd recommend this as a date place, and it seems like couples already figured that out. There were 2 couples next to me on the bar. Also, bonus points for having a legitimate bar where people can sit and eat a full meal.
Went here for V-Day and ordered the prix fixe menu which consisted of the following aps: beet soup (pass), cerviche (good), arugula with cheese and toast (good), scallops (pass). The best part were the entrees as the veal was spectacular and tasted like steak and the lobster ravioli was good. The desserts which were green tea cheesecake tasted flavorless and dry while the molten chocolate cake was very rich and the cream (forgot the name) wasn't bad.
This place is really cool.
I've been living in this neighborhood for a year now and always saw this place on yelp but never tried it. Last Sunday I wanted to eat outside with one of my roommate and couldn't decide of which place to go ( oak or Northbell) . Finally from the pictures on yelp, we decided to go to Oak. We share the
This place is FANTASTIC.
My friend brought me here for some catching up in the neighborhood. Small, quaint little place. The bruchetta bar is amazing. If you're a fan of goat cheese, you MUST get the goat cheese and balsamic one. The ricotta bruchetta is also great. Artichoke salsa one was good, but my least favorite of all I've tried there. The pumpkin ravioli is to die for, and my friend got the salmon burger with salad (which was lightly dressed, much appreciated). The dessert is superb (molten cake, anyone?) and they do an awesome "sampler" dessert plate with mini versions of three of the desserts. The wine selection is, of course, great (pro-tip: try the malbec!). It's a bit on the small side of restaurants, so definitely make a reservation. Great for a date night.
I enjoyed my dinner here. I dined alone so only tried an appetizer and cheese plate. The caramelized carrot appetizer was interesting – carrots and marscapone cheese with granola. The carrots needed a bit more salt and sweet and I might have chosen walnuts rather than granola. But it was different and I enjoyed it. I followed with a plate of speck, manchego and candied bacon. This was a huge portion and came with a surprise guava paste and cornichons. Again I enjoyed it a lot. Now for my rating. I would love to give 3 1/2 stars but…yelp! So the extra 1/2 star is for service. My waiter was friendly, attentive and good at his job.
