We had the duck tacos, tuna tartare w/ guacamole, crab shumai, house dumplings, longevity noodles, chicken satays, and red snapper. Duck tacos had way too much citrus on them, and I could barely taste the meat. Tuna tartare had too much wasabi and burned our mouths, though we could cancel it out with the superb guacamole and seaweed cracks. Crab shumai was a con — pretty sure they got these out of a microwave bag. (Ever go to actual dim sum in Chinatown? Then you know what shumai is supposed to look at). Chicken satays and noodles were absolutely delicious, though, along with the red snapper. We also ordered a flourless chocolate cake, but it ended up looking more like half a brownie, not a real slice.
Why only 2 stars (rather than the 3 I'd give for the uneven food)? Service was definitely not great. Food brought out before water, third drink took a long time to come out, etc. Overall, it's a bust.
4.5 Stars rounded up, best dinner I've had in awhile. We were served by the manager Bo, he's extremely polite, three of us walked in at 7 into this modern, oriental but chic restaurant divided by wooden strip walls, the booths are huge and very comfortable. We were greeted by the sweetest waitress ever, and she offered me hot tea to start off the night.
My coworker and I had red wine while our friend had white, the guacamole in an avocado AND spicy tuna tartar is to die for, the tempura seaweed actually goes well with the dippings, it's crispy and left a nice numbing but cooling sensation in my mouth.
The yellowtail with mango salad and a jalapeno on it, yum!
The sashimi platter featured blue fin tuna, Alaskan king crab legs, otoro, salmon and yellowtail, very fresh and nice display. I loved how Bo refused to serve me uni because it's from Maine and not the best they had that night.
The handshook beef cubes, so tender and sweet, juicy and flavorful, how did they do that!!?
We had lobster potstickers, like, I'd never even order these at an Asian fusion restaurant but these were so tasty, with meat AND lobster inside, the bottom is crispy while the skin on top made them look like steamed gyoza, they offered 3 sauces, garlic, spicy and soy. Perfect!
Those pork tacos were ok, I took one bite to taste, but the rest of the meal took away the attention.
At the end we had grilled curry giant prawns, a bit heavier than I'd liked, but still the flavors really made their way into the shrimp meat.
The desserts are to die for, that creme brulee, how come I didn't try it earlier, oh that saseme icecream is like what they serve at Cha-an, but the brownie straight up melted in my mouth. It was a clean kind of sweet, not overwhelming, and didn't taste like a pint of sugar worked into it.
Overall great experience! I will be bringing friends.
I always like to make reservations especially for tonight's occasion…my friend Andrea G.'s pre-birthday dinner. We walked over from my office on 5th Ave and arrived at 6:15pm (way too early for my 6:45pm reservation). Luckily the hostess was able to seat us in our very own red cushioned booth. I had to take pictures because I like my tushy to be comfortable when eating yummy food. Okay enough about me 🙂
The decor was just so beautiful with all the half red booths throughout the restaurant. Good thing this was the birthday girl's top pick and finally we popped our cherries!
Starters: dim sum sampler (mushroom dumpling, crab shumai, charsui duck bun) along with three dipping sauces …I tried the crab shumai very yummy and ate both of the buns as the duck meat was very moist and delicious…mmmmm! Since the birthday girl is a vegetarian, she wasn't able to try the duck buns but I gave her my mushroom dumpling as I am not a big fan of it. She did try only the Mantou that wasn't touching the duck meat.
Entrees: shrimp pad thai (the birthday girl)…Andrea G. really enjoyed her pad thai but I can't try hers because its loaded with peanuts visually on the side of her bowl before she mixed it in.
oink oink oink fried rice (my order)…I have been eyeing on the oink oink oink fried rice and seen many pictures of it. I knew I was making the right choice after our server, Yenny was describing the fried rice to me. Every bite of the fried rice left my palate in a WOW factor "mama love you"! I wanted to save some room for dessert and doggy bag my leftovers.
Dessert: ginger crème brulee (the birthday's girl pick)…I glanced at the dish and realized the crème brulee was surrounded by toasted coconut flakes which is one of my food allergies and my friend feel bad. I didn't want her to ask for another one because this is her special pre-birthday night. After my friend spoons up her first bite, I got a scoop and I can taste the ginger flavor so yummy!
Definitely an amazing time here tonight with delicious food in our bellies and we were done exactly an hour lol
My boyfriend and I live across the street so when we want a quick bite without going far, we can always count on Sachi. Service is always fast, ambiance is nice, food is consistently good and the price is right. I only took away a star because their menu is a bit limited and they are not always willing to make modifications.
The dumplings were great. The duck ramen was so NOT great. Super bland. The service is what gets this place the third star – staff is friendly and helpful.
Sachi Asian Bistro is truly Asian fusion. They offer a good variety of cuisines and mix-and-match options. The venue is nice, there are good specials, and food is generally decent. Lunch hours can be pretty hectic, so service can be spotty.
I organized an analyst dinner/holiday party here a few weeks ago, and easily made a reservation on Opentable. In hindsight, I wish I had asked around more for rooms or circular tables, as they seated us at a long rectangular table–nothing wrong with that and the reservation went smoothly enough, but it was really hard talking to people. Probably stick with groups of 5-6 max, if you want to be seated at a nice booth and be able to talk to everyone.
We were pretty late for our reservation (people kept coming in an hour or two after our reservation had started), and the service was very patient and phenomenal. However, there was some mix-up, as I had asked about drink discounts for such a big group (usually some places throw in a happy hour special or a free round of shots when celebrating something), and the lady on the phone had agreed to give us happy hour specials as we would be arriving only a half hour after happy hour would end. When we got there, I had to explain to the manager what happened, and he finally did give us a small discount on one round of wine/beer. Nothing to get us crazy about.
The food came quickly, and again, the service PHENOMENAL. Unfortunately, my oink oink fried rice, which everyone raved about on yelp, was very mediocre–almost too salty to eat, even. I didn't try others' dishes, but they looked beautifully presented–not sure about how they tasted, though.
Overall, it was a fine holiday party. I think it ended up being more of a formal dinner though…which was fine. Sachi is a little out of the way (far from any trains, really) to warrant coming again, though.
Must try:
Mushroom spring rolls
Mango lobster roll (it was the special of the day, they might have it again)
Creme brûlée
This restaurant has a great design and really good food. The only issue was the service. It's very slow. Annoyingly slow.
