From top to bottom, everything I ate was delicious. Luckily I was here with a large group, and we were able to sample a variety of Chop Shop II's tasty offerings.
Apps: Steamed pork buns, pan fried veggie dumplings, spring rolls and a plate of drunken noodles to share. Loved it all, but the buns were definitely standout. They usually are, so no surprise there! I also surprisingly liked the drunken noodle. Usually this dish is too spicy for me, but this had just the right amount of kick without being too harsh.
Main: Crab fried rice. Can this be my last meal on earth? This was seriously some of the best crab fried rice I've had, with a very generous portion of crab meat in the dish. There were also a few platters of sautéed veggies floating around the table and I was really digging the eggplant.
Sake: Lot's of it. I normally don't love the taste of sake, but whatever we had went down really smooth.
The vibe is dark and cozy and the service is super amicable. Big bonus is that unlike some other pretty teeny places, they take reservations for a large party. They do offer a price fixe option for groups larger than 8, but we decided to just order on our own.
Because this is close to my office and the path, I definitely hope to be back again soon!
This is goof solid food, with service to match. I came in here a few times for lunch and enjoyed my food very much.
I ordered the chicken pai tai everytime, because I am a creature of habit and when I find something I like I stick with it!
Any who you get the point, nice food, nice service, great stop if you are in the Flatiorn District.
I'll admit it: I was extremely wary when we walked into this place. In my experience, restaurants that serve multiple types of Asian cuisine are uniformly terrible. However, I'm always wrong, and I was wrong about Chop Shop.
There was a big group of us, so we ordered just about everything on the menu, and I was pleasantly shocked by the quality. The pork buns, the spicy peanut noodles, dumplings of all kinds…the meal started out quite nicely. I particularly enjoyed the glazed eggplant and the spicy cucumber salad, as well as the risotto (a traditional Asian dish, as I'm sure you know).
But I have to say that I'm all about the sweet and spicy Szechuan orange beef. I don't know when I stopped ordering Orange Beef from Chinese restaurants, but I want to go back and smack that younger, stupider me. Then again, I doubt crappy takeout places come anywhere near the careful execution and depth of flavor that I got here.
So if I have two pieces of advice:
1. Don't ever listen to me.
2. Orange Beef. Do it.
You're probably all conflicted now. Well, I don't care.
Didn't really get a sense of any real "fusion-y" flavors. Conversely, the Chinese dishes that we had were really well-done versions of the originals- only slightly modified to give them more mass appeal. Same with the Thai dishes.
We had the pork buns which we really need to stop ordering because it never really stands out anymore (and this one didn't). The best dishes we had were the 3-cups chicken and the spicy drunken noodles which were both absolutely wonderful. The flank steak was also really good, but I don't think there's a whole lot you can do with steak that makes it stand out. This one was prepared well.
Service was good and the ambiance, dark, but cozy. All for pretty decent value. Oh, and the happy hour drinks didn't disappoint either. We'll be back…
Pleasant atmosphere and nice decor. The chef was a bit heavy handed with ginger on the chicken dish and lime on the fish; both just felt overpowered with those particular flavors. The fish was also a little too dry though overall the dinner wasn't bad. Thai rice was by far my favorite dish – loved it.
The vibe and interior of the restaurant is completely my style–that casual and relaxed atmosphere with a simple, clean modern look. We came in for lunch on a Aaturday and were seated immediately.
Chicken with shiitake: A saucy stir fry with abundant shiitake mushrooms and chicken, just like the name offers. The flavor and seasoning was on point, slightly bordering salty but perfect with rice. It tasted clean and "pure", nothing artificial about it. Recommend.
Drunken Noodles: At first glance it looked bland, but again, the flavor and seasoning was on point and the spicy kick was perfect. Recommend.
The portions are good. You'll leave full and content. Attentive and friendly service. Very pleased with my experience here.
Via MealPass I selected their vegetarian lo mein. I was expecting your run of the mill typical lo mein, but dang was I wrong! It was noticeably fresher and tastier than most takeout places I've been to. The inside is pretty plain but setup nicely with plenty of tables to sit at. My lo mein came nicely packaged in a plastic container and all the utensils I needed. Better yet, it was ready upon arrival and I left within less than a couple of minutes. I also love shiitake mushrooms and they were so dang good in the mix. Thumbs up, I now have another solid chinese place to hit up when I'm in the Chelsea area!
A friend brought us here for dinner. I was quite happy he did. It is a small, narrow restaurant with a small bar at the front.
We started off with a few appetizers for the table. The appetizers are small, so I recommend one per person.
First up was the Chop Shop Slaw. It consists of napa cabbage, apple, radicchio and spicy garlic mayo. It was a nice twist on slaw. It had good flavor and a nice crisp texture. Next up was the Fried Chicken Lollipops. They are topped with rice flour, garlic chili sauce, lemongrass, lime leaf and brown sugar. These were also good. Not great, but worth trying.
Last, but certainly not least, were the Braised Pork Belly Buns. They include hoisin, crushed peanut and pickled greens. This was certainly the best appetizer. The flavors and textures were great. You get three of them.
For my meal I ordered the Thai Fried Rice. It comes with sausage and fried egg. The flavor was fantastic. I enjoyed every bite. I would strongly recommend giving it a try. The portion is a good size, especially if you tried some of the appetizers.
We are not in New York often, but we will certainly be looking to eat hear again.
