How on earth have I never been here? Boy was the place bustling with a crowd during a weekday lunch time rush! And for good reason!
Luckily, they have such a system in place and quick service that you shouldn't ever have to wait more than a few minutes. We dined in the back of the restaurant where there is waiter service.
I ordered what was recommended to me by a foodie I trust dearly, and had the classic Cubano sandwich, twisted style, which adds plantains & Sophie's famous green sauce. Oh my goodness, everything about this sandwich was just right, the flavors, the meats, the sweetness of the plantains and the kick from the green sauce. Oh and the price is right at $9 + $1 for twisted.
This sure did put me in a nice food coma for the rest of the day, but it was worth it! This place is nothing fancy, but such a great & quick spot for a lunch break. Can't wait to return!
The layout is similar to what you expect to find in a Spanish food take out place. But make no mistake, it is dine in as well. The space is narrow in the front but wider towards the back; kind of like your favorite hip-hop/rap music video chick.
Everyday they have the special of the day which adds variety to your daily lunch if you eat often. If I worked closer, I'd probably would.
I ordered the turkey Cuban which was exactly the way I like my Cubans, equal balance of saltiness/savory/crunch. For drinks, I ordered the guanabana smoothie. It was smooth with a mild taste of sweetness. Really good stuff.
Service was friendly.
FAN.
Love having lunch at Sophie's. My plate of roast pork with rice and beans was delicious. Love sitting down and enjoying an unlimited amount of the killer green sauce. Service was fast and friendly on the lunch hour.
Sophie's is old reliable when it comes to Midtown lunch Cuban food. I used to go to their Murray Hill location back when the chain had a different name and I've found all of the outposts to be pretty good.
The line moves relentlessly so don't even think about taking your sweet time prancing around, perusing the options. Just grab a tray and move through the stations, gathering gems such as roast pork, pernil, Cuban seafood, or one of their many daily specials.
It's a cafeteria ambiance, but great for casual lunching with your work mates. And that green sauce is crack as you may know.
UPDATE: Please note there's table service in the back, so despite what my review indicated, you can stay for a more relaxed lunch.
WOWOWOWOWWW. Wow.
I'm so glad I found this spot via Yelp when searching restaurants near where I was located. My boyfriend and I ordered
1) The Cuban (sandwich): my boyfriend bit into it first and his face dropped in awe and he started frantically pointing his finger to the other half to motion me to take a bite. I would be omitting a crucial part in my attempt to tell you how great this dish was if I didn't tell you that almost immediately after (I rolled my eyes) and I asked "How could could a sandwich be?" With so many doubts, I bit into the sandwich and wow. The melted cheese in combination with the very tender meat was incredible. (I then reacted the same exact way that he did).
2) Spicy Grilled Chicken (w/ rice & fried sweet plantains): with the price that is put on this plate- what a steal! It is super filling. I packed more than half of my dish. The flavor is very rich and savory and the rice was cooked perfectly.
3) GREEN SAUCE GREEN SAUCE. I know everyone's been raving about it and now I know why.. so I'm obligated to rave about it as well and make it its own dish. I kept dipping my fork into the pool of sauce I had. Couldn't get enough.
I'm a big fan of Sophie's, but I was a bit disappointed with this location. I recently came here to get lunch to-go and it was probably the most hectic and rushed experience of my life (although all lunch spots in Midtown are like this to keep lines moving fast). I think I was in and out within 5 minutes despite how long the line was. For that reason, definitely make sure you know what you want before you enter. All their entrees come with 2 sides, which is pretty generous since most plates are under $12. I opted for the roast pork with yellow rice and steamed vegetables. I'm not sure if they were having an off day but the rice and pork were extremely salty and greasy. It was frustrating because the meat was tender and the flavors were amazing as they always are but everything was overpowered by all the salt. The veggies were average, but they balanced out the overseasoned pork and rice. On the upside, I am glad they give you little cups of their signature green sauce with your order because it is amazing and absolutely a necessity to any meal at Sophie's. Overall, I haven't lost faith in the Sophie's franchise but I would probably only dine-in and visit other locations in the future.
I love this place and have been going for the oxtail and empanadas for many years. I came to this location tonight with my brothers for dinner. We had a super friendly waitress and put in orders for salmon. Unfortunately they were out of salmon. We ended up leaving bc they were out of a couple things we wanted but still love this place. To their the food is always fresh and the menu indicates that they only purchase small quantities of items in order to keep a fresh supply. While it was disappointing to not be able to get dinner here to night…the fact that they were oit of the salmon i saw a couple other people eating (loooked sooooo yumm) is a testament to the freshness of their food and the statement on the menu. Also…loooobe the green sauce.
Will try to make it to one of the locations soon.
Sophie's is my go-to spot for lunch and sometimes picking up for dinner. I have had their food countless times, and every single time their food is on point. I'm not sure how they do it, but they get it done. Considering they are a franchise, they keep their food authentic and true to their origins.
My 2 favorites always are the pernil (roast pork) and the pollo empanizado (breaded chicken) with moro (rice mixed with beans) and maduros. They also have really good empanadas. And please do not forget to add some spice to your food by asking for the GREEN SAUCE (you will thank me later or it). Not sure what's in it, but it's hella good.
Go ahead and explore the amazingness of Sophie's.
