Cafe Batata

“My favorite is the "mignon champignon" — filet mignon and mushrooms with an incredible dijon mustard sauce.”

“Delicious food that is unique to the area, the nicest staff, laid back environment, that happens to be BYOB, can't really ask for more.”

“We also picked up a couple coxinha's and a couple desserts to go that served as a great snack for later.”

  1. A very welcome addition to the neighborhood.

Cafe Batata doesn't have an extensive menu, with the feature being batata suica, a huge round of shredded potato, stuffed with meats/cheese/veggies, and fried to crispy goodness. I went with the chicken & cheese (think: big latke stuffed with cream cheese and shredded chicken. yum) and a side of onion salad. A bit greasy, but delicious. The mustard-and-pepper infused onion salad provided enough of a contrast to cut through the grease.

The food is great, the staff is friendly, and they're open reasonably late. It doesn't come cheap, but it's well worth the search.

  2. Cafe Batata is a quaint location that sells Brazilian cuisine. My boyfriend and I ordered the Mignon Champignon to split. It was about $16 with tax. The potato pancake is pan fried and stuffed with filet mignon, mushroom and tomato and Dijon mustard cream sauce. Although I really liked the taste I think the filet mignon was pretty minimal. It was also in so much sauce that you couldn't really taste the steak. Although I would say that is my complaint the overall taste was really good and the meat quality seemed great. The restaurant space is very open and they have seating at the windows which can be opened. Great place to stop at on a beautiful day for that reason. The woman working at the counter was really friendly. I will definitely come back to try more options.

  3. Cafe Batata is situated on a small side street, and when we went during the day on a Sunday it was fairly empty. The owners are really friendly and engaging, and are more than happy to walk you through the different batata suica options on the menu.

So far have had their salmon, chicken & cream cheese, spinach, and mignon champignon. I'd say thus far the mignon is my favorite. I've never quite had anything like these before, and this might not do them justice, but the best I can describe these things are the best parts of a homemade hash brown stuffed with meaty goodness. Make no mistake – this is pretty heavy food, but if you get the Brazilian onion salad it definitely helps to cut the richness.

Great coffee here, as well. Wish it was in a more visible location so more people would get the chance to try it out.

  4. Happy to have this place in the neighborhood. Definitely a unique option!

I tried the batata suica which I'd never heard of before. It's like a big hash brown with filling. I tried the mignon champignon – yum. Also tried the shrimp croquette – delicious. Oh and the oven baked cheese bread – that was good too. Had the passion fruit mousse for dessert – pretty good but not amazing.

They deliver too! Delicious, unique food – can't go wrong.
